JVC RS500 / 600 Owners

anyone else adjust the contrast depending on which UHD disc they are watching...I mean it literally varies from -13 to +10

what needs to be addressed is the white blooming on some discs...while others are not bright enough

for example...watched Pacific Rim last night -13....watched ghostbusters (2016) and it was +7

You really shouldn't be changing the JVCs Br/Ct setting but rather the Gamma D settings based mostly on the discs being mastered between 1K & 4K nits (most so far which are 1-1.2k nits which is why only a handful look so dark).  Once you calibrate your black & white levels for HDR on the JVC they really shouldn't be touched (but I get all this is a baseline from your personal pref and only you know what looks good w/ your gear).  The only thing I do other than Gamma D manipulation on 4,000 nit mastered movies is to bump up the player settings (~+3 on both but then I still use a Samsung waiting for the Oppo).

Doing it now with the Samsung / Integral combo. The Oppo will hopefully improve the picture.

I think the Oppo will be as good as it gets with today's technology, as far as 4K BD playback goes. Should be able to do away with the HD Fury Integral.

Can someone please post their JVC settings (gamm, color temp,brightness, contrast etc) for when they strip HDR using the HDfury...my buddy is letting my try out his...want a starting point

Those settings should help. 4K Blu rays looks excellent on the RS500 / 600 in my opinion.

Those of you in dark black pits with your RS500/600, what gamma curve are you calibrated to for SDR?

On my prior RS4810, I liked bt1886 as well as 2.27 power law.  I've got Chad B coming out on Thursday to calibrate my RS500.  Given the lower black floor of the RS500, I wonder if bt1886 will look as good.  I realize technically it's the new standard for SDR and rec 709, but a lot of discs including newer have not been mastered to it (so I hear anyway).

So Chad B came out and did a great job.

I rented and watche X-Men Apocalypse (regular BD) today and just jaw dropping.  As good as the contrast/blacks were on my RS4810, the RS500 takes them rather noticeably which happens I suppose with nearly three times of the contrast I am getting now by comparison.  The color gamut is also tighter compared.  He did a bt.1886 gamma curve which looked perfect on this movie.  He also did a 2.22-225 gamma curve that starts around 2 or so and lifts upward.  We did this because I watch a lot of catalog titles and some of those were mastered at various levels and in the 2 range.  However, bt.1886 might just do the trick across the board for me, we'll see.  I'm sensitive to different gammas so it will be a little testing here and there.
