I don’t have the 4500 but I have an rs600 with the 820

Firstly the thing is amazing. The tone mapping is OUTSTANDING. I watched fantastic beasts last night and never was able to see the corduroy on credence jacket when he was talking to the other guy (Colin something or other) in the alley

I am using sdr2020 with the hdr enhance to on. And +6 on the slider

Everything else at zero. Just an amazing picture.

I've been very impressed with the 820 tone mapping as well.  As great of a job Chad did with my custom Arve curves, the 820 just has a better ability.

What settings on the UB820 do you use?

Arrow, Craig or Mike.  Have any of you received confirmation form JVC that the RS4500 will be receiving the tone mapping feature via firmware update?

Not clear that they can do this. They were hopeful about adding the 4096 x 2160 scaling internally though. That to me is more important. Not everyone can afford to buy an RS4500 and a Lumagen and a DCR lens !

A Panasonic UB820 is a relatively cheap way to add similar tone mapping capabilities. Other alternatives are MadVR (relatively cheap too) or a Lumagen. All of these options have their Pros and Cons.

I looked into a lumagen but I could see that it would be something else that requires too much of my time tinkering with.

I completely understand. I had a Lumagen a few years back and it was a little cumbersome to navigate but definitely a tinkerer's wet dream. Some people just want a set-it-and-forget-it solution, which is why I think your best bet is to stick to using the Panasonic's built in tone mapping suite. By all accounts so far, it seems to be doing pretty much the exact same thing JVC's built in auto-tone-mapping software is doing. Though I'm sure we'll see some deep dives by a few others to objectively tell us which is better.

I'm using SDR/2020, HDR Optimizer On, White tone control at -8 (helps reduce clipping based on the Sony 4K test pattern).  The luminance slider is at -1.  On the projector, I'm using a bt.1886 calibrated gamma since I don't have a 2.4 calibrated which is what the 820 is outputting here, but I should be close enough.

If it could be done purely with software, I think they would do it, but I think there may be more involved. Hopefully I can find out more in the next few weeks.

Laser owners!  I told myself I would never buy another bulb projector, but the new RS series is pretty tempting.

I know about these benefits of laser:
-Potential lumen ouput (ie VW5000)
-Lumens don't degrade over time as quickly
-Full fade to black is possible

Are there other benefits with regards to image quality?  Some people refer to "image stability" but I'm not entirely sure what they mean.

Another added benefit would be your calibration (should you do one) should hold for the life of the light source with only minor shifts. The full fade to black feature is not solely owned by laser light sources (as there are some bulb and LED units that do it), but yes, in general you'll find FFTB with laser units.

The laser image stability is hard to describe other than saying things like 'calmer' or 'more solid' for example. JVC lamp based pjs seem to have a kind of micro flicker going on, and tend to add image noise to the picture as well (JVCs eshift 5 was designed to reduce it, which I believe it did a little but also softened the image apparently), so when compared to a laser pj (JVC, Sony or even the baby Epson) there does seem to be something 'better' about the image compared to a lamp.

Some also say that the colour is better - but that may be down to the spectrum of light that it produces which may be what the eye picks up on, rather than any calibration benefit as such with respect to D65 or 709 and P3.

Ideally you need to see them in action in direct comparison like in a split screen configuration to see the difference, assuming you notice it. The JVC image noise and microflicker doesn't seem to be noticed by most people in which case the laser stability may not be something that will be of any benefit to you.

I use my projector a lot for computer use and I think I know what you are talking about with micro flicker.  It is particularly noticeable with solid colors because there should be zero flicker with a solid unchanging graphic.

I went and saw the local IMAX on their new laser projector, granted that is an entirely different tech.  Resolution was horrible compared to the previous film projector that they had, but the 100% lack of any flicker was really nice.
