Oppo UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Define " inexpensive " ? See the HDMI cable thread - although I'm using a 16' Monster Black Platinum cable myself.

I ended up going to BB last night and picked up a 12' HDMI cable for $64 out the door. I hooked it up and we watched the Magnificent 7 in 4K... I have to say the picture was great! I am sure i still need to do some calibrating as the video was HDR, but it seemed a little dark during the dark scenes (Losing detail).

After we watched Magnificent 7... I put on the new Jason Bourne movie, and it paused about 1/4 into the movie. I stopped the movie and started again and it froze again at the same spot. Will having a wrong setting cause this, or is the cable i got still not good enough?

Oppo has replicated some of the playback issues.   They are working on improving disc reading.    Until then, try cleaning the disc.

If you have some way to check the input signal status in the Vizio, it should report 4K24 4:2:2 12 bit now when you play a UHD Blu Ray.    You don't have to force 4K60 like you did with the Samsung player.   UHD Blu Ray is 24Hz and should be displayed that way.

In the Oppo, press the remote's Info button for several seconds to get the long read out.   Scroll down to see the output format and resolution.

Vizio is receiving exactly what the OPPO is sending.  For the concert DVD I'm watching right now, that's 30Hz at 4K (3840x2169) upscaled from 720x480.  My Output Res is set to Custom with UHD 24Hz, Color Space 4:4:4, Color Depth at 12 bit (need it or not).  So no issues with my setup. 

For all it's limitations, the Vizio is capable of great PQ.  I'm using the 4K@60Hz input because that is the only way to get 4K resolution.  That means it is capable of handling up to 60Hz, not that it MUST have 60Hz.  I use a Custom 4K Picture mode that is near (but slightly adjusted for UHD) the normal  "Calibrated" mode.  With this and the OPPO settings, I can watch Directv, DVDs, Blurays and UHD disks without further adjustments and with excellent PQ.  Since this tv has a short life expectancy in my HT, I've decided not to do excess tweaking for UHD that would also require using a separate Input on the Vizio for Directv or BR.  That would not be very family friendly even if I was willing to keep constantly adjusting things.  When I get a new HDR capable TV, I'll "fix" things.

Meanwhile, for the first time in six months I've reached a relative status quo.  Not that I may not "play" with any of my components, but my family settings are set, utilize pretty close to the best that the 203 and TV have to offer, and are better than anything we've had previously. 

I guess you could say, I'm fat and happy.     And loving it.

And speaking of ellisr63, while I don't suspect you cables as the cause of the JB pause, I would suggest getting that 15' Certified Premium cable from Monoprice that I'm using.  For $10, it's worth testing and for having as a backup (or for later additions).

I thought the issue using the Samsung was that you had to disable 24fps and send 4K60 4:2:0 to the Vizio since it wouldn't accept 4:4:4.    I would have thought setting Color Space to 4:2:2 in the Oppo would be a better option for the Vizio. 

Of course the Oppo might still be sending 4:2:2 if handshaking between the Oppo and the Vizio resulted in the Oppo determining that the Vizio won't accept 4:4:4.   The Oppo is a lot smarter about this than the Samsung.

FYI, another minor glitch (maybe like your "pause"?).  This was with a dvd -- Neil Young Heart of Gold.  Played through the ad intro stuff, let me setup DTS 5.1, started and then hung with the Paramount mountain just forming.  Dead.  Remote seemed unresponsive.  Though remote Power didn't work, but by the time I got up to try the box Power, the 203 did power down.  Restarted and everything has been fine since.  Watching/listening now.

Honestly, I don't remember about the Samsung.  I played with it only minimally to get a picture before I took it out to return.  But I do "think" I output RGB Video 4:4:4 to try to match the input of the Vizio.  With the Samsung there were few config options compared to OPPO.  It seemed pretty much hit and miss as to whether you could find matching capabilities. 

I'll take a look again at my OPPO/Vizio info later with UHD and update.  Basically, the best thing is that the OPPO now seems on cruise control despite my having Custom settings.  Whatever I put in, viewing is fine.  Since working to get it set, I haven't check the Info at both ends for every disc I've put in.  (That would be a good thing in my view.    )

I have noticed that with the 203 the remote is not very responsive and is susceptible to locking up the Oppo if you are noy patient enough. I started to use the Oppo Media app on my Android tablet and found that with the App it sees my Plex, HDTV tuners, and NAS. I tried to select Music from the menu on the 203, but it appears that is only for using a Music CD, as it doesn't show my NAS, or other Media locations.

Photos and Movies does the same.

Network finds my laptop and everything else connected through my router.  Lots of duplicate access there.

You should check to see if your TV supports BT.2020 wide color gamut.    If not then you might want to set HDR to Off instead of Strip Metadata.

Yes, we will be making enhancements to the player's error correction through firmware releases, and it will likely be several releases before we can tamp down on most of the disc reading errors that our customers are reporting.

I checked my settings on my Samsung TV, and HDR was set. I played Jason Bourne and it looked great.

Why would the Oppo tell me this...does this mean the old cable didn't see it as HDR or is it the new cable that is causing this error?

I get that error message with various 4K Blu Rays and my Panasonic UB900, but I'm using SDR BT.2020. Maybe 4K Blu Rays just like sending that message !
