NAD T-777 Receiver no longer turning on
« on: April 02, 2022, 11:39:53 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a 2013 built NAD T-777 and today all of a sudden, it will not stay on.

Initially earlier today, when I press the power button, it turns on for a second and then turns off.

I tried unplugging trying different power outlets but same story.

Now, after several hours of being off, I tried to turn it on and nothing. It will not even turn on for a second..

Is it worth getting it fixed or better to get a replacement?

any ideas?

Sounds like the power supply has gone bad. These days you're better off just buying a new (or lightly used) replacement. The cost of repairs are generally not a wise investment.

I checked NAD website and they list one place here that is authorized for repairs.

I can check and see how much it costs to determine the problem and then how much to actually replace the broken part and labor costs.

It maybe cheaper than getting a new unit..

Getting a new one is an option but it is very expensive option to get something similar to what I have now.

I have 2 subs and 7 speakers so I would need 7.2 system..

I also have 1080p TV.

Would want lots of hdmi ports.

Any recommendations for new one?

Are you handy with a digital multimeter and soldering iron? I bet there's a YouTube video that covers avr power supplies.

So many choices....Denon, Marantz, NAD, Anthem...it would come down to what features you are looking for. From a connection standpoint, you'll be way ahead of a 2013 AVR, that's for sure. I had a NAD amp years ago and liked it, but I'm not sure about their AVR performance these days. It's been a few years since I've auditioned any AVRs, but I'm sure others can chime in like Mike and Chris.

Around here, most electronics repair shops charge a diagnostic fee, around $50, which goes towards the repair if you approve the quote.

If you are looking for a new receiver, 7.2, I recently have had extensive time with the Marantz 7011, the Marantz 8015 and the anthem1140. I will give you more details if you’d like but both my brother and I really like the Marantz and really did not like the anthem. First, the anthem is Designed for surround sound for movies. If you like two channel. Music, cds, sacds, streaming, or FM The anthem unit fails badly. My brother replaced the 7011 in his system with it and I did in mine. We both listen to 2 channel music and couldn’t stand it. The Marantz was so much better. Also the Marantz was so much easier to set up a news. We were both frustrated by the inability to easily switch imputes and equalise.

The anthem, I must admit, gave very good sound for movies. It did sound somewhat better than the Marantz 7011.However, the Marantz 8015 more than equaled in Anthem due to it’s more powerful outputs. Please feel free to ask me any other questions.

My brother traded in his 7011 so I gave him mine and he resold the anthem. I used another anthem for my upstairs system, attached to my LGTV and was dissatisfied. I then got the 8015 unit. I think it’s terrific. Very easy to use and very good sound for both movies and two channel sound.

Thanks Barry for the recommendations.

I will see how much it costs first to fix if possible and then will look at other units for replacement if needed.

Thanks David and Tracy for the assistance.

I left out one important fact. As I mentioned the anthem was built for video not so much audio. While the Marantz has this the anthem does not: an FM radio and streaming capabilities.

Barry, which one has more hdmi ports?

Seems, I have more outside things connecting now to the home theater receiver!

no, it is 2013 and the warranty is only 2 years max so it is way out of support.

I contacted the authorized repair folks and they still support NAD equipment so will take it there and see what happens.

My wife doesn't want me to spend the big $$$ now so will have to band aid what I can now.

I went to the only authorized NAD service center in the entire city which luckily wasn't too far (30 min drive).. I had to pay $199 for the diagnostic check with the price applicable to the total price..

They will let me know once they go thru the details..
