Hi Everyone  8)

This is my first post here, and I hope this topic is still active.
I’ve been reading a lot on the forum and carefully followed all the recommended steps before starting the calibration. However, I’ve encountered some strange issues that I’d like to share with you, and I would really appreciate your help.

Setup Details
  • Projector: JVC DLA-NX9 (European model)
  • Calibration Software: JVC Autocal v12
  • Laptop: Lenovo ThinkPad P53 running Windows 11 Pro
  • Sensors Used: Spyder X and X-Rite i1Pro2 Revision E
  • Firmware: Latest version installed on the JVC
  • Lamp Hours: First bulb, approximately 800 hours
  • Stewart Screen studiotek 130G3

The Problem

I started with gamma calibration using the Spyder X, followed by color calibration with the i1Pro2. While the calibration reports appear to be good, I notice very strange black levels (gamma) when playing content. I would describe these issues as "artifacts," and they are visible in both SDR and HDR10 content.

What I’ve Tried So Far
  • Re-ran the calibration multiple times.
  • Changed the meter’s position, including different locations, angles, and heights.
  • Despite all adjustments, the measurements consistently looked good, but the issue persisted when playing content.

For reference, I’m using an Oppo 203 UHD player to play original discs. In the end, I restored the
Init back-up file, and everything looked fine again. However, after a few days, I repeated the calibration and ran into the same black-level problem.

Does anyone have any idea what might be going wrong here? I’m puzzled by the fact that the reports look fine, but real content still shows these black-level artifacts.

Thanks in advance for your time and suggestions!

The first picture below was taken after restoring the original Init backup file. The second picture shows the issue that occurs after using Autocal.

I would post this on the AVSForum as there is a thread dedicated to this series. This thread has been dead for awhile.

If you want to try again, I would suggest not using the spider for gamma but rather use your other meter with the diffusion cap on pointed directly at the projector perhaps 1 m in front of the lens. This should provide enough light for accurate gamma readings, and since Gamma is not affected by the screen, it should translate just fine.

Hi, thanks for your reply, and happy new year to you all!

In your opinion, could the issue be a bad sample of the Spyder? It seems that the i1Pro2 is not good at reading gamma. Do you have a different opinion on this?

Could be bad or simply not enough light off the screen. The i1Pro may not be perfect but it should be much better than what you are seeing.

Thanks Nathan! Will give it a try soon.

Have a good weekend! 8)

hi everyone,

I have a few questions for you. I have read most posts and videos about autocal but there a few things i could not find.
I have a NX9 that i have calibrated for the 1st time with a Spyder X Pro this week-end. I feel the contrast is very good, but i find the image too be too dark, even the subtitles that are now grayish. Maybe after 5 years of getting used to it without calibration, who knows.

I have done one SDR calibration with gamme 2.4 on user 1, then followed by HDR10 on user 4.
Auto aperture was disabled and full opened. Frame Adapt HDR was turned off for the time of the calibration. Same as Theater Optimizer.

1) About "Frame Adapt HDR". When we switch it back, how does it know whether it should select User 4 and not standard HDR10 profile?

2) Does the gamma level used in SDR calibration, has any influence on HDR result? (as we don't see gamma settings in the projector menu when in HDR)

3) I've seen posts about recommending using 2.2 for the SDR calibration, whereas i had selected 2.4. Which one should i use?

4) What about brightness, contrast, should they always be calibrated manually after Autocal calibration?

5) Is there a way to have access to the results of a calibration (graphs and curves)? Seems to not be the case, would have liked to share one. My HDR one was no longer a straight line but a "S".

In the meantime, i am restoring the factory calibration (INIT), to validate my impressions.

thank you

Hi everyone.
I have a big problem. As indicated i was going to do in my prior post, I have imported (restored) the INIT config to my NX9. Now i don't get any picture on the projector, all black (no signal screen is configured to be blue). It kind of receive a signal but i can't see anything. I must admit that i have done a mistake during importing and click the hide button on the remote as instructions say to never do that. I got an error message to indicate that communication with the projector got lost. So i restart the process and then the result is no image! Are we supposed to get a confirmation message when the import is done? It goes to 100% then nothing else happens).

As the manual says, I have stopped the projector for 5 minutes, restarted the PC and did it again. Same result.

I am extremely nervous now. I hope this will not require me to service the projector. Anyone could help?

That doesn't sound good at all. I hope you didn't brick it. The remote shouldn't be touched at all when using autocal. ;D

You're going to have to contact JVC support. This is well beyond my expertise level.

Update: I had to send my pj for repair and just got it back. They had to replace the CPU Board. Could not find the cause, we’ll never know. I am done with Autocal.
