Hello, all! Question regarding SpyderX calibration. Does the sensor itself need to be square (i.e. facing directly at the front) to the screen, or off to the side? The JVC documentation suggests off to the side, but it's not clear. Also, when angling it slightly upwards to avoid its own shadow, how does one know how far to point upwards? Is it slight? Thanks in advance!

Officially no, the Spyder5 will not work with Autocal 12 which is required for firmware 3.50+.

But there are unofficial Autocal DLL hacks that will let you use the Spyder5.

I think it is possible to improve even more the native contrast of the projector and to reduce the gamma drift linked to the DI Auto thanks to an external filter.

I have done various tests on an N5 and an RS2000, I explain.

For the contrast: When we set the color temperature on MaxBright with the RGB gains at maximum we get the native contrast of DILA panels, but the color temperature is wrong. To reach 6500k we have to strongly reduce the green and a little the blue. If we place a pink filter in front of the lens it reduces the green optically, we do not need to lower the green in the settings. This allows us to keep the native contrast of the panels and to have a color temperature of 6500k. Moreover, the filter reduces the black ground, and the lost brightness is recovered thanks to the gain of the green which will be higher with the filter. (There is surely something like that internally in the RS3000 to have even more contrast)

For the DI Auto gamma drift : if the RGB gains in MaxBright mode are equal for example all at the maximum, there is no more drift. the test is easy to do.

Now it remains to find a filter that has red and a little blue (so pink) of the right shade, a little like a Hoya FLD filter but a little more pink. to reach the equal RGB gain.

I am currently using a Tiffen Sky 1A filter but it is too clear not pink enough. but it is already an improvement.
There is also the Tiffen CC20M

IMPORTANT WARNING: using the Autocal software changes internal tables in the projector. The first time you use it and save a calibration, it will create a .INIT file that contains the calibration tables as they were when the PJ left the factory. This .init file is saved in the folder you have selected in the software settings. There is no way to re-create this .INIT file if you lose it or delete it, yet restoring this .INIT file is the only way to revert the PJ to its factory state (doing a factory reset in the service menu only restores user settings, not calibration tables). So please make sure that you back up this .INIT and keep the back-up copy in a safe place.

I am having a minor/major panic attack... I cannot not remember (old man disease) where I put my original INIT file so I did a deep hard drive scan and found one file that is named "XXXXXXX_Init_2020-0923-1414.cbd" (X's are my serial number)... Is that my original INIT file?

Did you do your first calibration on September 23 2020? The date is also in the file name.

I am not quite sure. I think it was but that was the around that my laptop pretty much died and I had to get a new one. So I don't remember if I had done one before.

I thought that Manni had said that the INIT was only created once and at no other time so I figured that this was that file since it does have init in the file name.

Looking back over my build thread and my old pictures I found some from the first time I tried AutoCal v11, and they all show 09232019. Either my laptop was recording the wrong date or when I switched to v12 it created another INIT file.

Why panic ?   After such a long time everything has changed in your projector, so what good is it to reload an init file ?
Do a new autocal and forget about the init file !

Not really a panic but more of a scientific concern... I wanted to do some 3D Luts for the Lumagen and wanted to try an absolutely clean JVC to compare it to an AutoCal'd version. If I don't have the original INIT file then I cannot do a true comparison.

Probably a good reason to save it to a dedicated thumb drive. After losing all my wine cellar inventory information to a computer crash and a corrupt backup, I save it on 4 dedicated thumb drives now!

Tell me about it... I am usually pretty good at saving all important files in a cloud based 3-2-1.

BUT... using that logic I began to search my drives again and sure enough I found the very first INIT file.... XXXXXXXX_Init_2019-0923-1849.cbd in a folder that I had somehow buried deep into another totally unrelated folder. Either my old man brain is really getting bad or I started saving stuff nilly willy when I realized my laptop was dying quickly. Kinda weird that they were exactly one-year apart.

That's pretty amazing.  How are you attaching the Tiffen filter to the projector?

With an adapter ring that I made with 3D printer, it allows to put a 77mm filter on the JVC.

I continue my tests, but the perfect shade for this projector is the filter shade "Lee 248 Half minus green". But it exists only in gelatin. Otherwise a CC15M filter is the closest. But in glass I find only CC10M and CC20M. I will see with a manufacturer of glass if it is possible to make the same shade as the filter Lee 248 but in glass. would be ideal.
