Got my NEO unboxed and installed tonight - it works GREAT! Sends the correct metadata to my JVC projector, it's faster than the old player, picture looks great. Fairly easy to setup compared to the older model. So far so good.

New firmware available now ( today ) -

1. Added recent tool (get last position after playback).
2. Fix for chapters in MKV not working when launching MKV from Zappiti APK.
3. Fix for BD menu video playback sometimes displayed in 1/4 of screen.
4. Auto resolution and auto framerate now supported also for DVD-Video (same as for files / BD).
5. UP/DOWN should work as FF/REW -- implemented for DVD-Video at the moment; for regular files and BD Lite will be implemented in next firmware.
6. Replace the name of the skin "Blur" by "Aurora".

DVD auto resolution now works

Last week I got the Zappiti Reference player, and I love it... picture quality is great and it has DV. I like the silver skin, myself.

I'm almost exclusively watching movies on my NEO at this point. Love it!

Same here...upgraded from a couple hundred dollar Dune HD PRO 4K to this, and it is soooo much better!  Reexperiencing my collection and new 4k movies now.

I use Zappiti’s NAS with the 4K HDR and my wife and I love it. I ended up adding the 2nd Blu-ray drive to speed up backing up my library. Yes, it is pricey, however it is pretty much plug and play. I did look into both K-Scape and Plex and liked the simplicity over Plex and cost over K-Scape.

Sorry if this is a dumb question - but aren’t there legal issues with ripping BDs, especially in a turnkey product, like Zappiti? Isn’t this what got Kaleidescape in legal trouble that caused them to temporarily shut down?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not preaching. As a libertarian, I believe in “live and let live”, which includes paying for goods, services, and content. I stopped pirating software after graduating from HS in ‘91 and sidestepped the Napster mess mid-nineties.

I’m currently subscribing to multiple music and movie streaming services. Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, Prime Video, Netflix, etc. For music it’s great, esp with Amazon high-def streaming. For movies - we are spur of the moment family - let’s sit down to watch something, and pick it now. Hence lots of movie purchases on Amazon Prime Video. And this is why K-scape with their store intrigues me. But I digress…

What I am curious about is how is Zappiti solving the legal problem and not getting ensnared in DMCA and the like. And why aren’t others doing it?

If you own the disc. There is nothing illegal about making a digital copy. As long as you don’t sell it. You are legally allowed to back it up

There's a technicality in there for Blu-rays.  While it's not illegal to copy the movie, it's illegal to break the copy protection on the disc.

That said, I've never heard of a case of a person being prosecuted for it when it's only for their own personal use.

The whole copy protection scheme was silly anyway, as it was broken almost immediately after release.

Not those who sell the ripping drives. As long as it’s not resold I don’t see the problem

We were just discussing Zappiti a couple of weeks ago and now it looks like they are shutting down operations.

Here's the post that started it on AVS, quoting a letter that went out to their dealers:

Zappiti RTD1619DR (Neo, Reference, Signature) Thread | Page 165 | AVS Forum

And a little more information regarding support for owners:

Too bad.  Sounds like it was a nice product between Kaleidescape and the multiple DIY solutions.

There may be a solution coming from Raphael at Zappiti - " we are working hard to propose something that will be at least as good as it was with Zappiti video, I will keep you posted on that, thank you for your support! ".

They may be able to provide an app that works. In the mean time, you can always watch the movies you have on your NAS in offline mode.
