I have my Roku running through the Oppo 203. Watched the series "Altered Carbon". The HDR with the Oppo doing the tone mapping and it was very good, especially for streamed content.

I did the same by connecting my Samsung K8500 UHD disc player to the Oppo HDMI input.    Even with custom HDR curves much of Netflix HDR content was still extremely dark.   With the Oppo doing the tone mapping I am able to adjust the picture to my liking.  All of the neon lighting in Altered Carbon looked fantastic.

Should not be using custom curve in projector. Should be using standard profile, BT2020 and 2.4 gamma.

Of course.

What I was trying to say is that I was never happy with Netflix HDR content no matter what custom curve I loaded in my JVC RS500.   The new Oppo tone mapping (yes with BT.2020 and gamma 2.4) made a huge difference.

Overall the Off BT.2020 image looks flat, and less vibrant. (which is contrary to what some have posted)
I noticed it in person with my own eyes, the camera captured the same differences I saw as well,
...otherwise I would not have posted them.

this above quote from AVS from Piomaniac.....was odd to me...since no one ever mentioned this with the new beta ware.

then last night w my son we popped in Dispicable me 3 in 4k UHD bluray.  The colors were flat and not vibrant at all...the whites looked fuzzy...i was in shock.  I opened the oppo app to adjust the luninance....and switching it literally did nothing!

I then remembered when the disc loaded I hit "YES" when asked to pickup where we last left off.....so I stopped the disc...and started a new.  and BAM all the glorious color pop was there and the picture was STUNNING

Im curious if Pio....did the same and was underwhelmed by the picture...

curious little glitch that was encountered

btw watched Deadpool after the little went to bed...WOW that is top 3 for PQ for me..and I NEVER thought so with even the custom curves....was always dark and not great highlights...NO MORE :)

Alright, I have an Oppo 203 coming. I can do some comparison tests against the UB900 with custom gamma curves.
When the new Panasonic UB820 comes out, I may replace the UB900 with that ( depending on reviews ) and compare that with the Oppo tone mapping.

I have missed having two Blu-ray players, which can be handy ( Blu-ray vs 4K BR comparisons ). And I need a new toy to play with. Besides, it's way cheaper than getting a Radiance Pro to play with !  :-[

Yeah, way cheap than a R-Pro!  I remember checking http://www.curtpalme.com and couldn't believe the price.   I could have bought another RS-500.  It's really awesome how Oppo continually improves and offers more features.  They are the OPPO-site of JVC   ;)  I've never had a piece of  A/V gear where it was continuously improved.   This is my first Oppo product and I don't think it will be my last.   8)

Don't you have a Samsung k8500 UHD player as well or did you sell it?  So the Oppo makes 3 UHD players if I remember correctly.    ??? 8)

Oh no - I sold that Samsung piece of junk quite a while ago. I currently only have the UB900.

For those that have the Oppo BD players, I highly recommend downloading the new beta firmware and use the Oppo for HDR tone mapping. It is quick, easy and painless. :)
https://www.oppodigital.com/blu-ray-udp-203/UDP203-firmware-56-0124B.aspx

Oppo settings for HDR
HDR off BT2020
Luminance slider to 250 or higher.
Select 1 through 4 depending on what you want to emphasize.

JVC RS5xx and RS6xx settings for HDR
Natural or standard
BT2020 color space
Custom 2.4 gamma

Set light output and iris to settings that work for your screen.

Now play with the luminance slider and 1-4 settings, to find what works for your screen and you are done. :)

Added
I have my HDR settings under user 1 and SDR settings under user 3. I have user 1 and user 3 buttons available for all of my activities, so simple one button press to go back and forth.
