True as far as the extra pixels go adding more light, but you also gain more lumen output when using more zoom. So there is more light to be had with either method. The question remains, how much is the difference and does the anamorphic lens beat it out still. I have an ISCO anamorphic lens here. If I have time I'm going to take some measurements later.

That's why the vertical compression lens wins over both. I'm already zoomed as wide as practical ( you wouldn't want to zoom to the absolute max anyway - I'm just under that ) and then I'm adding the lost light and pixels back in on top of that.

What are you using to scale up the height of the image?
JVC-RS4500 4k projector, Lumagen Pro, ST130 138" scope screen,
Panasonic DMP-UB900 & Plex Media Server
Classe SSP-800, Bryston amplification, Wilson Audio speakers (7.2) + Buttkickers.

I am waiting for the Radiance Pro to arrive today for the correct scaling. The DCR lens requires scaling in both directions for the proper aspect ratio - it needs to use the full 4096 x 2160 chip - although just using the anamorphic mode built into the RS4500 looks surprising good. In fact Guardians of the Galaxy 2 - 4K Blu-ray looked so good that way, I'm already about 95% sold. but I need to see the full monte. Still missing 552,960 pixels and the proper aspect ratio.

All the parts are in place. Thanks to Kris Deering for walking me through the Lumagen Radiance Pro.

Are you using the HDR tone mapping in the Lumagen or will you just use your custom curves for this demo?

So how tricky is it to calibrate using the Radiance Pro?

Kris helped walk me through setting up a user mode with the HDR tone mapping. I then set up a 2nd user mode ( before I forgot how to navigate the menus ) and set up a 2nd one without HDR tone mapping, so I can use my custom gamma curves. So the answer is both. I plan on shooting screen shots over the weekend too.

Lucky for me the HDR tone mapping uses my existing calibration that Chad B did, otherwise I'd be hosed. Although you can certainly calibrate with the Lumagen. I just need it to scale everything to 4096 x 2160 , with one user mode for HDR tone mapping.  Without Kris Deering's help I'd still be reading the instructions though. I think I'll take photos of all the menus  !

Yeah, I was totally overwhelmed when I first got my Lumagen.

Though I still love the Lumagen, I'm back to using custom curves instead of the HDR tone mapping.

Why is that?

Why is that?

Well, I'm not entirely sure because I was bowled over by the Lumagen when I first got it.  Then I added madVR and ripped all my UHDs and over time found I just wasn't impressed as much anymore.  I actually started wondering if my projector was losing contrast or something.    Then a friend came over who had never seen 4k or HDR and wanted to see some comparisons.  He wasn't impressed with 4k and neither was I.   I have 4 different memories for tone mapping and kept switching between them trying to find the setting that would show off the HDR to no avail.

After he left I went bypassed the Lumagen tone mapping (sticking with true HDR mode on the RS4500) and was blown away - just like I used to be.  So I will have to delve deeper into the settings I have but my impression is that color is just too compromised when converting to SDR.

My initial quick comparison is the tone mapping looks muted and a bit cooler - more like a Blu-ray, than the custom gamma curves. But in all fairness, I would think having someone like Chad B calibrate the Lumagen output and tone mapping would help.

Sounds like I'm also in for an interesting time when I get my Lumagen shortly, after reading the recent comments. I don't know if I'm as hyped as I was from previous feedback about Tone Mapping. I'm certainly keen on giving the Lumagen AutoCal a go though to step up on the JVC AutoCal. I don't have Chad B counter part on hand unfortunately. I have been up to now and including playing with the Oppo, as we know now compromised Tone Mapping, pretty happy with my custom curve for HDR.  I am starting to thing the next frontier could be as Craig's starting to prove, the Paladin DCR anamorphic.

It definitely never stops does it lol ;)
