Oppo UDP-203 Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

What HDMI cable are you using... I ask this because I have seen elsewhere that the cable can make a difference in working with the Oppo.

I'm using Blue Jeans 4K cables which, from what I've read, have passed all tests pertaining to 4K signals.  Believe me, I've purchased enough different 4K cables in the last few months to open a cable shop!

Note:  ...from the projector discussion re: JVC's...it appears that the JVC's are having handshake problems going from, let's say, DVD and blu-ray to 4K...there are approx. 15 second delays in the JVC's getting the message.

May be, one of these days, JVC and/or OPPO will find a solution to these problems.

In the Oppo you should be able to force all output to be 24Hz.  And force all output at 4K.   That should help with the JVC projector sync times by avoiding unneeded resolution/frame rate changes.

I intend to try that when i get my Oppo since I have no real 60Hz content to play.   The Oppo just like the Samsung player will try to send the menu screen at 4K60.

The JVC handshake is will known by everyone with a 2016 JVC projector.  I don't think there is anything to be done about it but live with it.   As soon as I hear audio, I hit the pause button and wait for the video sync to complete.  When I see a picture I resume playback.

Edit:  There was a recent post in the other forum that Oppo replied to a member that they would change the default resolution for the menu screen from 60Hz to 24Hz or 30Hz.   I hope it is 24Hz or configurable.

Samsung fixed the menu issue via firmware, and Oppo no doubt will too. Seems to be part of the 4K Blu Ray player manufacturer's learning curve !

Oppo just released new beta firmware that may help.

You could also try setting Custom Resolution to "UHD 24Hz"

I emailed OPPO and received a call that the disc would be mailed to me today.

Never mind the suggestion to set Custom Resolution to "UHD 24Hz".   A prominent beta tester on the other forum's Oppo thread reported that this setting has its own set of issues.   Including outputting 1080P/60 at 25 or 30 Hz.

FYI, I like HDR Strip a lot better with 1229B, as long as you increase brightness +8 as recommended.

I see the AV Science store has today starting filling their orders for the Oppo UDP203 players.  It will be interesting to see what version of the firmware comes with these or if there is a new official firmware release offered by Oppo within the next week to go along with the player's wider release thru their retail distribution channel.

I don't know what the firmware is these ship with, but I'm sure there will be regular updates to get everything dialed in over the next few weeks.

Good news. After having owned a projector that can play 4K BD's for two years, I have a 4K player headed to me. Bad news. Sold my JVC RS600, so do not own a projector with 4K ability. Hopefully only one month to go.

If the current beta firmware version, 1229b, is made official release by the time we get our units, the unit will automatically check for the new firmware to install.

If 1229b is still beta, then we will need to download the the beta firmware and install it.  There are so many fixes in 1229b that it is a must to install.   I doubt there will be new beta firmware so soon after 1229b but you never know.

These units should come with current official firmware version 1209 unlike the early shipments.  If they don't and have have the original firmware I would just skip the update to 1209 and install the 1229b firmware instead.

just installed the beta...and tried strip meta....and WOW the picture is out of this world...using craig peers guide for 2020 SDR....i didnt find a need to raise contrast or brightness as oppo suggests

deadpool is still a bit on the dark side....but Angry birds, pacific rim and the martian are all incredible (only ones ive tried so far)

There is a current bug in HDR Strip and HDR Off that causes banding, but Kris Deering mentioned the gamma being wrong still, and I know improper gamma adjustment in a cal can cause banding. Whatever is going on in HDR to SDR conversion right now still needs some tweaking. Overall, I think it looks pretty good.
