In general, that's what I do as well. What I save in going to the theater will generally pay for most of the Blu-ray purchase.I did find out, though, that the only Dolby Cinema in North Carolina is only a half hour from me. I've gone there a couple of times (Black Panther was one), just out of curiosity.The picture quality was pretty good, and they had proper light control to facilitate black levels. To be honest, though, I still think my lowly RS400 provided better sharpness, and as good or better visual impact overall.The audio was also decent, but I still prefer my home theater.
You actually still go to a commercial movie theater - how quaint ! I'll wait for the 4K Blu-ray - it's already in my Amazon wish list.

Forgive me if this has already been discussed, but why don't the laser projectors use a dynamic iris? I understand that dynamic laser is nice, but seems like that could be combined with DI for increased contrast ratio in some situations.

It's an interesting prospect, but utilizing both to boost contrast still has the same limitations as just using one. You're still limited to how much contrast you can multiply before you get issues with gamma, color shifts and clipped whites. It's often been incorrectly mentioned that a laser is faster than a physical iris and while that may be true of the one that Sony typically uses, that's not an absolute truth as there are physical irises out there than close fully and then open fully within a single from one another (and also go to any one of hundreds of positions in between). You can also make a physical iris fully close for a true fade to black. Mitsubishi did this with their HC7900d and HC8000d. So I don't see any inherent benefits of a laser being used for contrast enhancement compared to a physical iris. JVC uses a clever approach that may work similarly to what Sony may be doing with this new dual contrast enhancing system. The higher end JVCs use an extra iris mechanism at the light source too, which means less light enters the light engine which means you can control scatter more and how much light leaves the lens easier, thus increasing contrast over just a lens iris. This may be what Sony intends on doing to boost contrast a bit more. We'll see.
That's a pretty rare thing. The faulty ones usually show themselves fairly early on. I haven't heard of anyone complaining about an iris getting progressively louder over time. Either way i don't see anything inherently better from a picture quality standpoint that can't also be done with physical irises. A lens iris, creating an aperture, can do things laser dimming can't do. So maybe the key is to have both and maybe thats what Sony is trying to do.
