Title: JVC DLA-R//S500U
Post by: ed weinman on November 12, 2016, 08:41:45 PM
I'm having a terrible time getting NETFLIX to be view able on my JVC.

Equipment:
...Dish HOPPER receiver with 25ft. HDMI cable directly to HDMI1 JVC input...
...Blu-ray Pioneer Elite player connected to the Anthem Statement D2 v 3D surround player then the HDMI cable out
   to the JVC HDMI2 input...
...Dish Joey receiver in the bedroom HDMI'd to my 47: Samsung tv.

There is and was no problem getting NetFlix on the Samsung.

When I first got NetFlix via the Dish Hopper, everything worked fine for a short while.  Then, reception became erratic
finally resulting in the NetFlix immediately shutting down the Dish Hopper.

After weeks of calls between Dish technical support and NetFlix technical support I had a DISH technician finally come
out to review the problem.  After more than two hours of trying to manipulate various ways of getting NetFlix, the following were ruled out:
1) It is not a NetFlix problem
2) It is not a Time Warner Cable problem
3) It is not a Dish problem because the JVC causes the breakdown in the visual transmission

The Dish technician believes that there is some sort of breakdown between the DISH HOPPER and the JVC that prevents the JVC from projecting NetFlix programming. The technician suggested that I contact JVC for technical support.  NOTE:
every time I attempt to click on to the Hopper NetFlix,  the same thing happens.  There is some sort of breakdown in
communication between the Dish and JVC units.  I can hear the JVC sound sort of shutting off when this occurs.

MIKE,  if you are reading this, can you PLEASE suggest anything and/or give me a JVC technical support phone number which I can use?

I don't know what to do at this point.  The technician put a parental control on the Dish Net Flix so that if I inadvertently click on to it, instead of the Dish unit locking up and the JVC's sound disappearing I can still go back to regular Dish programming.

I hope the above makes sense.  (Please note that I have purchased enough HDMI cables to open a cable store!)

Thanks for any response.  (Note: the technician said that there was sound coming from the NetFlix network (although I was not aware of it).  I have the second HDMI output from the DISH to my Anthem Statement surround processor for sound.

Are you having problem sending 4K or 1080P to the projector?

Are you having problem sending 4K or 1080P to the projector?

Mike,
I'm having no problems sending 1080p to the projector via blu-ray or regular DISH NETWORK programming (which, I believe is mostly 1080i..I may be wrong, however).  BUT, when I choose to view something on YOUTUBE via DISH and pull up all 4K programming, at the moment when the program starts there is a written line at the top of the image which should, I believe, show 4k; it does not.  It shows HD.  I don't have any other source for 4k because I waiting for information on the upcoming OPPO 4K products.

So, I don't know if I'm viewing YOUTUBE 4k or viewing via eshift.  The projector certainly does not have it's normal sound coming from it affected when YOUTUBE comes on like the trouble I'm having with NETFLIX where the projector sound when it shuts off then appears to go on.  I say "appears" because I get so frustrated at that point of having to reboot the DISH HOPPER receiver every single time that I'm not paying attention to anything else.

(...sorry for the long response...)

Connect the BD player directly to the JVC and play a movie. If you get image, then I know 100% the problem is not the projector. The projector does not know, nor would it care what the 1080P(i) sourced is from a BD player or a set top box.

...ok, Mike...

I give up...the blu-ray player connected directly to the JVC works fine...

So...Dish/ NetFlix say that it is not a problem from their end...the JVC says it will not accept NETFLIX...

...DISH has spoken to me for what seems a life time (two months?) about then even lied about knowing or not knowing the problem)/ NetFlix has also spoken
to me about this...

...the DISH technician says that, after all his manipulations of testing in my home for over two hours, there
is a breakdown of communication between the JVC and NetFlix...

...SO...what do I do?...cancel NETFLIX and just live without it?  I've depended on that channel for alot of my
viewing and to what end...(and, remember, I get NETFLIX just fine via DISH's Joey unit in my bedroom connected to a 47" tv although it is not 4K).

...No one will diagnose the actual problem and attempt a fix...

...I've never been in such a situation regarding all this in my life.

Now connect just the Hopper directly to the JVC (do not connect Hopper to AVR) and see if you get picture from one of the stations. If that works, then try Netflix, but make sure you are trying 1080P netflix, not 4K.

Added
What do you mean when you say the JVC says it will not accept Netflix? Are you saying a message pops up on the JVC? If so, then it sounds like you are trying to send 4K to the projector? Please advise.

The JVC can accept 4K, but it can be a problem with setup, whereas 1080P should not be a problem at all.

Mike,
The HOPPER has never been connected to the AVR; it has always been HOPPER HDMI out directly to the JVC HDMI1 input. (The second HDMI HOPPER output does go to the AVR for sound.)

As far as the JVC "not accepting NETFLIX, it was the DISH technician who finally arrived at that conclusion. Please
remember that I cannot access NETFLIX at all.  I can access YOUTUBE and watch 1080 programming (and I do have eshift on all the time); however, I when I attempt to watch YOUTUBE 4k programming the top of the program, on initiation, does not say 4K but, rather HD.  Should I be turning off eshift for YOUTUBE and/or NETFLIX?  I'll try that and respond.

(Have I understood your concerns correctly?)

ADDENDUM:  O.K....I've tried YOUTUBE first without the eshift on to see if the 4K program would reflect "4K" at the top of the screen...it does not.

Then, I've tried to put on NETFLIX without the eshift to see if I could get reception.  The NETFLIX logo goes on for a few seconds that disappears from the screen leaving the screen blank.  The projector does it's act with NETFLIX by having it's internal sound go off but, note, the projector does not turn off.  I had to reboot the DISH HOPPER to get regular DISH programming. I am able to turn off the JVC normally with the remote as usual.

That's my story!!  Your a braver man than I to take this all on!
NOTE: I do receive NETFLIX on my computer which is in my home theater (if that matters).

Why aren't you running your Dish Hopper through your AVR ? That's what I do. I don't watch Netflix though. But if this is only happening with 4K from Netflix, I'd say your HDMI cable is probably the culprit.

If I want to view 4K, Mike, the Anthem Statement v2 3D is not a 4K video processor. It processes 1080p.

And, if you can tell me what HDMI cable will definitely work...I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your help.

...well Mike...

I connected the DISH HOPPER as you suggested to the AVR and am able to view NETFLIX...I assume that what comes out of the AVR visually is 1080 and the JVC eshifts the image.

At least I can receive NETFLIX in my home theater at what ever resolution I'm watching (and I have no idea what it is).  I've put on YOUTUBE 4K videos but I guess that what I'm watching is the images manipulated by eshift.

What the Dish technician told you is incorrect. There is no problem with the JVC. It did not make sense that you could not receive 1080P Netfix, when you are able to receive other 1080P content on the JVC. As I said the JVC has no way of knowing what device the content is coming from. I suspect when you connected the Hopper directly to the JVC, the Hopper was trying to send 4K Netflix to the JVC and that is what is causing the problem. It can be hard to find a cable that works for 4K and just because one person bought a specific cable and it worked for them, does not mean it will work for you. Now you can buy certified 4K HDMI cables, but 20' to 25' is probably as long as they come. You can talk to Bluejean cables or if you need a longer cable, you can call us about a Celerity fiber optic cable. People have had sucess with 40', 50' and 60'. Probably could go longer, just don't know of anybody that has needed anything longer that has tried the Celerity.

Thanks for the link Mike, I am happy to see that Monoprice still has cables that can compete with the expensive brands for very reasonable prices.

...would the Bluejeans 25ft cable evaluated in the article allow me to have access to 4K reception if the DISH receiver were to be connected directly to the JVC?

...When I have the DISH receiver HDMI'd to the Anthem Statement then to the JVC, the JVC shows 12Gbs(sp);
...When I have the receiver HDMI'd directly to the JVC, it shows 8Gbs(sp);...

Why is there a difference?

That means the Anthem is processing the signal, not passing it through. Look to see if Deep Color is turned on in the Anthem. If it is, turn it off.

Mike,

That should make it easier. Apparently the Hopper is sending 8 bit, since that is what the JVC reported when connected direct to the hopper. With 4K UHD BD, fed direct to the JVC, you should get 10 bit.

...quick question...(after reconnecting the DISH with the new HDMI cable directly to the JVC) when I watch blu-ray from the Anthem Statement HDMI output, do I set the Anthem at 10 or 12bit?
Title: Re: JVC DLA-R//S500U
Post by: AVSMike on November 17, 2016, 10:57:44 AM
10 bit. What is coming from the Direct TV looks to be 8 bit, since that is what the JVC showed, when connected directly. Setting to 12 bit, most likely is why your cable will not pass the signal. 4K UHD BD uses 10 bit, so no reason to really go above that.
Title: Re: JVC DLA-R//S500U
Post by: ed weinman on November 17, 2016, 12:02:04 PM
Thank you, Mike..strangely enough, the 12bit setting did allow the DISH reception via the Anthem but I noticed a change in the darkness of the NETFLIX programming...I did change the Anthem to 8bit and it looked more as if I had the DISH connected directly to the JVC.  And, yes, previously,  the DISH receiver connected directly to the JVC did show 8bit reception.

...so, when watching blu-ray via the Anthem, I'll set it to 10bits.

...well I connected the new HDMI cable directly from the DISH HOPPER receiver to the JVC HDMI2 input...I finally got 4K from NetFlix but the continuing problem is that I'm able to get NetFlix but not all the time...

Update:  I can get on to NetFlix for a moment but then the screen goes blank and/or I have to reboot the DISH  HOPPER?
NetFlix will allow me on a few occasions to sign in and when I'm just about ready to select a program, the screen indicates that it not available...Is there no end to this?  I was able on two different days to watch one 4K show with the JVC showing 4K, but after shutting down the projector and later trying to get on NetFlix...it was no go...

...now I need to address the YOUTUBE problem of trying to watch 4K programs via the DISH HOPPER receiver but all I get are the shows id'd via the JVC as 1080...but, as Scarlet(sp) so famously said over the years...I'll think about it tomorrow (after all, tomorrow is another day!)...

I've only watched 4K Youtube videos briefly via my Samsung 4K UHD player. It worked, and they played, but they seem to be compressed compared to 4K UHD Blu Rays, that's for sure.

WOW, I can't believe that you have to pay for them to come out and fix a problem that is theirs. When we upgraded from 100Mbps to 250Mbps, and I did the install...our Cable Co. came out 2 times to get it fixed free of charge.

I would complain to their Supervisor, and tell them you are going to post poor reviews about them. Yelp, and Facebook is what I usually tell them...then they come around and help you. In my case they bent over backwards to get me good service..they even credited my account for lost service since I wasn't getting the guaranteed Mbps without complaining.

...well...Time Warner came and went...he increased the modem speed from 100 to 300...and still no NETFLIX via the DISH HOPPER receiver...I'm ready to give up and cancel NETFLIX...the weeks and weeks of calls back and forth between NETFLIX and DISH then involving TIME WARNER has gotten me no results...all afternoon I get "not enough bandwidth" messages from NETFLIX.  The TW Technician said that the speed has been increased to 300 but if I'm still not getting NETFLIX, it would be a problem to discuss with DISH and/or NETFLIX. He also added that my computer only goes to 100 but, per his statements, this has nothing to do with my problem.

I give up.  Sorry for involving all who attempted to help me on this discussion...I appreciate it very much.

DISH tech. supervisor came out yesterday, stayed two hours, replaced the receiver for the second time, NetFlix worked, he left then NetFlix did not work!

A second DISH tech. supervisor is coming out today!  The unit freezes on the NETFLIX logo and I can't remove it, even by rebooting the receiver.

UPDATE:  DISH to come out tomorrow to "rewire." (what ever that means...)

I had a similar thing happen when we upgraded to 250Mbps service...Tech left with us having 260Mbps service and shortly afterwards we had service that varied from 1Mbps to 250Mbps. After a couple of visits and rewiring we found that my Netgear Router was flakey. Hopefully they will get your problem solved soon.

After he left, I was only able to receive 1080 from NetFlix
Wednesday:  I received a few episodes of Suernatural in 4K(!).  Later on during the day,  I could not receive
NetFlix at all...I tried 3 DISH HOPPER rebutes but to no avail.
Thursday:  Every time I attempt to get NetFlix, the same message appears: "Not enough broadband."
This comming Monday, both the Dish tech. supervisor and Time Warner rep. are supposed to come at the same time

Time Warner recently increased the modem speed from 100 to 300;  I've noticed that the ethernet cable going from the modem to the loaned router(sp) blinks red at the modem end (I did try to replace the cable with another but the result was the same).

NetFlix keeps showing not enough bandwidth for the past two days.

Monday should be the show down morning with both DISH and TIME WARNER technicians coming at the same time to
try and work this out.

Mike,
Thanks.  What I don't understand is why there is a breakdown in NETFLIX communicating with the DISH HOPPER receiver.  Sometimes, when the NETFLIX logo disappears from the screen, the JVC tries to make a sound as if it were revving up searching for a signal (only on occasion, though).

Well there has already been one report of an Oppo 203 owner having problems with it working with his JVC. This is a guy that already owns the Samsung and has the Samsung working in his system. He has submitted a report to Oppo.
http://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digital-hi-end-projectors-3-000-usd-msrp/2222586-official-jvc-rs600-rs500-x950r-x750r-x9000-x7000-owners-thread-594.html#post48930905 (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/24-digital-hi-end-projectors-3-000-usd-msrp/2222586-official-jvc-rs600-rs500-x950r-x750r-x9000-x7000-owners-thread-594.html#post48930905) Since the Samsung, Panny and Philps 4K BD players all work with the JVC, I suspect either it is a problem with the Oppo or a problem with settings. We need more users testing to get a more accurate view of the situation. That should happen over the next few days.

...well Mike,  I'm also having trouble with the OPPO:  when turned on the screen is blank...no OPPO icons or anything...but I was able to play a DVD and 4K (the unit upconverts all content, I believe, other than 4K of course, to the 4K level).

Back to my saga of the "Old Man and the DISH Sea", if anyone is at all interested on this ongoing craziness...It turns out that I am the lucky one of two (the other in another state) having the same problem of receiving NETFLIX...DISH has no record of this happening to anyone else (that warms my heart).

This Wednesday, the Dish tech. supervisor and the Manager (of what, I don't know) are both coming out to....to...oh what the hell...If this turns out to be the end point of the story, I'll just have to live without NETFLIX although I've become so addicted to the channel's not having commercials thereby giving each episode in a series a nice flow that I'll miss that most of all.  Yes, I can watch/record shows of the CW channel and fast forward through the commercials but it is not at all the same (and the quality of the image and sound from NETFLIX is much better than the CW).

(Someone up there is not watching out for me.)

One more entry after they leave on Wednesday and I'll stop this outrageous saga.

The Oppo problem is a bug and Oppo should correct this pretty quick. Pop a disc in and hit play and the movie should play. As for Netflix, this is unbelievable that they can't solve your problem.

Mike,
The last go round with the OPPO was that I did put a disc in and there was no picture but there was sound and I did listen to a CD).

As far as NETFLIX/DISH is concerned, what can I say.  I did purchase the Roku4 and HDMI 4k 3x1 Switch for them to also play around with (as the supervisor suggested).  I was told that, if there was a solution not needing the Rodu4 and the HDMI switch, I could always return them (from Amazon.com).

Update: Re: OPPO...today I've had no trouble in getting the OPPO opening screen.  Maybe it needed a break in period?...

Change the output on the Oppo to 4:2:0  10 bit or 12 bit, rather than auto. That will be an easier signal to send.

Did you ever get your Netflix working 100% ?

Did you ever get your Netflix working 100% ?

Craig,

No.  Time Warner tried to get out of having a technician come out this am with testing tools but the woman who called was so illiterate of the issues regarding me situation that I cut her off and demanded that the tech. come with his equipment as previously scheduled.  She was shocked (and so was I by my anger) that she had nothing more to say.  He will be arriving in two hours.  The DISH HOPPER shows an ethernet connection between the HOPPER and the router but no connection between the router and the modem even though I have an ethernet connection attached to the modem.  The DISH HOPPER allows me to see DISH programing but, still, when I attempt to get NETFLIX and YOUTUBE, the message still remains "not enough band space".

The DISH technician is coming out tomorrow.  What he'll do is anyone's guess.

So...there you have it!  The joys of modern conveniences. Why is it so hard for Time Warner and/or DISH to understand that the modem will not speak to the router although the router will speak to the DISH HOPPER receiver.  I also have an ethernet connection between the router and the 4K OPPO player which does show active connection, so that isn't a problem (or is it!).

Craig,
You asked to a simple answer and unfortunately I have none at this time.  After the TW tech. leaves, maybe I'll hopefully have a resolution to this nightmare and give more information.

Thanks for asking.
Ed W

Craig,
I'm only getting started!  Time Warner tech. came and went.  The ethernet cables for my phone and internet were in the wrong modems (I have two: one for the phone and one for the internet) to start with!  We then ran a test for the DISH connections from the modem to the router to the DISH HOPPER and all was well! (The test was run via the DISH menu diagnostics entry). WELL, all is not well.  The NETFLIX logo appears on the screen and remains there!  I cannot do anything but rebut the DISH HOPPER..which I did several times.  The TW tech said that it was something going on via the DISH receiver that is the cause of the problem. DISH tech. is comming out Monday am (was supposed to be tomorrow, Saturday, but a got an email that it was cancelled! I called and raised hell.  They could not tell me why it was cancelled and/or who cancelled it).

If you like this ongoing saga, I'll be glad to continue after the DISH tech. leaves (unless I lock him up in a closet until he finds a solution).

What is so damn frustrating is that DISH has replaced the HOPPER three(3) times already! Maybe it's the termites in the wall that are playing games with the wiring.  DISH has been so unhelpful in their three or four past visits that I don't know what can be accomplished this go round.  If it is something regarding handshakes coming into my home...what can it be?  Why should the HOPPER freeze with the NETFLIX icon on the screen?  Why does this make the remote control inoperable to shut the HOPPER down? Why did the last DISH tech. supervisor tell me to purchase the Roku 4 (which I did only to return it because the HOPPER itself should be giving me NETFLIX).  I'd like to put the following in capitals...but...what the hell is going on!

Maybe I'll throw a party after the nightmare ends and anyone who wants to come, visit me and enjoy some 4K/blu-ray films/concerts via my OPPO is more than welcome.  (I live in Santa Ana CA.)

Everyone have a Merry Christmas and enjoy all your holidays.

DISH tech. came, realized the total problem regarding NETFLIX and especially getting 4K reception.  He spoke with the highest level technicians on the phone while attempting to resolve my problems (I even got to talk to her...what an honor!)  DISH, again, is fully aware of NETFLIX 4K problems and "is working on it" (....hum...I think I've heard that before...)

The end result is that the highest level DISH technical representative  will contact me within the next week with what ever results they have come up with.  CATCHER: If I don't hear from them...I'm supposed to call...(yes...I've heard that before)...BUT, this time if I don't hear from them and I have to call, I will not have to speak to the level one party who answers but, rather, I need to ask to be transferred to...wait for this..."DOCTOR DISH AGENT!"  Where do they come up with these ridiculous nomenclatures.  (All this is supposed to be in the notes that the answering party has upon my call...we'll see).

So...DISH KNOWS the problem...they have told me this before...BUT this time, I have the privilege of speaking to their top agent who, next to God, will wash away all my three months of anguish and tell me all is well.

I still believe the glass is half full, but the glass is getting smaller...

I guess I've run out of options here and have nothing new to relate to you.  I hope I haven't bored you with all this..but, I felt it was, initially, a JVC/DISH connected problem; that's why I started all these entries under JVC projector.

To, all: have a great day and week.

Craig,
...who, me, worry?!...
...well it seems that my misadventures in 4K NETFLIX reception may be coming to an end...
...Time Warner stabilized the minimum download speed of their service to me which now
hovers between the low-mid 70's to the mid 80's...I've run several tests yesterday and, again
this morning (it's 8:25am in sunny/cold Southern California).

I have had no trouble yesterday, after TW did it's thing in getting NETFLIX; however, the for the
rest of the day, all I got was 1080i receiption.  This morning I, again, ran a download test from
TW then put on NETFLIX...and, voila!...4K...I'm not jumping up and down just yet because I
don't know if NETFLIX will fluctuate between 4K and 1080i...I'll wait for a day or two to see if
it stabilizes at 4K.

I'm in correspondence with a Doctor Dish Agent (he is not as scary as his title implies) via several
phone calls and related to his answering device this am how things are.

If this is THE END, I feel, in a way, sad that I can't continue with further chapters/pages of this
saga.  I feel that I've either had a captive audience with all reading this or that I've imposed my
story on all of you!

One question though...the JVC projector makes a rev sound (if I can describe it that way) before
this am's NETFLIX connection and the resultant 4K image...is this normal?...does the JVC make
internal adjustments via these sounds when it changes from, let's say, 1080 to 4K?...

...either way...have a great rest of season holiday/vacation and have fun!

Craig,

Thank you very much for your interest and care.  It's been a very long, frustrating three months of back forth games and I'm hopefully glad it's coming to an end.  (Now I have to find another subject category to involve myself in...otherwise, it feels lonely!...)

...Oh, I forgot...never mind...I don't remember what I forgot to ask!...(That's what age 75 does for you...but, I in no way do I feel 75 (well, maybe at fleeting times) but it was in relation to the JVC...oh, well...I've been accused of acting like a teenager, and, let me tell you...I'm PROUD of it!
