Re-visited
Edge of tomorrow LDR in 3d
man I forgot how great the bass and sound is in this...and love the story
what have you last watched?
-
I recently purchased a Denon 4300 from JD here at AV Science...added the four DIY Atmos ceiling speakers and decided to watch Everest 3D. It was like watching a new movie and I have watched Everest at least 4 times since release. IMHO, immersive audio is the real deal. Now I'm looking to upgrade my PJ to a JVC 400 to improve my 2D / 3D experience and accept UHD discs that have immersive audio tracks.
Edge of Tomorrow 3D would be on my list after the PJ change...great movie!
-
oh yeah everest is a good one!...and the best part of atmos setup is it improves all movies with the upmixer :)
definitely check out goosebumps and xmen apocolypse...awesome atmos in both
-
The last BR I watched was Star Trek- Beyond.
-
watched Penguins with my son last night...pretty bad movie..but nice visuals and sound
-
Watched John Carter again last night.
-
Watched the extended cut of The New World on the new Criterion disk. I had never seen this movie before and I was blown away. The cinematography was absolutely gorgeous and I really enjoyed the slower pacing of the film. I give it a 9.75/10
-
Just watched Spartacus on HD DVD, and before that Apocalypto on Bly Ray.

Those are 2 great classic movies, and I must say I have never had the opportunity to see them look as great as your setup does!
-
I watched " The Talented Mr. Ripley " last Thursday with friends that had never seen it ( I've only seen it once ) - great film. Not sure if I'll have time to watch anything before Wed., but I'm watching " Anthropoid " Wed., followed by " Sicario " on 4K UHD Thursday, and then " End Of Watch " on Blu Ray on Friday. Sat and Sunday movies are TDB.
-
Picking up
Finding dory
And Star Wars 3D today. So those will be the next
-
Just watched The Revenant on Blu ray, now going to do the UHD disc.
-
Watched Chronos 2 nights ago took a few shots gosh awful movie and threw it in the trash ;D
-
had a double feature last night
Finding Dory...loved it...had more bass than I was expecting...great sound overall
Star wars TFA 3D....the 3d was outstanding!! and the sound is my pick for best of the year
-
Watched Chronos 2 nights ago took a few shots gosh awful movie and threw it in the trash ;D
I thought Chronos was interesting, but not as good by any means as Pan's Labyrinth !
-
Watched Nerve, and Mr. Right yesterday with friends and all enjoyed both movies.
-
Nerve was a really original, fun indie film. Julia Robert's niece was quite good. Soundtrack was awesome. I can see that happening in real life too - which always makes a movie just that much more scary !
-
Watched " Anthropoid " last night. Loved it - excellent war movie based on a true story. Watch the making of extra to see the effort put into making it as true to what happened as a movie can be. This one is going into my war movie collection !

never heard of it....interesting!
-
Wolverine.. Ok movie, pretty lousy image quality.
-
I watched Delirious (John Candy) and Stagecoach yesterday. I had never seen either but both were enjoyable in their own way. Stagecoach was a treat and I was really impressed with some of the stunt work later in the film. It's too bad the original negative is lost as the print(s) they used definitely have a lot of damage. Even still, Criterion did a good job with what they had to work with and it wasn't bad enough to take away from my enjoyment of the film.

Stagecoach is a classic ! haven't seen that in a long time. I might look for this on sale ! Thanks.
-
Escape from Alcatraz (Eastwood).
I had to watch it on my puny 51" Samsung plasma. Not fun without a projector as I sold my RS4810 and very much looking forward to when my new RS500 arrives (and especially when it gets calibrated by Chad B).

i thought the infiltrator was pretty good....kind of reminded me of donnie brasco though (and not nearly as good)
-
Picked up the UHD Blac-Ray of 'Mechanic: Resurrection'
-
Star Wars The Force Awakens 3D. Boy, that Star Destroyer really jumps out of the screen at about 30 minutes in. Wow!

While my wife isn't a big fan of black and white films, I'm pretty close to buying the new Marx Brothers 5 movie collection, as those are hilarious ! And we are going to screen " Singing In The Rain " for New Years Eve ( doing a Chinese take out / movie night for friends ).

My wife wasn't a big fan of the B&W either but that was because she had a preconception that they were boring. I can't remember which ones I chose now (I want to say Casablanca and It's a Wonderful Life) but I picked a couple classics to show her and now we've easily watched 300+ B&W films and some of her favorites are old B&Ws.
In regards to Singing in the the Rain, will this be her first viewing? It's a huge favorite in this house!
-
Just finished U571 whos a nice movie to watch on the CRT projector with all the dark scenes.

No, Singing In The Rain is a favorite of my wife. I'm starting the New Years movie night off with Top Gun - another fun movie. You don't realize how old you are until you see how young all the actors look ( except for Cruise - who never ages ).
-
as well as a sub workout
That is a fun movie - I watched the Blu Ray not too long ago !! Great sub( woofer ) demo movie !

Yeah it will level the house if your not carefull on the volume controle..

I already had that problem a couple of weeks ago watching " The Dark Knight Rises " with the volume set too high to begin with ( careful with that movie ) ! :-[

watching mike and dave need wedding dates tonight
-
watching mike and dave need wedding dates tonight
That is a funny movie IMO. :)

Watched White Christmas which I see dubbed as a loose remake of Holiday Inn. Holiday Inn in my opinion is far far better.
-
That is a funny movie IMO. :)
it was hysterical! really enjoyed it
tonight is BFG...heard the movie is nice..and presentation is outstanding
-
Tonight I will be watching How to train your Dragon 2.
-
Watched BFG last night..not as good as I expected but still a fun movie..

-
watched Petes dragon....was bored to tears ...nothing like the original whichi s a childhood favorite
-
Watched Sicario with my wife ( she hadn't seen it yet ) on 4K BR. Love that movie - holds up quite well with repeat viewings.
-
I started last July on upgrading my HT and (despite having many numerous "bumps", as in increased reqs) with all the improvements, I'm STILL working on the upgrades. The main objective was to improve my sound, so I have the Yamaha A3060. That led to Atmos to achieve 7.2.4, then a 2-ch amp that fits my situation for those RPs, and then the new Atmos blurays. Now working on a 4K UHD bluray player since my Panasonic is 6 years old. And then in the Spring there will be a new 4K UHD tv since my Vizio turns out to be limited. <sigh> These forums do get expensive...
But that is why I have answers for this questions -- John Wick, In the Heart of the Sea, Everest and Unbroken are the new Atmos releases I've watched. And a whole slew of re-watches just to hear how great this new HT setup can make a movie sound. And a long wishlist of 4K blurays coming (my family is wonderful at feeding my habit). 8)

Steve Jobs
great movie...much better than "jobs" after reading the biography I feel it really hit the tone of how he was...Highly recommended
-
We watched True Grit... (the remake version), and it was very good.
-
watched Don't Breathe...very very cool suspense flick....awesome sound...and room bending bass this one digs deeeeeep

Just picked that movie up. Maybe watch it tonight ( or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 4k ) !
-
watched Ted 2 last night
defintily hysterical parts...not as good as the first (sequels rarely are)
-
Did wind up watching " Steve Jobs " last night. Phenomenal performance from Fassbender. I'll watch this again just for the rapid fire dialog !
-
Watched Resident Evil-Afterlife last night. It has a little too much fake fighting in this one, but I still enjoyed it.
-
tonight is The secret Life of Pets
-
Today I am watching the new Bourne movie.
-
I watched Unbroken all the way through instead of just the intro. The first time I saw it month back was pre-Atmos. The opening is an awesome demo, but there is a constant Atmos presence throughout. Can easily be missed since it pulls into the movie.

The bomber scenes just shake my room !

Watched " Immortal Beloved " last night, with friends that hadn't seen it, and my wife ( one of her favorite films ). Great movie. Looked excellent on my RS600. Outstanding soundtrack.

I watched " Iron Sky " Friday night. Hilarious B movie fun, with pretty good special effects. For $ 5.00 on Amazon during Black Friday, totally worth having for a wacky b movie night !

Watched magnificent 7 4k this morning. Greta movie. Outstanding atmos. But was SUPER dark. Couldn't get my picture correct
I even tossed on the reg bluray. And same thing. Maybe it's meant to be that way. But too bad with Denzel being in all black
-
Quick OT question. What should I be calibrating my black level and clipping level to whenusing the Sony test patterns?

Are you watching with HDR, and what projector ? I have this 4K disc coming ( with Sully ). If the Blu Ray is equally dark, I'd say it's the transfer. Sort of like the first half of " Star Trek Beyond " is somewhat dark.

yes on the rs400
but after reading reviews...the black level is really dark (obviously in the nighttime scenes) so i guess its the transfer
-
watched
Sully 4k.....man what a GREAT transfer...top 3 imho
awesome sound which was surprising..and great new perspective on the incident especially since my wife is ATC
-
Storks 4k
just a meh movie....my son wanted to watch it and liked it....not one of the best animation movies
the transfer wasn't one of the best on 4k either which is disappointing for animation

I can't get myself to watch the remake. The original however, looks outstanding on Blu Ray. Quite the remaster. I imagine they have a 4K master from that work ready to go for a 4K version !
-
Last night, Mrs K and I watched (in Dolby Atmos):

That 4K remaster is the one I'm waiting for!! Can't wait to see Charlton in full glory... ;D
Quick story: We visited Rome (business trip) in the late '90s -- staying a week in a palazo near the Circus Maximus. On the first day walking to the Metro, I passed a wall before turning into the Circus Maximus. Immediately in front of me was a thundering, dust spewing chariot charging right at me! Caused a huge leap in my heart as I was thrown back 2000 years! Took a few seconds to adjust and realize that I would not be hit -- and come back to the present age... :-X

Nice ! Yes, Ben Hur, and Gladiator ( another favorite film of mine ) would be no brainer re - purchases in 4K. Although both look damn good now on Blu Ray.
-
Watched Into Darkness followed by Beyond in UHD BT.2020 SDR again in succession.
I can't understand why the new director made the first portion of Beyond so dark. Sometimes I think it is just because he thought to himself... If we darken these scenes, look how bright and luminous all the control panels appear. Or maybe it was a colorist who did.
I had to increase brightness 3 clicks and then back it off again once they got down to the planet.

Good question. Having watched it twice, I just seems like some of the interior shots are more subdued brightness wise. I need to re - watch this now that I have the Panasonic 4K player.
-
This one is not for everyone, but I really enjoyed The Dressmaker on Blu Ray tonight. Some really good little films come out of Australia.
I love Kate Winslet and Hugo Weaving is great in every role he takes on (excluding Megatron of course).
-
Underworld 4k
Looks outstanding in 4k. Great black levels. And the. BAss oh my the bass
-
Watched Star Wars - A New Hope last night, in honor of Carrie Fisher. I'm always amazed at how good this Blu ray looks on my RS600, considering the age of the film. A really good looking transfer. It's fun to re-watch these classic Sci Fi movies.

-
We had a New Years Eve party last night - Chinese food, champagne and watched Top Gun and Singing in the Rain ( followed by a little of the " This Is It " music video to get us to 12 midnight ! Loved watching Singing in the Rain again. Great movie.
-
After tweaking my RS500 settings for HDR, I watched The Martian UHD disc again.
I upgraded my audio for Atmos since the last time I viewed it. So disappointed to see my AVR reporting TrueHD instead.
So how many have double or even triple dipped on this title? I will be looking for a sale on the extended version of the UHD disc which has Atmos.
-
I like The Martian, but the 4K theatrical cut is the last one I buy. Good enough for me.
-
Just finished watching McCabe and Mrs Miller. Honestly it was just OK. I expected it to be better after some things I've read about it
-

Watched " Star Wars - The Force Awakens " last night, since we watched Return of the Jedi the night before. Wanted to see how well they segued from one the other. Worked pretty well in my opinion !

Last night, I watched Leon: The Professional. Older movie I had seen back in the nineties and remembered as excellent, but frankly turned out that I had no memory of the movie. This was the recently re-released Bluray version with Atmos. Excellent movie -- not for the kids. Maybe not for some adults as it's a bit tough to see an 11-year-old Natalie Portman in such a rough role and such a tough and awkward situation. Do be sure to see the bonus material that explains the casting and the director's intent. This time around I watched the extended version -- the story and cinematograph are stunning and well complimented by the Atmos soundtrack.
I never saw La Femme Nikita but just ordered that Bluray (got to fill that someday player with something). That feature the original portrayal of Leon by one of my favorite actors -- Jean Reno. (He was unbeatable in the 1998 version of Godzilla.
Couldn't resist -- just ordered both of those last in Bluray. Godzilla "Mastered in 4K" for what that's worth.

Now do you really want to remember her like that? Of COURSE you do! And as she was in Episode 4.
I intend to get that in UHD when it's released. Was filmed so that 4K is possible.

Leon is great, and the " Extended International Version " is the only one to watch. Where the Hell is the 4K Blu Ray Sony ?
Also, La Femme Nikita is another favorite of mine. Thanks for reminding me to re - watch these.

HA! I noticed you didn't include Godzilla! Like one guy said on the BRForum -- it's sort of a perverted pleasure. My HT has always made it sound good even back to the release days. I'm looking forward to the DTS HD MA version on a DTS:X optimized system. And naturally, "Mastered in 4K". 8)
-
Ya, not a Godzilla fan myself. ;)
-
Hell or High Water
Great!
-
kids wanted to watch SMurfs 2 in 4k....man what a great picture :)
Ive read this before and i agree but it doesnt make sense...but with the oppo 203 the atmos sounds better ....i know it makes zero sense since the avr is decoding...but i swear the atmos is better (and others...quite a few have claimed the same...odd)
-
Wife rooked me into bad moms last night, wasnt bad and I lol'd several times. Not my kinda flick, but oh well.
Might try Mag 7 UHD tonight.
-
My wife wanted to watch " Jupiter Ascending " last night ( in 4K ). Since I'd watched it once, I used this as a good excuse to try adjusting the dynamic conversion " slider on my Panasonic UB900. Interesting results - brightens the picture a bit without raising the blacks as far as I could tell. Made it even more " eye candy ". Not a great movie, but a bit of fun sci fi cheese that certainly looks good in 4K.

It looks pretty damn good in 4K, and those space scenes / night scenes on the RS600 look spectacular. As does Mila.
Hey - Luc Besson should cast the two Mila's in a space opera ! :-* :-*

watche Deepwater Horizon last night in 4k UHD
Picture was OUTSTANDING crystal clear.....super detailed...one of the best no doubt
sound was possibly top 3 for ATMOS and bass...wow what an assault
the movie was good..not great....but I recommend a watch
-
I'll be honest...I'm not watching much these days. With my first-time theater room in the works, prep and purchases for it, and planning, I haven't taken the time. Plus, it's just not the same after I had the full array, local dimming, 4K UHD, HDR 75" for a brief time (before realizing the home theater was going to be a reality!)!!!
I do have a couple saved until the reveal (like saving myself for marriage)....Batman v Superman, befcause I'm a fan, and Captain America: Civil War on 3D. Haven't seen either, and I can't wait!

I do have a couple saved until the reveal (like saving myself for marriage)....Batman v Superman, befcause I'm a fan, and Captain America: Civil War on 3D. Haven't seen either, and I can't wait!
Well, get working on that theater room !
-
I'm hard at it!!!! Building up a toy storage in the garage and closet. Lol....I just need to find the right deal for my last big purchases! Prices are starting to roll in. I'm so excited.....but I'll hold off until right before I'm physically ready for them... :-X

Watched " Deepwater Horizon " on 4K Blu Ray last night, on my RS600. Probably the best looking, most detailed 4K Blu Ray I've watched so far. Looked outstanding, great sound track, and I really enjoyed the movie ( as I did Peter Berg's last film - " Lone Survivor " ). A demo disc for sure.
-
Saturday night I watched the standard BD of Deepwater Horizon and the detail was outstanding, so I can imagine on UHD BD.
I watched the remastered BD of Gladiator last night. Looks very good, but appears this is coming to UHD BD this year (along with Braveheart).

Last time I watched that remastered Gladiator Blu Ray, I thought it looked better than ever ( I like the " extended cut " too - extra Joaquin Phoenix freakyness ). If they do a good job remastering Gladiator in 4K, I am down like a 4k loving clown ! ;D

Being noted over at the Blu-ray site.

That is great! 2 more buys coming up! Gladiator will be on my order as soon as I see it announced. I only have the DVD and it has always been one of my reference discs for audio since it came out shortly after I set up my first 7.1 HT.
I've been wanting to try it out on the new setup, but now will wait. Really good news!

I watched Enders Game the other night and it looked great...waiting for the 4K version today.

I really like Ender's Game. I'm a sci fi nut though. I have the 4K version, but I haven't had a chance to watch it yet.

Amazon just delivered my 4K version. :)

I watched it in 4k the other night. Great pq and awesome sound
-
watched The girl on the train 4k.
good movie...disagree with alot of the reviews! I enjoyed it...the 4k was nice but this was meant to be dark...so it was in fact a bit on the dark side...but crystal clear
-
I'm going to diverge in the opposite direction. Last nite I watched Apollo 13 on DVD. The OPPO did a fine job of rendering this to 2160 and my A3060 made the occasional "flash sound" slam me right into the story -- and what a story! I kept having to remind myself that this wasn't just another sensational movie -- it was history! As Gene Kranz stated at re-entry, "This will be our finest hour!"
Many years ago I was in a leadership class at IBM. Apollo 13 was used during a 3-day session with outstanding examples of the leadership shown by that crew and the support team. It was a marvel how much of that class came back to me so many years later. That quote was one of the examples.
Aw-w-w! I couldn't resist. Just ordered Apollo 13 in blu ray DTS HD MA! $5.99!
-
I agree that The Girl on the Train on UHD was better than I had expected. Emily Blunt was great in her role. I watched half in HDR and the other half in BT.2020 SDR from my Oppo. The SDR helped with the dark scenes.
Tonight I watched Independence Day in UHD and HDR. I was surprised how good it looked for its age. The DTS:X soundtrack really surprised me; one of the best I have heard so far.
I didn't think I would want to purchase it so I rented it from http://www.store-3d-blurayrental.com/
I decided that some discs I have purchased will never get watched a second time so renting will help me decide for those that are not a sure thing got-to-have.
-
Watched " The Hateful Eight " tonight for the first time. That's one damn fine looking Blu Ray !
-
I watched the girl on the train and thought it was a pretty good movie and thought it looked excellent in 4k uhd on the Oppo 203/ JVC RS-500.

" Quite the movie " - you can say that again! I need to watch " Kill Bill "again before making my mind up on his best movies, but I still think Pulp Fiction is my favorite, followed by Django Unchained .

Since it's raining here in Northern California, I decided it was a good day for a Sunday afternoon Western matinee. And so some friends came over and we watched one of my very favorite Westerns - " The Big Country ". Just as great as I remembered !

Thanks -- if I ever saw The Big Country, it was as a kid sometime after original release. Even after reading the review, I can't remember if I saw it or just saw previews (aka, trailers).
Big western fan! I just watched the original Magnificent Seven a few days ago. (Although I also saw the original original Seven Samurai back in my college days. That was billed as "The Magnificent Seven" -- what a disappointment until we all fought through the grainy film projected on a wall with subtitles and got into the movie. Then it was quite a hoot!)
A couple years ago, my wife gave me the three bluray set of The Magnificent Seven, Butch and Sundance, and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. I haven't watched the latter two on my new setup yet, so some fine viewing yet to come.

It's cheap enough on Amazon to add this Blu Ray to your collection. It's really an interesting character study.
I too have the original Magnificent Seven, The Wild Bunch, 3:10 to Yuma ( recent one ), True Grit ( recent one ), The Cowboys and The Comancheros ( classic John Wayne ), The Professionals, Quigley Down Under ( fun movie ), and The Man With No Name Trilogy. At this point, I'm considering that The hateful Eight and Django Unchained are also " westerns " ( at least that's where they are on my shelf ) !

last week I decided to go over the entire Hobbit and LOTR saga again, yesterday i took the opportunity to watch The Battle of The Five Armies on the JVCZ1 :P :P :P

We have finally stepped up and started watching Game of Thrones -- Atmos version! Awesome soundtrack! We ended up doing 5 episodes. Will soon have to get the second season (that was an outright requiement from LOML after getting started).
I read the books about 10 years ago, so I need to start over. And at that time Martin had not yet written the last book. These are the kinds of things that make life worth living... ;D
-
Been watching Homeland - Season 5 on Blu Ray. So far it's a great season. Not quite 1/2 way through it.

Watched inferno 4K last night.
Wow. Reference picture! Top 5 material
And the Atmos was outstanding with HUGE DEEP BASS

Ya, but how was the movie ? That entire series doesn't get the greatest reviews.

I enjoyed all three. Movies don't need to be best picture nominees for me to really enjoy them :)

Did a lot of searching for Game of Thrones options. Amazon offerings are somewhat confusing and mostly high priced. I found an Atmos set (Seasons 1-6) on eBay for $73 including shipping -- highly rated seller. Should have it within the week and will update here.
eBay is not my favorite marketplace though I have been able to successfully get a number of deals. Always lurking in my mind is whether I'm being scammed. But that's what credit cards are for... Anyway, as said, I'll update -- delivery expected NLT early next week.
-
I watched The Accountant tonight, on 4K BR. I liked the movie as did my 4 audience members. The transfer is sure wonky though. Sometimes it looks great, other time, not great.

My $73 dollar (less than half MSRP) purchase of Game of Thrones 1-6 has proved to be just fine. It actually contains all six original blu ray discs boxes with Atmos (selling now for $30 - $40 apiece individually). To say the least, I've very pleased! 8)

Watched the UHD disc Jack Reacher: Never Go Back on my Oppo 203 and JVC RS500.
I found the picture to be rather dark in HDR. I switched to BT.2020 SDR instead.
I thought the picture quality was average, but barely even noticed the Atmos soundtrack.
I am glad I rented it instead of purchase. A one time viewing was sufficient and I won't be adding this one to my collection.

A couple of the fight scenes were excruciatingly long... I used them as an opportunity to go get another beer and still be back before Reacher finished off his opponent.

Watched " Snowden " tonight. Interesting movie, great cast, looked stunning on the RS4500 !

watched trolls 4k. I saw this in the theater with my son (first theater movie in a looong time). looked and sounded 100x better at home.

"looked and sounded 100x better at home"
This is why my wife and I seldom ever go to a theater anymore -- the audio has been better at home for many years. Now with the new B6 (while not projection size), the much larger picture and amazing image AND the Atmos/DTS:X sound just make theaters mostly a disappointment. Even my grandsons now think our LR is better. Fortunately, at 12 and14 they're into a somewhat higher level movie. (And their Mom is a real stickler for age appropriate -- that would be my daughter.) :-* <pride and love all over!>
Still working through Game of Thrones -- mid-Season 3.
-
Watched " Love and Mercy " last night. very interesting true story about Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. A story I knew nothing about. Recommended.

Most of my Bluray collection is the typical action/sci-fi/horror fair but I have a few classics as well.
Last weekend I slid in Scarface. You know that feeling when something just clicks? Even though I have seen it several times I was completed absorbed, as if it was the first spin. Many people have no interest in watching a movie more than once. Thankfully I'm not one of them.

Watching a good movie you like more than once can reveal things you didn't see the first time. Some movies have to be viewed more than once ( Memento and Inception are two that come to mind ). I haven't seen Scarface in years - great flick !

In the last week I have watched:
The Martian in 4K HDR
Exodus Gods & Kings, 4K HDR
X-men Days of Future Past, 4K HDR
Dead Pool, 4K HDR
X-Men Apocalypse, 4K HDR
The Revenant, 4K HDR
The Universe, 3D 1080P
Gravity 3D, 1080P
Star Trek Into Darkness, 3D 1080P
Several Dolby Atmos clips
Watched a lot of other stuff, but too numerous to list. Yes, I have been using my new projector a lot. :)

Will be interested to hear how your projector does with the Arrival UHD disc. With Gamma D in my RS500 it was unwatchable in HDR due to how dark it is mastered. I had to switch to BT.2020 SDR.
I did have better luck with this title in HDR when testing some of the new custom gammas that Manni is creating in the other forum.

I guess one question I have is what exactly in a dark movie like this requires HDR ? Sully is another example - there is no reason to think HDR makes Sully look better. It ain't " Pacific Rim ". Nothing explodes ( except in a brief dream sequence ). I will probably watch Arrival using 4K SDR Rec. 709. I'm guessing that Jeff of Accucal will be able to improve the HDR preset so it isn't as dark either. Once he gets here !

Watched Arrival on 4K Sat. night with a bunch of friends - great film ! It was dark - obviously that is the way it was shot ( my wife thinks to show how dark humans are when they are afraid ). Anyway, with the HDR pre-set on the RS4500, it was perfectly watchable in mid laser. I asked the one person there who had seen it in the theater, and he said it looked the same, so that's about all you can ask.

I watched " 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi " last night. I like a good war movie, and a good true story, and I thought this movie was very well done. I'm not a fan of Michael Bay movies at all, but this was good. Great picture and audio too.

Moana.....I swear...if it came out in 4k I wouldnt buy it...the BD is THAT good...wow what a stunning picture
blu-ray.com certainly agrees ( although they wonder about a 4K version ) -
" Moana's 1080p transfer is flat-out gorgeous, maybe one of the most vibrant the format has seen. Colors are resplendent. Blue waters sparkle and natural greens are lush, both standing apart against many of the earthier tones that define much of the rest of the environments. Beyond that, fiery oranges dazzle and leap off the screen. Support colors -- Moana's multicolored pet, for example -- shine. Color saturation, balance, and brilliance are all in order. The image is sharp and revealing. The Blu-ray presents the animation's most intimate natural and character textures with amazing efficiency and clarity. Environments are crisp, characters well defined and organic. Hair flows with incredible precision, seemingly down to individual curls or strands. Woods, woven rugs, attire, sandy beaches, every element the film has on offer dazzles. Blacks are healthy and deep. Artifacts are zero. The image is flat-out tremendous, maybe the finest certainly in the animated realm and easily one of the top on the format. One can only wonder how a higher resolution UHD with HDR colors could have improved on it (get on board, Disney!). "

" Allied " was good - nicely done. The 4K Blu Ray looked outstanding. And the audio was good - LFE during the London bombing was easily felt in my room. I'm looking forward to re - watching this with my wife.

Some of these newer Blu Rays look so good upscaled to 4K on my projector, I'm not sure I'd care that much, unless they can do a really good job with the 4K version.

I watched " American Sniper " last night. 2nd time I've watched it. Great movie, and it sure looked good on my RS4500 ! Bradley Cooper does a great job IMO.

I agree with Moana comments!

Watched " John Wick " on 4K last night. Hadn't actually sat down and watched the entire 4K version. Looked mighty good, fun movie. Now I'm looking forward to # 2 !!

I watched the extended cut of " Gladiator " last night. I enjoy this movie still ! Looked really good, but if they ever come out with a 4k remaster, I'm on it in a flash !

Watched Passengers. It was way better than I expected based on the ratings and word of mouth. But I like Prometheus too and that seems to get a lot of hate. Go figure.

It is extremely sharp in my opinion. A couple of sites mention that it was shot using ARRI Alexa 65 cameras in ARRIRAW (6.5K) format, and mastered to a true 4K Digital Intermediate.

That's good to hear. It should arrive tomorrow in time to watch. Might be a new reference quality disc, along with Hacksaw Ridge.

LOVED passengers! 4k was outstanding...sound was outstanding (although a 30Hz monster) highly recommended

Another thumbs up for Passengers. Watched in 4k/Atmos on my RS400 last night (using Arve's Custom Curves), and it was spectacular. Sharpness and vividness in many scenes were as good as I've seen on my setup.

Smoking good picture on the RS4500. Great soundtrack too. I never really though about what would happen if you lost artificial gravity, and then suddenly regained it. Ouch !
This is right up there with Hacksaw Ridge for reference 4K material, that's for sure !

Starting around a month ago, Manni01 and Arve, along with many others, developed a method of creating Custom Gamma Curves that would do the job of watching HDR on our projectors, better than JVC's Gamma D. For most of us, including me, Gamma D crushed shadow detail, making it unpleasant to watch in HDR, without bumping up Blackness drastically.
The 'other' forum has pages and pages of information on the RS500/RS600 thread, as the tools and approaches changed almost daily. Enough to make your head spin at times!
lovingdvd in the other forum posted a pretty good summary of the simplest current way of creating a custom gamma curve for your particular setup here:
Speed Guide to creating a Custom Curve (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digital-hi-end-projectors-3-000-usd-msrp/2222586-official-jvc-rs600-rs500-x950r-x750r-x9000-x7000-owners-thread-759.html#post51467921)
It's reasonably straightforward, simpler than a JVC Autocalibration. This is what I've done on my system, and is my preferred way of watching HDR now. In fact, I went ahead and sold the HDFury Integral that I had bought a few days before all of the custom curve business started hittin the scene, since I prefer the new approach over the SDR-BT2020 that can be achieved with the Integral.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Most of us with RS500/RS600 projectors consider Gamma D to be broken. With the JVC Projector Tool, I now have a custom Gamma that finally allows me to watch every UHD disc in HDR. HDR that beats BT.2020 SDR in my opinion.
Then add an HDFury Linker to remove the HDR metadata flag (without any HDR to SDR conversion) to complete the experience:
- JVC projector does not auto-select Gamma D so your selected custom gamma is not overridden.
- JVC projector does not disable Auto-Iris which gives back real fade-to-blacks.

Yes, I should have mentioned the Linker option.
Personally, I do not use or like DI (either of the 2 options available) because of iris pumping, which while it's not all that frequent, really bugs me when it does occur. I know of others with more knowledge and experience than I do who share this preference to not use DI, but it seems we are in the minority.
But it would be nice to not have to manually switch Gamma whenever I watch HDR content. I'm just not sure it's worth $200 to me at this point in time! :-\

thank you! What is the tool he speaks of that is needed? sorry for the newb questions
I thought he had links to the relevant downloads, but apparently not.
Here's a link to Arve's Software. Download the folder there to a folder on the PC you'll be using to connect via ethernet to your projector:
Arve's Software (https://github.com/arvehj/jvcprojectortools/tree/threaded_menu)
Here's a link to his Readme, which gives general instructions, along with a link to the Python software that you'll need to install as well, in order to run his 'Tool' 8):
Readme File (https://github.com/arvehj/jvcprojectortools/blob/threaded_menu/README.md)
These links, along with the first one I sent, should get you up and running. It sounds a bit complicated, but it's not. The software enables you to really fine-tune the curve, with a variety of dos-line commands, but you don't really need this, as the "speed" guide will accomplish most if not all of what you need to get a much better picture than with Gamma D.
Good luck, and post back if you run into issues.

Watched " Rogue One " on Blu Ray for the first time last night. Good film. And I must say, it totally segue's into the original film in a very clever manner. Maybe better than " Revenge of the Sith " ( which I haven't watched in a while ).
-
Watched " Patriot's Day " on 4K tonight. Powerful film. Extremely well done. My guests and I were pretty much on the edge of our seat the entire movie. i thought it was respectful of the victims and the entire event.

Watched Hidden Figures 4k as my first UHD on my JVC RS500. Loved the movie and the picture quality was beautiful!
I've got that one coming soon !
-
That's good to hear. It should arrive tomorrow in time to watch. Might be a new reference quality disc, along with Hacksaw Ridge.
So Craig, Hacksaw is that good? I mean from a PQ and SQ standpoint...I bought it, but it is still in my stash, waiting for my room construction to be finished. I have several movies that, over the last several months, I've "saved myself" (and eyes and ears) for the new theater room...I just got the X770RB in on Monday, Denon 4300 about a week before, and the Oppo 203 when it came out...It's all staying put for now....Can't wait...can't wait! I should be settling in with everything next weekend....

I think it's one of the better 4K movies I've got. Picture detail is excellent. Very clean transfer too. Sound track that is really well mixed - LFE shakes the room during explosions ( my guest last night made particular mention of that ). Overall, it's hard to beat. And the true story is amazing. The battle scenes are graphic though - " parental guidance suggested ".
-
Watched " Patriot's Day " on 4K tonight. Powerful film. Extremely well done. My guests and I were pretty much on the edge of our seat the entire movie. i thought it was respectful of the victims and the entire event.
I agree 100%, this was powerful and it was very well done.

I'm a parent, and I can't wait to guide myself to see this movie! Lol...looking forward to it.
-
Watched a movie I hadn't seen for a while last night, with friends that had never seen it - Apocalypto ! Looked amazing on my RS4500 ! I just noticed that this Blu-ray is out of print, and selling for $ 124.34 on Amazon. If I told my wife that, she'd say " sell it ". I'm keeping it though ! :)
-
Watched La La Land - great movie ! I loved how it was shot on film, in 2.55:1 Cinemascope, and had elements of older classic films, and nods to the modern era in there too. Nicely done !

...it's strange that I'm physiologically strained in watching blue ray when I want those that I already have to be issued in 4K!...the list of 4K releases aren't flowing, but...I need to change my attitude re: my blue ray collection (as well as regular DVDs) and start enjoying them again...

I don't watch any DVD's anymore ( except Team America - World Police ). But quite a few great movies are only on Blu-ray, and not 4K yet. " Fury " and many recent releases look outstanding on Blu-ray. Plus, I'm going to have a few themed " movie weeks " coming up, and those movies are only on Blu-ray right now too.
-
...just a note: it's not as if I don't watch DVDs and blu-ray. I have the JVC projector which has the e-shift capability and
certainly helps in viewing...
...late note: I just watched the blue ray disc of Captain American The First Avenger and...it looked sensational...I suppose it must be due to the JVC projector's e-shift and the OPPO 205's wanting to play everything at 4k (DVDs, blu-rays)...so, even with this crazy player/projector combination doing their own thing and even if it wasn't really true 4K, it looked wonderful (not to mention that film itself is outstanding)...

Emphasis on the bold. If the studios want my money, they will need to release more 4K titles. Meanwhile, I have many BR/DVDs in-house that I should watch again.

Finally got around to watching " Hidden Figures " on 4K Blu Ray last night. Fabulous movie, great looking disc too !
-
Since May is " Mental Health Awareness Month ", we watched " Fight Club " tonight. I forgot how off the wall that movie is! The Blu Ray looked amazing for a film from 1999 !
-
Watched " The Lincoln Lawyer " last night. Fun movie, great sound track, great looking Blu-ray.
-
Kill Bill 1 & 2 double feature - the perfect Mother's Day movie. That is one angry mom ! ???

Watched " Star Trek Into Darkness " on 4K BR last night. I have a few screen shots in my home theater thread.

I'll have to check that out.
-
Watched " Lion " last night. Excellent movie, great true story. Not the best transfer though - this isn't demo material by any means. Although the Blu-ray is supposedly true to the source material.
-
Since it is now available for under $20, I finally purchased the Man of Steel UHD disc.
It had been so long since I previously watched it on Blu Ray, I either forgot about the horrid shaky cam effect or perhaps the UHD version makes it more obvious. It was especially jarring in the opening scenes and I found myself checking the signal path to see if something was amiss.
The audio experience was much improved this time around since I have added a pair of upward firing speakers for Atmos, and replaced a single 12" sealed sub in my 20x40 room with two of the new PSA V1801 18" ported (vented) subs. There are so many movies in my collection I now need to watch again.
-
Watched The Social Network last night. I forgot what a good film this is - nicely shot too.
-
Watched " Interstellar " last night - love this movie ! Was better the third time around. Friends agreed ( their 2nd viewing ).
-
Watched " The Machinist " starring Christian Bale, as part of my " mental illness awareness month " film festival. It was just as creepy / disturbing the 2nd time around ! :o
-
Watched " Inception " last night with my wife. Hadn't seen that movie in a while. Great Nolan film. Looked excellent on the RS4500. The Hans Zimmer soundtrack was outstanding. I don't think I had my twin SVS PC12+ cylinders last time I watched it, or my Martin Logan Motion speaker system.
-
Watched " The Founder " last night - interesting story !
-
I'm trying to catch my wife up on movies she's missed. Sat night it was " The Equalizer ", with Denzel Washington. Last night it was " John Wick " on 4K.
-
Watched " Donnie Darko " - the director's cut last night ( my wife's pick ). Never watched the director's cut before. I may like it better. Great movie, again !

picture was stunning as well
highly recommended

"Oblivion" for the umpteenth time...I don't know why but I pulls me in with every viewing.

I really enjoy that movie too. Great picture and sound. You ever watch the extras ? Cool that they built a full size model of the ship !

Yeah, I felt the same way. To me, they did a good job of setting up the individual runs of violence. (Though my wife didn't agree -- liked the movies but thought it was non-stop violence. I thought it was an amazing mix of violence with the right portion of "slow down, catch your breath". PQ was great and sound absolutely awesome!
BTW, did I mention it was violent?

Keanu Reeves spent a lot of actual range time shooting 3 gun tactical courses prior to this film - it certainly showed in the action set pieces. Amazing choreography and stunt work. Realistic firearm handling and reloading. My wife thought the first one was " just a shoot 'em up " and didn't join me watching it. She does like " Eastern Promises " and " The Equalizer ", so go figure !
-
Watched John Wick 2 last night. 4K video quality on this disc was really good and the sound track had great dynamics. Since I was watching this one alone, I ran it near reference level. Some of the gun shots sounded a lot like actual gunshots.

I was worried I might get a visit from the police when I watched it at 11PM. One night I am going to walk outside my house while this disc is playing to hear what it sounds like from there.

I did that last week after watching " Mad Max : Fury Road " cranked pretty loud. We live in an area with 1/4 - 1/3 acre lots, so while I could hear it, I've never had anyone notice ( or complain ). Helps to have 2 x 6 construction throughout our house !

I rented this UHD disc.
Sound? Yes
Picture? Yes
Story? Lacking
Would I watch it again? Doubtful.

Watched " Manchester By The Sea " with my wife last night. Interesting, well done drama. I liked the way the back story unfolded through flashbacks. Stunning cinematography !
-
Watched " Birdman " last night with my wife ( who had never seen it ). 2nd time I've watched it. I think it's a really interesting film, and my wife liked it. It's different, and sometimes different is good !
-
I had read great things about The Jungle Book, in 3D, for quite a while, and had been watching prices. It finally dropped a little, and I picked it up.
Watched it tonight with my wife, and holy cow, those reviews were right on the money!! The details, the color, the 3D effect, were all incredible. The sound track matched it as well. The movie/story were excellent, with great humor provided by some excellent voice-overs. Highly recommended!
One of the most immersive, impressive audio-visual experiences I've had in my theater to date!
Don
(RS400, 160" 2.35:1 Screen Innovations Screen Solar White 1.3 Gain. Masked to 1.78:1 for this movie, so basically 129" equivalent.)

The wife and I watched " Fences " last night. Really good drama, great acting. Incredible looking Blu-ray - one of the best pictures I've seen. I like Denzel in just about anything though. Time to watch " Flight " and " Unstoppable " again. :)
-
We watched Why Him? (4k HDR) last night. Incredible picture - probably the best I've seen yet on my projector. Detail was incredible with great depth and very natural colors and highlights.
Movie was very enjoyable as well (and Zoey Deutch is very easy on the eyes!).
-
Clapton at 70 is glorious on BR! Finally off my wishlist and on my OPPO.
-
Watched John Wick (1st one) tonight. Made a mistake and put in the regular bluray and didn't notice until after the movie finished. I had seen the movie before but loved it just as much the second time.
I then checked out the 4k version and thought it was absolute crap. Nowhere as detailed as the bluray and so murky and dim - like I was wearing sunglasses. This with my projector firing on high with the dynamic range on my Panasonic raised... what a disappointment.

I'll need to throw the Blu-ray on and see what's going on. I doubt this will be the case with John Wick 2.

I watched John Wick 2 afterwards. It was much better. At the beginning it's VERY dark with extreme HDR highlighting which made me squint because of the brightness (headlights, neon signs) but struggle to actually discern cars etc (basically the action on screen). I thought "oh boy here we go again" but the movie gets much better as it goes along and the detail in the blacks are pretty impressive. I turned on dynamic laser for this one (and it performed flawlessly) if only to tone down the highlights a bit as they are unnaturally bright. For example, indoor scenes were hard to watch because the lighting (lamps in the room etc) were SO bright. My eyes were wiped out after seeing this one. It's impressive but unnatural and a little weird - I might have to check a few key scenes on the bluray to see how they compared because it looks to me like someone got carried away with the HDR color grading on this one. People rave about this and I get why, but I almost wanted a different gamma curve so that the highlights weren't burning my retinas but where the dark scenes wouldn't lose contrast.
-
Best Buy delivered my Steelbook UHD versions of Fifth Element and Leon today. I watched Fifth Element tonight; in HDR of course. I wasn't disappointed. Sharper than I expected with vibrant color and some searing highlights. It was like watching to it for the first time. The Atmos soundtrack was the icing on the cake.

Darn - my Amazon copy won't be here for a week !

Watched " Being John Malkovich " last night - i'd had the Criterion Blu-ray for a while, but I haven't watched this film since i had it on HD DVD. I forgot how funny and insane this movie is. My guests were doubled over laughing at times !
-
I've got a bunch of new movies to watch - The Zookeeper's Wife ", " Blue is the Warmest Color ", I have Leon and The 5th Element arriving in 4K, " The Fate Of The Furious " and " The Lost City Of Z " are coming too. Going to be busy watching movies !

Make sure you watch Fate of the Furious when you can turn up the volume. The low frequency bass in the DTS:X MA soundtrack is great.
I rented Blue and have to agree with others that it has probably has the most realistic skin tones I have ever seen from any Blu Ray and probably not bested by any UHD Blu Ray yet. The spaghetti looked delicious as well. The movie is 3 hours long!
Fifth Element looked incredible.
Leon looked good as well, but not that much better than the special edition Blu Ray that was created from a 4K master. I am sure others will say it looks great, but it didn't grab and hold my attention like Fifth Element did.
-
Had some friends over to watch " Horse Feathers " and " Duck Soup " ! Fun movies with some great one liners - too many to remember even a fraction of them !

Last night I watched " Ex Machina " in 4K with friends that had never seen the movie. I love this movie ! The 4K version looks cleaner for the most part than the Blu-ray.
-
my new reference picture quality disc...
Fate of the Furious 4K
wow
-

Fate of the Furious 4K
wow
I have it but have not had the opportunity to watch it yet - you are such a tease !
-
I recently watched Kong: Skull Island and The Great Wall (both in UHD).
Both films looked stunning with The Great Wall the most impressive. The movies themselves were OK entertainment - very loud action films where the soundtracks are equally impressive.
-
My wife needed some cheering up last night ( she hit a deer that ran in front of her while she was doing 40mph on her tri bike during the Donner lake Triathlon Sunday - she's pretty beat up ), so we watched one of her favorite movies - " Fletch ". Chevy Chase is still a hoot in this. Geena Davis was an unknown back then.

Thanks. Maybe " Caddyshack " tonight, since yesterday was the 37th anniversary according to Cindy Morgan ( Lacy Underalls ) on Facebook !

Ok I will now 100% never listen to Ralph Potts for reviews. He just cuts and pastes reviews from other discs.
His review for boss baby and trolls is literally verbatim for the Blu-ray Disc. He even forgot to change the "trolls coming to bluray" to read boss baby lmao. Joke

I had previously rented The Great Wall UHD disc. I bought a copy from Best Buy yesterday for under $20.
It is a gorgeous film to watch with all the brightly colored armor worn by the soldiers. The soundtrack's bass is also outstanding; especially the drums and the "black powder" explosions outputted from my dual 18 inch subs.
Too bad it's still mostly just another creature feature.
I also thought Ghost in the Shell was better than the reviews I have read. But then I have never seen the original animated version to compare to.
I didn't find it overly dark as some have complained. But I was disappointed with the soundtrack; both the lack of bass and the low recording levels. I ended up raising the volume 3 decibels above my normal setting (-9 instead of -12/-13) just to hear conversations clearly.

We watched Ghost in the Shell, and it was very good...the only complaint I had was that the dark scenes were darker than I recall they were in the theater.

I put it in for about 10 mins last night. But was really tired. I'll try again tonight.

Watched " The Zookeeper's Wife " last night with my wife. We both thought it was a good WWII drama. Being based on a true story is even better.
-
I've been on a roll catching up on movies ( and re - watching some good ones )!
Tuesday - Sicario in 4K
Wed. - The Fifth Element in 4K ( looked outstanding for a 20 year old movie ) !
Last night - The Fate of the Furious in 4K - what a hoot ! Fun movie, awesome picture and sound track !
-
Watched " Colossal " last night - that is one wacked film. I liked it ! :D
-
Watched " Ghost In The Shell " on 4K UHD BR last night with a friend ( thanks Brian ). We liked it ( we're Scarlet fans ). Dark film, but not too dark on the RS4500 ! Great sound track !!

no prob...glad it made it there
and more importantly glad you liked it
-
Just watched War of the Worlds. Decent picture quality, although not particularly impressive by today's standards.
But dang, the sound track was positively frightening in places. My low end is an iNuke 6000 powering a home-made (by someone else) 8' subwoofer, with 4 18" Stereo Integrity drivers. Amp was running in the red for a while, and the output was intense!! Quite the work-out, but everything, including my ear drums, seemed to have survived!
-
Alien Covenant 4k
i liked it alot...not sure why its getting bashed.
picture was great...and the atmos when the alien makes its signiture sound was amazing
-
Lincoln Lawyer UHD disc. Picture quality was excellent. I had forgotten how much I liked this movie since I first watched in on Blu Ray HD.

I'm looking forward to this. I liked Prometheus too, so I'm sure I'll like this.

My wife and I watched " The Promise " last night. We both enjoyed it - good movie. Note that while the critics at RT gave it 50%, the actual audience score is 93%. I'll side with the other audience members on this. If you like a good period movie, it's quite interesting. Plus I like Charlotte Le Bon !
This movie looks stunning - great cinematography !!
-
Watched "Alien:Covenant" last night. Other than the 4K UHD Blu-ray freezing up mid way ( I had to clean it - a brand new disc - then it worked ), I liked it ! Fassbender is getting some good movie roles over the years - this included !

I watched " Matchstick Men " last night on Blu-ray. Yes, I know it's a 14 year old movie, but I'd never seen it, and it's a Ridley Scott film of all things. It had a seriously good wacked out ending that I never saw coming. Made the whole film worth while.
-
I realized afterwards that I watched Wonder Woman with Gamma D selected in my RS500! I did not have the Disable HDR option selected in my HDFury after performing some tests. And I still thought it looked good. Now I have a reason to watch it again. ;D
With Joss Whedon taking over the Justice League movie directing from Zach Snyder, I am hoping for Gal Gadot to be more prominently featured in the upcoming movie than what Snyder might have done.
-
watched the 4k UHS E.T. last night
best the movie has ever looked...great upgrade imho...the dts-x was nice too
love to be able to share this movie with my son (who is the age i was when i first saw it in theaters)

Absolutely it's supposed to be campy ! And, it's a stealth critique of the first Gulf War. Although that went right over my head for a long time.

Watching " The Princess Bride " tonight, in honor of the 30th anniversary this week. :)

HA ! I have a couple that comes and watches movies a lot at our house. One day several years ago I mentioned a couple of new Blu-rays I had - " Planet Terror " and " Deathproof ". And they said " we saw those in the theater - those were terrible movies. And I said " 'you do know they were '50's B movie send ups / satires, right " ? And they said " what ? We thought they were serious " ! Haha !

Looks like a good thriller. I may have to check this one out. I watched a french film on Netflix the other night called 'Raw'. It was very interesting I'll say. :)

Watched an interesting and well done film last night - Jackie. Portman does an outstanding job. And the way the film is shot is quite interesting (on 16mm film, with quite a bit of actual footage from the 1960's seamlessly blended in ). My wife and I found it fascinating.

You're Kidding?! This is such a cool movie. Gary Oldman, he da man! Snap some pics when you get the chance. I'm wondering if I should buy since I have it on the latest Blu-Ray rendition.

Somehow I missed this movie, but Gary Oldman vs Anthony Hopkins - come on, that has to be a treat ! I'll try and shoot some screen shots.

So, what did you think? Any screen captures?
Haven't had a chance to shoot screen shots. It looks OK for a 25 year old film. Not sure what the previous Blu-ray version looks like (and I have not watched the included Blu-ray ), but I found it satisfactory for an older film. Not sure what to expect - older catalog titles are a bit tricky. And then I got too into the movie to really analyze the film !

My question was reguarding the movie and not the picture quality. I don't think it's going to be much better than the BD so I'm skipping buying it again.

I agree, excellent movie! I was so pissed I bought it on Blu-Ray when it came out, the same with 'Split'. Then they announced the UHD release for 3 months later. Most do same day as the Blu-ray. Oh well, not rebuying, both Blu-rays looked excellent.

I just received and watched from Twilight Time, "Sayonara" starring Marlon Brando. I had fond memories of this Joshua Logan production and last night's viewing did not change with time. It is a wonderful film. The blu-ray in my opinion is outstanding...the colors and the sharpness of the images...it's almost as if time has stood still...1958 was a great year for memorable films and "Sayonara" is one of them. Give yourselves a treat and get it!

So what did you think?
I watched in in HDR10 on my JVC RS500 and in Dolby Vision on my LG OLED. But for me, the DTS:X soundtrack was the best part (besides Charlize and Sofia). Especially the stairwell fight that carried on into the room.
I have watched it three times now. It is one that I can keep going back to.

I've watched it before, but not since I did some reworking of my custom gamma curves, but we played Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in 4k/HDR last night with some friends, and I was blown away! The level of detail available throughout, both in normally lit scenes as well as in darker more shadowy scenes was spectacular, and oh my, the colors in the various space scenes and other pyrotechnics!! Definitely 'out of this world'!! And the Atmos sound track was most immersive as well.
Our friends were similarly blown away!! And what a fun movie - a thoroughly enjoyable evening in every respect.
-
I watched Logan Lucky this weekend. I was blown away by the picture quality. A film that didn't have anything in the way of CGI, the intermediate was 4k and so we have a true 4k disc.
The performances and plot were very good. The movie has a bit of a laid back feel to it (despite it being a heist film) that seemed to fit well with its setting and the plot is clever enough to keep you engaged and the ending is satisfying.
Highly recommended.

The performances and plot were very good. The movie has a bit of a laid back feel to it (despite it being a heist film) that seemed to fit well with its setting and the plot is clever enough to keep you engaged and the ending is satisfying.
Highly recommended.
Have to agree with you on this one - watched this a couple of weeks ago, and your assessment is spot on.

I'm looking forward to watching this again - I think it will be even better the 2nd time around. The picture is amazing - top tier 4K BR for sure.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is hilarious - there are more one liners in that movie than I can count !

I just have to say I cannot wait for Sicario 2 to come out!!!!!!!!!!

I loved Sicario ! #2 hopefully will be just as good !

I watched " Spectre " last night on Blu-ray. It looked pretty darn good on the RS4500 / Paladin DCR lens combo, despite being spoiled by 4K lately. this was a special request - a " James Bond Martini Movie Night " last night, with vodka martinis ( shaken, not stirred ) followed by chocolate martinis. Packed house, and everybody loved it ! Quite a few martini glasses to clean this morning though !

I want to not have to work for a living and hang out at Craig's!
Okay....back to reality.

I pull these movie parties ( and other parties ) off after work. You just need to live closer ! I call it " Fun As A Scorched Earth Policy ". ;D

I just watched Hugo tonight. I was shocked by how good it looked. Exceptionally sharp and detailed, wonderfully saturated colors, excellent detail for both shadow and highlights. I could have been convinced it was 4k if I didn't know better.
And the soundtrack was just as impressive. Lots of music, which sounded incredibly real and natural, along with well defined sound effects and low frequency depth when the scene needed it.
The story was also quite good, with a very 'magical' quality. Great family movie as well.

I love Hugo ! Great movie. If you get this movie and watch it afterwards as a double feature ( it's only 15 minutes long ), it will give you an entirely new appreciation of Martin Scorsese's appreciation of Georges Melies work and what a tribute Hugo really is. And you get to see a movie that's 116 years old too - one of the first films ever made !
I need to watch this again soon - thanks for the reminder !

Great idea! The Blu-ray is kind of pricey for 15 minutes, but it is available on Amazon Prime, so I'll start there. The b/w version is also on Prime.

This is how we finance film restoration ! It's how I support " the arts " ! :)

Watched How to Train Your Dragon, The Hidden World. HDR looked very good. The color and pop of this movie was really good. I also watched Venom. Venom has been out for a while and I could not remember if I had seen it or not, so kept passing it up. Finally rented it last night. Glad I did. Liked the movie.

Watched Edward Scissorhands last night with friends in my home theater. What a great, classic movie ! I love pulling out old favorites to watch. It's what's great about having a home theater. Actually looked really good on my RS4500 !

Avengers 4k
I REALLY did not intend to watch the Marvel Universe in order. But a few new 4Ks came out and I started doing just that.
I am so ENJOYING 4K that every night I seem to be putting on a movie or half of one and picking up the conclusion the next night. How many of us do that?

I plan on doing just that. I missed quite a few of them, and my movie nut buddy told me which ones were most important - since I'm not interested in all 22. So here is my line up - to start soon, all now on 4K Blu-ray. Maybe after I finish a few audio improvements -
Marvel Movies to watch before Endgame - the Spaghetti Order:
Iron Man (2008 )
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
The Avengers (2012)
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Captain America : Civil War
Black Panther (2018 )
Doctor Strange (2016)
Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Avengers: Infinity War (2018 )
Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018 )
Captain Marvel (2019)
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
-
Gosh, you really need to include Thor. Thor and especially Loki and the introduction of the Cosmic Cube is essential!

Alright - you talked me into it. Found it for under $20.00 on 4K BR. Where would you slot it into that list ?

After Ironman

Craig:
I have a different take on these movies and that’s okay. First, I did an overview of them, months ago, for our site: https://discuss.avscience.com/index.php?topic=2141.0
You mentioned that your buddy told you of, “The MOST IMPORTANT” one to watch. If that is your goal, that is fine. It would not be mine.
I like to watch “good movies,” movies that I enjoy. (Forgive me Martin Scorsese). And I only didn’t like three of them: Thor Dark World, Iron Man 2 and Iron Man 3. Well half of Iron Man 3.
Your list leaves out BOTH Spider-Man movies, which are very popular. And the very last one is an epilogue to Endgame. Both were fun movies.
I enjoyed the first Ant-Man because it was a comedic heist movie. Avengers: Ultron was not as good as the first Avengers movie, but was a fun watch. The Incredible Hulk move could have been better, but it was an intriguing piece to the puzzle that added more about the super-soldier program, SHIELD and a surprise ending that, for the first time, had the star of one Marvel movie (Robert Downey Jr. appear, as his character, at the end of the movie.)
But if you’d like, I can keep you up to date on what “Marvel Universe” pieces you many miss. For example, Iron Man 2 develops SHIELD and gives the group its name. Here it begins to supersede the FBI and CIA. It also shows Colson role in it. The Black Widow is introduced and she is a SHIELD agent. Colson is called away to New Mexico where he finds the immovable hammer of Thor in the desert. And Pepper and Tony develop their relationship.
As for Iron Man 3: If it is ever on cable or something, watch the first hour. It is Downey as his best. A great performance of Tony Stark, not Iron Man, that shows how much the character has changed. This becomes an important part of Endgame.
-
I have Iron Man 2 and 3, but didn't like them enough to watch them again any time soon. I'm not buying them on 4K.
Not really into Spiderman at all. Everyone has to draw the line somewhere.
I have Avengers: Age of Ultron - a bunch on my list I've never seen but now have on 4K. I just need 2 - 3 weeks free to run a Marvel film festival ( and have Thor arrive ).
-
Just enjoy what you have. But remember, if you let Thanos do a finger snap you may lose half of your collection!

Iron Man 3 is the only Marvel movie I don't own and I'll probably ask for the UHD for Christmas since I don't own it. I'm not "upgrading" any of my Blu-ray copies to 4K since they are all upconversions anyway.

With HDR though they should be better. I was missing 1/2 of these anyway, so I didn't have to upgrade those. I have all of these now on 4K. This will be a great run - I need my bass traps and those additional SB2000's first !
Iron Man (2008 )
Thor - thanks to Barry

I am watching them over again after acquiring them all in UHD, in this order:

I was surprised at how good Iron Man looked in UHD. It also seems to have a better Atmos track than many of the others.

Those weren't out in Sep 2, 2018 when the article came out. Those get added to the end of that list. Two of them are on my list. Not really into Spiderman or animated movies at all.

I watched this last night with friends - it's been quite a while since I've seen this. What a great movie ! I laughed so hard I nearly spit out my wine. ::)

Watched the Arrow Films version of : Donnie Darko " for the first time last night. Looks good for a 19 year old film. Forgot how much I loved this film ( it's been a few years ) ! Fun to see all these stars nearly 20 years younger too !

rewatched Konng Skull Island 4k last night...man what a killer soundtrack! room was rumbling
-
Gods of Egypt (2016)
-
With few UHD discs released recently, I rented The Rhythm Section BD with Blake Lively and Jude Law.
I found the video quality to be excellent and when upscaled by MadVR it looked better than many 4K discs I have viewed.
The DTS MA track is quite lively. The LFE really hit in a couple of scenes. I have a concrete floor and I swear I felt it rumbling.
I never would have rented this movie based on the title. It was Blake Lively that got me interested and she doesn't disappoint.

Well, this wasn't a Blu-ray, but this thread is by far the most active for this type of post, so I hope I'm forgiven for this infraction! 8)
I watched Eurovision Song Contest last night, which is HDR, on Netflix. The movie itself was funny, silly, touching at times, and for me, a welcome break from the daily stress of living in a Covid 19 world.
The picture quality was simply stunning throughout the movie. The detail was phenomenal, colors really popped, the HDR impact was delightful (but not unnatural), giving it an almost '3D' like effect. To my photographers eye, it seemed like the depth of field was generally wider than what I typically see in most movies, which may account in part for some of that 3D effect.
And the soundtrack, with a lot of music, was thoroughly enjoyable - crisp, clear, floating voices, and resounding bass tracks. As with many streaming titles, I had to bump up the volume level several dB from my usual, but once I did that, it was extremely satisfying.
Now, there likely will not be any Oscar nominations for this film, and I'm sure it wouldn't stand up to serious film critique. But it was a very pleasant diversion, with way more eye and ear candy, than you might expect from a movie like this, especially from a streaming source.

Not Blu-ray either, but my wife and I just binged watched "Poldark" on Amazon Prime the past couple of weeks (5 seasons, 43 episodes). The first 3 seasons were outstanding, but the writing and story took a turn for the worse starting in season 4 (which was just above average) and fell off the cliff in season 5 (well below average). We stuck it through knowing that 5 was the last season and we will miss the characters and their story. Despite its flaws at the end, I'd still recommend it.
-
The last Blu-ray ( 4K in this case ) I watched was " Rocket Man " with friends that hadn't seen it last Friday night, and " Hans Zimmer Live in Prague " the night before that. Both have killer Dolby Atmos sound tracks !

I listen to the Zimmer disc a lot. Whenever we are playing a board game or have people over for a BBQ. Everyone seems to love it and the bass is to die for!

I am new to this forum, been on the other one since the early 2000's and thought I would throw out my last one I watched. I watched the new Shout! bluray of Graveyard Shift. I love that movie and it still holds up today if you can get past the wooden acting and the cheapy fx but Brad Dourif is on point in this one.

Last night the hurricane was roaring through and we lost power but thankfully the whole house generator was working just fine. Me and the wife decided to watch Gotcha! (1985) from KL Studio Classics. This movie is a nice little trip back to the 80's. I had to remind my wife that it was a game also you could by at KB Toys or Toys R Us, not to mention a NES game.
Gotcha! Commercial (https://youtu.be/1jRrstlEr-U)

Yeah it was. The movie though has nothing to do with the game really but that is usual. Tonight is probably Skinner (1993).

I watched the Blu-ray of "The Haunting" last night (I had never seen the entire movie). Typically this isn't my genre, but I really enjoyed it. The soundtrack kicks some serious ass too. I'll have a review up some time this week.

watched Motherless Brooklyn
was good not great. but interesting nonetheless and the picture quality was outstanding

The last Blu-ray I watched was National Velvet - which I had never seen. Good movie. Great backstory to the movie too. Elizibeth Taylor does almost all the riding herself in the film, at age 12. A talent even then.
