Could you recommend a UHD film we're all likely to have that we should be able to rip and test whether our hardware works?  I already have the infrastructure (software/NAS) and have ripped all my blurays, so maybe time to look at UHD...

I would pick something that you are very familiar with so your eyes can give you the peace of mind that you're not missing out on any quality when watching a rip.

A few things I would mention:

1) To rip a UHD you need to a software 'key'.  For MakeMKV software, there is a file that you need to download and put in your 'data' folder (a folder you specify in the settings).   This file is updated often.   There can be multiple keys for titles - just because there's a key in the file whose title matches yours doesn't guarantee that you can rip it - your physical disc may require a different key, but again as these are found they are added to the list.

2) While I have been doing a lot of comparisons to ensure that ripping is the same as spinning the disc and am fairly satisfied, I did discover something yesterday that bears further investigation.  I ripped my Bladerunner 2049 disc and noticed that the Lumagen's info panel reported a different MaxCLL value.   It was very similar (and didn't affect the Lumagen's processing decision) but my understanding is that this is just meta-data and I can't explain why it would be different.

If it is on your computer, you can click attachments and other options, then select file on your computer. There is also an insert image link. Button right below "B" for bold.

I'll have to play around some then, maybe i have to actually make the post before I can reference the picture in the image tags.  That's what I was trying to do last night, but I couldn't get a link from the post edit page.

Hrm, I couldn't find anything that would get me a link from the attachments section.

What I normally do is upload photos to my imgur.com account and then paste the link directly in my post. You need to click the Insert Image option above the text box when making the post to put the proper syntax around the image url to make it show up as an image otherwise it will just show the URL link, ie the image link ending in .jpg or .png needs to be in between the img and /img brackets.

Yeah, to be clear, I know how to stick the image URL in a post and have it show up (img /img tags), but I don't have an account anywhere to upload to, and I don't post enough pictures to make signing up for one worthwhile.  Plus the benefit of uploading them to the forum is they don't disappear if the other hoster takes them down.

I was just curious because on some other forum software, as soon as you upload/attach the photos, there's a link available (from the edit page) where you can copy a link and stick it in a post.  It seems this forum software requires the attachments to be posted before you can link to them

Back to actual RS4500 talk. I've decided that mode 1 laser dimming is the best option for 4K now. Mode 2 is just too aggressive sometimes, even with 4K. Mode 1 seems to work fairly transparently on everything. Mode 1 is also best on 1080p source material too.

I noticed that mode 2 isn't as good with the latest firmware. 

So do you ever use mode 2 anymore?

I was, but there are a couple of scenes - the " dark place " scene in Get Out ( 4K Blu-ray ) where it is too aggressive by far. Most movies mode 2 was fine, but it just takes one major scene over - dimming to be a problem. However, I spent a bunch of time after that comparing mode 1 to mode 2, and on actual content, mode 1 looks good without the over aggressive side effects. So I've settled on mode 1 for everything.

I have bugged JVC about working on a further revision to the dimming software. One has to assume that anything learned creating improved firmware for the RS4500 can be useful with any future upgraded models anyway.
