I am always late to the party. I finally stepped up to a JVC RS540 from an Epson Pro Cinema 4050. Even though it was a refurbished, I felt it would provide me with a taste of what everyone has been talking about.

I have about 60 hours on the unit and am seeing a somewhat unsteady light output. When I watch a movie it seems to get a bit darker and then will lighten back up again. This is basically with 1080 content. I will look at 4k material tonite and see if it does the same. All my settings are the same as when it was delivered. Does anyone have any idea about this?

Thanks
Curt

Not quite. JVC decided to produce a few more RS540's, so not discontinued yet. :)

Are you seeing this on everything you are watching or just some things? If not on everything, then doubtful it is the projector. If seeing it on everything, try turning off the dynamic iris.

Thanks Mike. Just played some 4k and did not see it but then again I didn't watch for all but 10 minutes. Seems to come into play after about 30 minutes, so will report back later after I watch a movie.

Next time you see it, switch off the dynamic iris.

I turned off the dynamic iris and that seems to have cleared the problem. Thank You.
I have a lot to learn yet. :)

So I was lucky enough to score the last open box RS440 from Mike last week and am really loving the picture quality of the unit. But I'm not too excited about how loud high-altitude mode is. I'm at 5,000 ft (1600m), and I ran my previous X500 in high-altitude mode, and it didn't bother me too much, but the HA mode on the RS440 seems a bit louder. My wife was like "whoa that's loud!"

So I'm wondering if I can get away with running without HA mode? I have a separately cooled room, with a mini-split unit 7 feet away practically blowing on the projector, so the temp in the room always right around 73 degrees.  Without HA mode the unit is so quiet, it's lovely.

Am I risking anything by not running in HA mode? Thanks for the help!

Try not running HA mode, and monitor how hot the projector gets. If you keep your room cool, and have good ventilation in the room, it might be just fine.

Thanks for the support and fast reply!

Any suggestions on how exactly to monitor? What should I be looking out for? Just hot to touch, or a specific temperature?

Do you have a thermometer you could put on the projector? if so, you could compare after watching a movie with HA on and then off. If not, you will need to feel the projector case and judge for yourself.

So I did this! I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer, and I put the outdoor sensor on top of the projector to monitor. Two nights ago I had the unit on for about three hours, the temp in the room (on top of the projector, near the ceiling) started at 76°, and then it stabilized to 86°. Last night I did the same thing, same starting temperature, but with High Altitude mode on, and the thermometer stabilized to 82°. So HA is definitely doing its job, cooling more actively.

What do you think of these numbers? I attached a pic of the setup. The clearances on top and and in the back are based on the specs in the JVC manual.

I don't think 86 degrees is too high, but I'm sure Mike or Craig can ask JVC directly to see what they say.

I recently picked up a Panasonic UB420 and I'm confused about the output settings and what would be best for the rs440. Specifically the Deep Color output. I've tried all three settings, off, auto 10-bit and auto 12-bit and it seems to change the output in ways that I haven't seen before. Like for standard blu-ray I'm outputting 4:4:4 at 12 bit when deep color is at 12-bit. I didn't know anything over 8-bit was a thing for standard blu-ray!

Any help here what the most appropriate settings? I'm moving from an Oppo 203 where I had it set to 4:2:2.  I'd like to take advantage of the Panasonic's supposedly great chroma processing and have left that setting at Ycbcr auto. But I don't know what this "deep color" thing is. It seems to be a reference to the old deep color spec from early blu-ray days that never took off.

Last night while watching some UHD discs the JVC was reporting colorimetry of xvYCC, which seems related to deep color. What's going on here?

Thanks!
Mark
