After reading here, apparently that was a bad idea on the color side.

Seeing as I’m new to this, my first mission is ‘do no harm.’ In that spirit, I’m loading my .init file as I type. 
Did you actually notice the picture getting worse to cause you to revert?

That’s a very good question. I did not check again after reverting before redoing gamma only. I did get three very nice gamma curves after correction (2 completely  straight lines for non hdr) and the picture looks extremely similar for 3d and hdr and maybe just a touch less red on natural, but again, very similar. Tbh, I’m not sure the spyderX drastically altered the factory color settings but I have no empirical way to prove it. 
Now I’m playing with the dynamic iris on auto 2 (0 base setting) and also with 16-255 (s white- did not calibrate on s white) which collectively is making my darks a lot darker while still having bright scenes sufficiently bright. I’m kinda liking the look of this...but tinkering away with different source material.
Other settings are lamp hi, bt2020 wide, frame adapt frame by frame, and theater optimizer on hi (120” screen + .8 gain)

Tbh, I’m not sure the spyderX drastically altered the factory color settings but I have no empirical way to prove it.
If you compare the logs before and after colour calibration, you can see how much Autocal altered the colours.

I like the changes Autocal made, using a SpyderX for gamma and i1Pro2 for color.

Where to from here? If I wanted to keep tinkering a bit - what pieces of hardware or software is the natural next step?

If you get the EFI or x-rite used, is software readily available for calibrating computer monitors, especially recent Mac OS?  Extra cost?  I’d perhaps only justify getting one if it could pull double duty.  The spyder 5 I got not long ago is already useless given it’s neither supported by JVC or Datacolor on recent macOS.

There's a primer over on another forum (and possibly this one) on the model differences. From what I understand (and purchased myself) you want Revision E (or D, but E is what I chose). 

I got an X-rite branded model as opposed to the ES-2000 as I figured I might want to use the X-rite software at some point.

Only the X-rite can use the X-rite software from what I understand.

1- I’ll definitely pull up my logs in the new year and see what the spyderX did for color- great suggestion. For now, I’m really liking it with just gamma calibration - especially on natural. I’ll also just say- prior to redoing this, I completely blacked out my room with flocking paper and flocked curtains I made, and that by far made more of a difference than any calibration. This feels more like the cherry on top.
2- I’ll jump in and say I’m also curious about the ‘pitfalls’ of getting an i1pro2 on ebay. I know getting the calibration pad is a must but also curious about software. I’ll read the suggested links above.

Each i1Pro meter has an embedded code.  The x-rite software (i1Profiler) is free to download, and will show you which calibration modes the connected meter is licensed to run; e.g., display only, display+print etc.

I once again read contradictory statements about the dynamic video range settings in all the elements of the autocal chain and also with a real calibration chain wether HCFR or other like ZRO.
So sorry to insist but can someone definitively give me the video range settings as below :

1- Autocal chain where the PC's graphic card is not part of the chain as orders are sent to the projector via a LAN connection and sensor connected to a PC's USB input :
  ==>  PC setting = ?
  ==>  Projector setting = ?
I haven't seen any such setting in the Autocal application.

2- HCFR (or other) calibration chain :
  ==>  PC graphic card setting = ?
  ==>  Projector via PC's HDMI output,  setting = ?
  ==>  HCFR setting = ?

3- Same as 2- but with a RPI PGen pattern generator in between the PC's hdmi output and the projector

1 - There is no dynamic range with autocal because the pc sends the patterns through the LAN

2 - You just have to use the same range, for example 0-255. if you want to avoid a conversion, you have to set the video player or HCFR to 16-235 and the graphics card to 0-255 and the projector to 16-235. with this solution the video player and hcfr will be correct, on the other hand the windows desktop or a video game will be wrong.

3 - The RPI PGenerator will send a full RGB signal (0-255). So same thing HCFR in 16-235 and the RPI PGen is in 0-255 and the JVC on 16-235

OK, will try this next time, still I do not really understand why the graphic card has to be 0-255 ? 
Why not 16-235 like the rest of the chain, isn't that forcing a double conversion, once 16-235 to 0-255 from HCFR to the graphic card and then again 0-255 to 16-235  from the graphic card to the projector ?

I understand that when using a player or mediacenter it  resumes to 16-235 on both ends.
