Talking about the replacement for the RS640. Laser would be very nice.

The lens of the current 6xx series could be used for a 4k laser machine.  It is better than the current Sony projector lenses isn't  it?

Hearing this makes me mad. Then I remember I didn’t even pay remotely close to full retail for the 600 (cause if i has to i would still have the rs400. Which even that i had to buy second hand) So even if these rumors are true it ain’t happening for me lmao.

I got some further strong rumors via the Local JVC folks that the 9 series will in fact go laser its next 4K iteration. I'm sure there will be big celebrations around the place if that happens!

Hard to imagine they could price it at current RS640 MSRP - unless they plan on raising it.

One wild guess for next year's replacements: RS640 native 4K + laser, RS540 native 4K + lamp, RS440 remains largely the same as it destroys its current competition at ~$3999 unless they want to bump up the price and make it native to compete against the Sony 285ES, but that would be tough for them to pull off I imagine with their first go around with the regular RS line.

Why, I paid more for my 640 than you paid for your 600 and I bought mine a lot later. Besides, we do not know if any of this will actually happen. I know I sure would not want my HT room to be out of commision for 11 months waiting for it.

I see no way, there will be a laser, native 4K RS640 replacement. I could see native 4K or I could see laser, but not both. Personally, I would rather see laser with E-shift, than lamp based with native 4K. Marketing wise, the buzz word of native 4K may make more sense, but for actual use, laser to me would be more valuable.

It is no RS4500 lens, but I think it would be as good or better than the other 4K lens in the market right now.

I could actually see say an ‘RS660’ with laser light source, positioned squarely against the Sony 760 at something like the European $15K-ish sort of price point, not the US MSRP or it would start to probably impinge too much on the 4500’s market. Would be a pretty compelling offer at on paper at least..

The wife and I have been enjoying watching the Winter Olympics on the RS4500 this week. Seems like NBC and AT & T U Verse have put more bandwidth than usual into this. So it looks mighty nice, even in 1080i !

Finally had some time to sit down and experiment with the Oppo. I used " Pacific Rim " on 4K Blu-ray. The Oppo looks very good. There are a lot of variables to try, but mode 3 and 400 seemed about right for my screen ( I have just under 125 nits ). When it's all said and done, I still prefer the custom curves installed by Chad B. I couldn't get the Oppo tone mapping to look better - it can look different, but i didn't have anything to complain about since Chad calibrated my RS4500 and installed the 3 custom curves. that said, the Oppo tone mapping is a great tool for people that don't have custom curves.

One weird thing - the Oppo on " source direct " with a Blu-ray was putting out 1919 x 1080, which I thought was odd.

Sharpness looked the same to me. I do like having two 4K Blu-ray players at my disposal !

Chad has calibration equipment you and I can't afford. The Oppo tone mapping is the next best thing if you don't have access to Chad. Especially since you need to buy a 4K Blu-ray player anyway !

I sold my UB900 and I don't think I can go back to a hardware player again. I only begrudgingly used the UB900 because there wasn't a way to playback UHD BDs on the PC until the last 6 months or so. But this new tone mapping feature on the Oppo sounds intriguing. I'm going to see if madshi has anything similar to this in the pipeline for madVR. If not, I might have to pick up an Oppo at some point.

Theoretically it already is.  Seems it has some room for improvement, there's a thread on the other forum where Javs and Manni are trying to help improve it.

Does anyone have any frame of reference to base an opinion on the Lumagen Pro vs Custom curves and the RS4500? 

I am bouncing back and forth on the Lumagen Pro and it would be nice to have some real time feedback from anyone that has it.
