Not happy at all with JVC 3000
« on: April 25, 2019, 12:17:02 PM »
I have a new JVC 3000 projector and a new Stewarts 100 screen.  This replaces my former JVC DLA-RS66U

Boy, am I unhappy with this. The projector is not nearly as bright as the old JVC and you cannot convince me that it is 2,200 lumens. I have tried to lighten the picture but I then I lose vibrancy and brilliance in the colors.

On the old JVC I was very content with the “lower” lamp setting. Here I am using high and it is not as good.  We cannot watch a 3D movie on the 3000 because it is so dark you can’t see anything.

And the contrast is poor. Especially a dark or black object on a black background.  This was a highlight of JVC, here it is sad.  I liked the old  projector better!

I am using the Oppo 205 to get a 4k image and the 3D.  I also use my verizon to get a regular 1080P picture.

I have played with the settings, is there any suggestions?  I must be doing something wrong.  When I have changed, for example to THX, The picture color changes poorly.

Something doesn't sound right. The RS3000 should clearly be brighter than the RS66. What picture mode are you using? For anything non-HDR or 3D place the projector in one of the custom User picture modes. From there select D6500 for the white balance and REC709 as the color profile. Choose a gamma that you like best.  Custom gamma with a 2.2 correction value set should look good out of the box.

I'd also recommend disabling CMD and Motion Enhance. Make sure the manual iris is fully open and enable one of the auto iris modes if you'd like. These settings should give a ton of light output.

Thanks so much.  What settings should I use for 3D?

I called the JVC rep and he said he would get back to me.

I haven't played with 3D much with these new models so I'll save that response for someone else.

Something is definitely wrong, if the 3000 is not a lot brighter than your old RS66. Did you set it up or someone else?

I think it's also obvious that High lamp mode should be used if you want to gain more light output. If you set the projector up like I've said and it's still not clearly brighter than your RS66, then something is definitely wrong with the RS3000 they sent you. Do you have access to a lux meter? If you can take a brightness measurement at the screen that would be helpful in figuring out if your unit is appropriately bright or not.

Barry, something doesn't sound right at all. Use the settings that Dylan suggested. I forgot, how big is your screen, 110"?

What is your new screen size/gain/throw distance?

You mention that your new screen is a Stewart 100, so I assume nominal gain, but we still need size and throw distance. What was the old screen size/gain and throw distance?

If set to THX (to make things simple, though it might make it a bit dimmer) with high lamp and iris fully open, it should be brighter than the old PJ with the same screen gain/size and throw distance.

If it's significantly dimmer, it could be a dud bulb (that can happen) or a defective unit.

But until you confirm screen size / gain and throw distance for both old and new screen/PJ, it's hard to know as you changed more than just the PJ.

I think maybe a better questions is, what screen did you have before? If you've switched from a higher gain screen to the Stewart 100 (a unity gain screen) that right there could account for the appearance of a dimmer image.

Better question than what? That’s exactly what I asked.
