I once had to get up and go out to the lobby area and ask someone to tell the projectionist to turn off the damn lights.  They leave the overheads on low during the previews but, 5 minutes into the feature lights were still on.  >:(  Not because of that incident but,  I have not Been to a movie theater since 2005.   :o  Have they changed much?  Probably all digital projection by now.  :)

Yes, it's a rarity to see 35mm film projectors used these days. It's really hit or miss and I would say that it depends more on the cineplex you go to. If it's well managed, the experience can be great. I mean, just don't expect the same image and sound quality that you can achieve at home. The digital IMAX in my area is one of the smallest IMAX theaters in the world according to something I read but still have a full blown IMAX sound system. The bass in that theater is something to behold. The image quality is just okay. I'd say the best commercial experience I've had in recent times was at the BFI IMAX in London back in 2015. I saw Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation just a few days after they had the red carpet premier there. Management came out and did a little announcement about how Tom Cruise was just there for it and showed some photos of the event before the movie started.

In general, that's what I do as well.  What I save in going to the theater will generally pay for most of the Blu-ray purchase.

I did find out, though, that the only Dolby Cinema in North Carolina is only a half hour from me.  I've gone there a couple of times (Black Panther was one), just out of curiosity.

The picture quality was pretty good, and they had proper light control to facilitate black levels.  To be honest, though, I still think my lowly RS400 provided better sharpness, and as good or better visual impact overall.

The audio was also decent, but I still prefer my home theater.

It would definitely look better on my RS4500 then. I have people tell me that all the time. Some have given up going to the movies so they can just watch at my house. And they know damn well that I'll buy the latest best movies on 4K - Deadpool 2, etc. etc.  !!

You actually still go to a commercial movie theater - how quaint ! I'll wait for the 4K Blu-ray - it's already in my Amazon wish list.

Did it to get out of the house. First day, after dropping Adam (our youngest) off for college.

"our youngest"? You mean the caboose?  ;)

I was the caboose after daddy sired me, mamma had me, daddy had a vasectomy and became a sterile perile (his words!)!!!!!!!  ;) :D :)  ::)

I still go to the theater in Seattle, but it is pretty much limited to the Cinerama (see cinerama.com) and their film festivals.  They still have 70mm projectors and care about quality.

They also have a fancy 6P laser projector which was great for 3D but they don't seem to be doing much 3D anymore.  It throws a nice image but the contrast ratio isn't as good as what you get in the home.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but why don't the laser projectors use a dynamic iris?  I understand that dynamic laser is nice, but seems like that could be combined with DI for increased contrast ratio in some situations.

Looks like the new VW870 stole my brilliant idea :)

Maybe. It all looks good on paper.  I'll be interested to see how it actually works.

It's an interesting prospect, but utilizing both to boost contrast still has the same limitations as just using one. You're still limited to how much contrast you can multiply before you get issues with gamma, color shifts and clipped whites. It's often been incorrectly mentioned that a laser is faster than a physical iris and while that may be true of the one that Sony typically uses, that's not an absolute truth as there are physical irises out there than close fully and then open fully within a single from one another (and also go to any one of hundreds of positions in between). You can also make a physical iris fully close for a true fade to black. Mitsubishi did this with their HC7900d and HC8000d. So I don't see any inherent benefits of a laser being used for contrast enhancement compared to a physical iris. JVC uses a clever approach that may work similarly to what Sony may be doing with this new dual contrast enhancing system. The higher end JVCs use an extra iris mechanism at the light source too, which means less light enters the light engine which means you can control scatter more and how much light leaves the lens easier, thus increasing contrast over just a lens iris. This may be what Sony intends on doing to boost contrast a bit more. We'll see.

A physical iris can wear out. Or become noisy over time - which may indicate it is wearing out. Software based laser dimming doesn't have that problem.

That's a pretty rare thing. The faulty ones usually show themselves fairly early on.  I haven't heard of anyone complaining about an iris getting progressively louder over time. Either way i don't see anything inherently better from a picture quality standpoint that can't also be done with physical irises. A lens iris, creating an aperture, can do things laser dimming can't do. So maybe the key is to have both and maybe thats what Sony is trying to do.

I have with two Lumis's over the years. So a manual iris and laser dimming seems to me to be a good combination.

I don’t have the 4500 but I have an rs600 with the 820

Firstly the thing is amazing. The tone mapping is OUTSTANDING. I watched fantastic beasts last night and never was able to see the corduroy on credence jacket when he was talking to the other guy (Colin something or other) in the alley

Anyhow...

I am using sdr2020 with the hdr enhance to on. And +6 on the slider

Everything else at zero. Just an amazing picture.

Arrow, Craig or Mike.  Have any of you received confirmation form JVC that the RS4500 will be receiving the tone mapping feature via firmware update?
