This has certainly been the best projector I've owned so far. It's coming up on almost a year of ownership. Totally trouble free. I do need to measure my current lumens and report back the current number vs new. Feel free to email me for some out of the box settings / tips / 4K settings.

Hey where have I seen that picture before?? Hmmm let me think... ;D
Watched the new Ghostbusters HDR again last night in 16:9 full screen mode now that I know the movie goes into an "Ad-hoc IMAX mode" and seeing those proton lasers & ghosts jump the letterbox is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my theater! This projector even with some of its minor faults/flaws is simply amazing when you consider the price point! 8)

I don't have " Ghostbusters II ", but I am looking forward to picking up " Star Trek Beyond " in 4K in a couple of weeks, when it's released. 4K looks amazing on the RS600 for sure !

You guys are killing a guy that is waiting for the Oppo. :)

agreed...I have the RS400 and it blows my mind nightly :)
p.s. this is Brian Fineberg from avs 8)

I decided to watch it as a Netflix Blu Ray rental before deciding whether to purchase the UHD disc. Letterbox jumping is included in the Blu Ray as well.
But I just couldn't get more than half way through before I called it quits. I see no reason to justify this remake. Won't be purchasing it in UHD.

Oh wow we thought the movie was really fun (we also went into it with low content quality expectations tho), and the ending 30min of HDR GLORY was worth the price alone! :o
Welcome aboard brutha!

When new posts have been added to each thread, a box that says new will show at each thread, as long as you are logged in. Hit that button and it will take you to the new posts. Now if you want to go to the last post, there is an arrow to the far right of the thread. Mouse over it and you will see it says last post. I will ask about a like button.

For those that use the Projector Central Calculator, the lumen output that Projector Central was using has been adjusted to give more accurate numbers for FL.

Found this on 4K.com and found it really interesting to see on one screenshot pic comparing the different media resolution...

As well I found this older but interesting article about HDR vs SDR further strengthening the theory/thought that maxing out the brightness in HDR is not a great thing and that SDR/4K may be the way to go...

Read the article, at least with front projection, most of us have good light controlled rooms. We are not watching TV's in rooms with ambient light, so while we can't go as bright as a TV, we also do not have to, due to our viewing conditions. We still need more brightness though.

I wonder why they dont use some of the movie material comparing HD vs. UHD, instead of using the pic of the front cover and manipulate it.
Its getting a bit tiresome to see how they try to make HD worse than it is, a bit like they like to run HDR on bigger screens, and prefer to calibrate the HD one so it looks worse. Is UHD really so bad they need to do all those tricks to sell it.?
Anyway if his skin is really starting to look as bad/ artificial as the UHD example try to ilustrate, i guess he will have to get some treatment.

Glad to be joining another forum for AV discussion. My RS600 is still going strong after 10 months. I need to run JVC autocal to correct for some droop in gamma. Like some others I'm waiting for the Oppo UHD Blu-ray player to replace my Samsung.

Nothing, just super busy with work :)

So I have read through a good chunk of the 16,000+ posts on AVSforum and hundreds on AVforums and am on the fence as to whether to go for the RS500 or wait till next generation.
I currently have an RS15 shooting from ~18ft onto a 120" Carada BW in a light controlled room, seating at 11 ft and 17 ft. My current bulb is getting old and weak. Everytime I get to that point of buying a new bulb I consider upgrading the projector.
I am literally about to order it tomorrow morning, but I'm a bit concerned regarding all the "optimizing" (or fidgeting??) that seems to be necessary to get this projector up to snuff....It seems part of the problem is this was released obviously prior to any UHD BR players so there has been some hiccough getting everyone in the chain to get along.
On the Plus side, though, this projector is "mature" now and has many of the bugs worked out. Whenever you buy a spanking newly released projector it doesn't have this "benefit",
So as current RS500 owners - if you weren't already - would you jump in now, this late in the season, or try to resist the urge and wait one more year. (Obviously you can wait forever if you play the wait-and-see-what's-released-next-generation game . . . . Just trying to sense where on the "curve" of cutting edge to mature this is!)
Many thanks!!!!

The messing around with projector settings has to do with HDR. I do not see that changing anytime soon, for the projector market. That is because projector setup vary in brightness, due to screen size, projector used, screen gain and throw distance. This means, you can't have one setting that works for all. Also unless your screen was small and had positive gain, then you are not going to have enough brightness to get all the benefit of HDR. We would be happy to discuss this with you. Just give us a call.

Well... All I can say having started with a used RS25 from a buddy yeeears ago, then all versions of this current chassis (RS50,55,56,57, now RS500), would be to...
(especially this late in the year you should be able to get a Great deal on one [i'd go for refurb IMO if Mike has one], and given the high price of laser it could be more than a few years before anything rivals what we have now given the price... this version will absolutely blow your doors off.... even with it's play-n-play modes & no fiddling!) ;)

My guess is that next year's projectors will be an incremental improvement over this years, like every year. With the only true 4K projectors you actually want ( as opposed to those with poor black levels / striped out irises to lower cost ) being between $ 15K and $60K, it will be a few years before true 4K with excellent black levels are " affordable ". So, no reason not to get a current model, as I don't see anything changing at more than the usual glacial pace.

I got mine yesterday but, I'm going to watch it this weekend. :D

So, did anyone watch the new ST UHD BD on the RS-500/600? How'd the PQ?
Yep last night! ;)
It was as good as the other two but the HDR picture seemed just a smidge darker at times (there were a few times in the dark ship & caves I thought I detected some crush but nothing bad). All in all close if not reference but the real treat was the nice use of the popping in HDR and the Atmos track which was outstanding (especially when those bug ships started flying all around the Enterprise during the first attack... as well when the spacecraft crashed!).
Great night of movie watching (A/V Nirvana!). ;D
Good luck tonight... GO Cubs! :-X

I watched " Sicario " last night on my RS600. Good crime thriller, great sound track, and I thought it had a very detailed, clean looking picture. I did not watch it with HDR. Black levels were very good - although over all I thought it looked a little dark. The sunset scene when they head for the drug tunnel was stunning ! I must say the I am very pleased with 4K UHD on the RS600. I wish I could wave a magic wand and turn all my Blu Rays into 4K UHD discs right now ! :)

In a year or two you will be able to do that for many of your BD's, but it will not be a magic wand that you will be waving to do so. It will be your magic credit card on Black Friday and it may heat it up a little bit. :)

I've noticed several comments about HDR causing a dimmer/darker picture and some not even using the HDR, which I thought was one of the more important advantages of the UHD format over resolution. Is this a problem with JVC pj or a UHD player or combination or simply HDR darkens the image regardless of display/player?

Yeah but remember Craig this one was one of the few 4K DI movies out there (not sure I've seen a bad one yet but 2K DI "remastered BDs" to 4K is a bit of a different story... a crapshoot). ;)

Front projectors do not have the light output to do full HDR. Also because HDR is not set up for front projection (can't be due to too many variables), it requires some tinkering with the settings. It will get better, but may never be completely plug and play. Now if everybody's setup had the exact same light (FL) on the screen and it was bright enough, then it could be standardised, but that is not going to happen, due to different size, different aspect ratio, different gain, different projectors and different prefered brightness.

The issue you're referring to is a somewhat complicated one. What it really boils down to is the display and/or player not properly communicating or enabling the proper protocol for display. Initially JVC projectors had this issue because when they first shipped the HDR mode was meant to tone map HDR content to a Dolby Vision gamma curve, which is quite different than an HDR10 gamma curve. The two are setup for two different nit peak brightness levels (10000 vs 1000 nits iirc). JVC fixed this with a firmware update quite a while ago.
Current issues revolve around the player not sending the display proper meta data about the content it's senidng, improper tone mapping or the player not receiving proper EDID information from the display. On top of that HD BDs are currently being mastered differently by each studio so there needs to be tweaks made every time you watch something. Essentially we're in the early days of the HDR standard(s) and it's not one company's fault for things not looking proper. Give it a year or two and I think we'll start to see things a bit more "plug n' play" as the CE industry as a whole figure how to properly master and implement things on the software side.

In general I watch all of my few 4K UHD Blu Rays I have so far without HDR, but with the wide color gamut. Thank you HD Fury Integral ! HDR raises black levels too much for my tastes. I find the wider color gamut, increased resolution and cleaner looking picture ( much less video noise on the 4K movies i have ) to be enough of an upgrade. HDR with it's raising of black levels is to me ( on my RS600 ) a downgrade. YMMV.

Thanks Mike! I just tested this and these codes work great. I have another request please... Can you also ask if they have any discrete IR commands for Masking Off/Custom 1/Custom 2?
These masking controls go hand-in-hand with the Lens Memories and are really needed to automate things. For instance, with my 2.37AR screen I like to zoom out more than normal on 16:9 material. This gives me about a 15% larger image while not cropping off too much of the picture - and is particularly useful for football where all of the action is still framed nicely.
The downside is that this puts light spill above and below the screen. Which is where the masking controls come in nicely. So when I go to my over-zoomed 16:9 view I need that masking on, which is stored in Custom 1. But when I switch to my regular 16:9 or 2.37 zoom (for a 2.40 movie) I need to turn the masking off. The masking has no buttons on the remote and apparently no IR codes listed in the manuals. So while its great to be able to recall more than 2 lens memories using the discrete IR codes, it still means I have to hunt and peck through the menus to adjust the masking.
Can you check with JVC and see if there are unlisted codes that will do this? If not, perhaps they can add it?
Thanks!

I am pretty sure that JVC does not have codes for the masking. At least last time I checked, they did not. I will ask if anything has changed. Since the new RS4500 has the ability to store masking position in a memory, maybe this has been added. I will ask about that also.

That will be handy to deal with those changing aspect ratio movies !!

So, did anyone watch the new ST UHD BD on the RS-500/600? How's the PQ?
Watched it twice on Tuesday. Movie was way under-exposed. So far, there have been 3 movies that were really under-exposed: ST Beyond, Superman vs. Batman and Jupiter Ascending. The first 2 are easy to see what's going on ... still can't figure out Jupiter Ascending. Jupiter Ascending has a lot of dark landscape shots where its nearly impossible to see any dark image detail ... must look great on a 12bit commercial grade monitor. We need multiple Gamma D's/EOTFs to correct under-exposed movies.

Thanks to all for explaining this. I have to decide with new oppo 203 being released shortly whether to hold out with my sony vw95, purchase the RS600 now, or wait until JVC releases , hopefully a 4K RS600 successor next fall. Would roughly a year's time be worth the difference in purchase price and sale price of the RS600, especially if a 4K version is released. Not really questions but just some decision points I'm wrestling with. The Z1, as great as it likely to be is just too far out of budget.

Yup, they work here too, thanks Mike!
And I have the same question about masking.
FWIW, there are codes for masking in the IP/RS232 interface spec, it would be sweet if they had some IR codes for it.

JVC has RS232 codes for masking control, not masking memory settings. Masking is independent for HDMI 1 and HDMI 2, so you could do something there for changing aspect ratio movies. No plans to add masking memory settings to RS400/500/600. As I said before, the RS4500 will have this.

Damn, I was afraid of that. I'll see how it looks in BT2020 SDR. Yeah, BvS I thought was way under-exposed.

I think that is wishful thinking. They aren't going to bring out a 4K projector this year at $35K, and then undercut it next year at $10K. At least that doesn't make any sense to me from a marketing perspective. Maybe in 2 years. But my crystal ball is a bit cloudy.

I would suspect that a good part of the Z1 cost is the laser and top of the line lens. I don't think that the 4K chip in a lamp based unit with respectable quality lens would exceed 20K, and would compete directly with the Sony vw665. I really can't believe that JVC thinks that it is competing in the true 4K pj market with a $35k entry and no other 4K pj for 2 or more years resting on the eshift tech. But then again, fortunately I don't have to put bread on the table by developing new projectors.

If I've learned anything since I've been in home theater, it's that this industry moves slower than a glacier. Look at 4K UHD Blu Rays. A year late at best.

That is how I see it too.
I know a few are convinced at the other site native 4K will be implemented into all of the RS lines for next year with current pricing. lol

JVC looks to be doing 2 year runs on projectors. Does it really make sense for them to come out with a 4K lamp based projector for the RS400, 500 and 600 next year? Besides if JVC did this for the RS600 replacement, it would have to add a significant cost to the projector, adding that huge lens and the 4K chip. It certainly would not be at the same price point. I could see a possibility of that happening, with the RS600 replacement at 15K to 20K MSRP.
-
Kraine has posted that JVC is bringing out new models. I find that hard to believe. My guess is new firmware update. Things that could be improved:
1. Allow iris to close for full fade to black when viewing 4K UHD BD with HDR.
2. Improved 4K UHD BD functionality.
3. Reduce sync time.
4. Gaming mode.

A new JVC 4K lamp based, with same quality as RS600 lens should be able to be priced competitively with Sony's vw665, which is above current RS600, but still much more accessible than the Z1. The Z1, like Sony's vw5000 are state of the art products with pricing accordingly. But Sony has other 4K pj priced within at least something less of lotto winner, it seems reasonable that JVC would want to compete with it's closest rival. I am making a big assumption in that the quest for true 4K/UHD projection with 2K to 4K UHD BR or 4K mastered BR would be a very noticeable and desirable picture improvement over eshift on same material on a largish screen at common seating distances.

I think a laser based RS600 would be a better option. Especially if it gets a gaming mode. That would be a killer RS600 replacement.

If eshift 4K continues to hold resolution comparable to true 4K as (if?) we move towards 4K mastered sources then you are absolutely on the mark, and pricing is competitive of course.

Within the next couple of years, I could see JVC offering a lamp based native 4K entry-level projector using the same lens, or perhaps a modest upgrade from the standard lens, found on the current e-Shift models. That would not really be much different from what Sony has done with their mainstream 4K projectors (i.e., 300, 500 and 600 series) where a much less expensive lens is used as compared to the VW1000, VW1100 and VW5000.

Hopefully JVC won't use a lesser ( cheaper ) lens like Sony did. It will be interesting to see what comes out over the next 4 or 5 years. In the mean time, movies have never looked as good as they do now, on the current models, that's for sure !!
-
On the other forum, there is talk of new models coming out. JVC usually runs on a two year replacement cycle. So those that think JVC is going to bring out completely new units are going to be in for disappointment. This does not mean that JVC can't or will not make a change, just that we are not talking all new units with different specs for lumens and contrast. I know more, but can't say. :)
-
Do you mean you can't talk about the new projectors they are working on or the new updates that could be taking place this year?
-
I'm going to guess JVC will refresh the current RS models similarly to how they went from the RS40 to RS45, etc.
-

If I was in the market for a new projector and considering JVC, I probably would not wait. But I would advise each buyer based on their specific wants and needs, as to what to buy and when to buy it. :)

I would guess they will refresh them next year at Cedia, like the usually do !

Guys on the other forum seem to think or claim to know 'something' is coming sooner.

We don't really know when the RS4500 is really coming - unanticipated delays and unsubstantiated rumors are sort of the norm in home theater it seems. Heck, where are those " 4K " single chip DLP projectors that were supposed to be out by now ?
-
Current ship date is sometime in January for RS4500. This is as of yesterday. :) I sent an email to all of my customers that ordered to let them know.

If by refresh they do something like eshift version 7 or whatever in anything but an entry level pj rather than true 4K, how many times can you reboot an original and make it appreciably better? By only having an uber expensive 4K model and the remainder 'new' models with eshift would be disappointing. Not that eshift is inferior to 4K but considering that Sony now has how many 4K models below their state of the art model could push many towards Sony especially as more UHD Bluray players are released including the much sought after Oppo 203 and more new releases of UHD BR and more UHD streaming even if they are 2K to 4K. The upgraditis itch doesn't have to make sense, and probably more often than not many who purchase new tech is not because their current equipment is broken but rather they want the newest and best that they can afford and another 'new' version of eshift just doesn't feel like an upgrade anymore despite the fact that it most likely will look much better than what is currently owned.

They could be adding a wanted feature. :)

Ok, RS600 has 10 bit depth, P3, hdr10, to that the Z1 adds a laser and a top tier lens. Dolby Vision might be nice someday on projectors and nothing yet on UHD BR wouldn't seem to be high on the wanted feature list. The RS600 really only seems to be lacking the laser/brightness and uber lens, with most other features the same or is there more to be had besides those?

Having high lumens and great native contrast is pretty tough to do. Name one other projector, beside the RS4500 that has both. :)

And that's why it can command its price, I'm sure the as the reviews come in it will stand head and shoulders above the other 4K projectors, which is all well fine for the very well heeled aficionado. But it would seem reasonable that JVC could offer something between the RS600 and Z1 that just adds true 4K to all the other superb capabilities of the RS600 with perhaps a somewhat better lens, if there is one , but not quite at the superiority of the Z1 lens. If Sony were not doing this then there would be no discussion. But for JVC to consider eshift close enough except for the flagship model just seems that JVC doesn't understand the home theater crowd's desire to upgrade like trying grab that brass ring, and a $35 grand pj isn't the upgrade most of us can do. But maybe they feel that if Sony can charge $50 grand, then no one should complain about $35 grand for a pj that may likely outperform the significantly more expensive Sony. C'mon JVC, Sony has thrown down the VW1100 gauntlet, are you getting in the ring or just gonna sit at ringside for another round? You've shown your mettle with the Z1 on the high ground , whats you got for the middle ground?
-
there was an rs600 for sale with 60 hours on it for 4300$!! damn I missed that one! could have sold my rs400 and paid a fraction for a flagship PJ...oh well
-
The post from Kraine makes no sense to me. If it is just about firmware updates to the current line why new model numbers? If it is something more substantial why not wait another 5 months for CEDIA? Inquiring minds want to know!
-
my gut tells me its a firmware update that cant be done to the existing models...gotta boost those sales somehow

Actually CEDIA Expo is 10 months away (not 5) - i.e., Sept. 2017. I do doubt that we will see new models of the JVC lamp based projectors introduced before IFA and CEDIA shows. Of course a new firmware release for the current models could come at any time.
-
I wonder if JVC will do like Tesla did...take the profit from the early adopters, and make a Projector for a much lower price?

He was talking about another 5 months from the time (March/April) Kraine announced that JVC would introduce replacements for the 400/500/600.

No. Compared to their competition, JVC is already offering a lot of bang for the buck.

Yes. Also, Kraine may have misunderstood some information he received from JVC.

I'm sure JVC will have something in that " middle ground " price point - eventually. In the mean time, I watched " Star Trek Beyond " again last night with some friends, and it sure looked amazing !

Oh, go ahead, as if it isn't hard enough holding out til next year's new pjs :)
Maybe once the oppo 203 is released might just be the straw that breaks the camel's back!

I know. I have owned a 4K (VW665) or E-shift projector (RS600) for nearly 3 years and I still do not have a 4K source. Been killing me waiting for the Oppo.

How is 3d performance? Is the ghosting eliminated?

Better stock up on 4K Blu Rays during Black friday week, so you are ready when it does come out !

JVC has very good 3D performance now. I know of a few guys that have kicked their DLP's to the curb, choosing the JVC over DLP for 3D. Ghosting is no longer an issue and the JVC's are brighter than most of the DLP's.

That's great to hear. I love my RS45 but I love 3d and its 3d performance is bad enough I never use it. I knew that going in to it but I'd like my next projector to have great 3d performance.

I have a customer / friend that liked the 3D performance on the RS500 enough to replace his RS4910 with one.

tech question....why does the 3d improve as the unit warms up?
-
Since the current pj locks up the iris to full open when receiving an HDR signal and raising the black level, is this something that anyone expects to be corrected in next years successor to the RS600? Or will projectors just not be able to really do HDR without losing other relevant attributes?
-

Good question, for which I don't have an answer. Other than the HD Fury Integral

I do not expect to get the dynamic iris to work for HDR, with exception of fades to black.

As the projector warms up, so do the liquid crystals in the LCoS panels. The warmer they are the faster the response time they give and as such you see less ghosting.

I originally planned to not use the iris, but it is a pretty good dynamic iris implementation and I am using it. I can't remember which setting, but I believe #2.
-
anyone else adjust the contrast depending on which UHD disc they are watching...I mean it literally varies from -13 to +10
what needs to be addressed is the white blooming on some discs...while others are not bright enough
for example...watched Pacific Rim last night -13....watched ghostbusters (2016) and it was +7
-
I haven't had to, but I have my Panasonic doing the HDR to SDR conversion for me.
-
I use Auto 1. To me, it seems to be a little more aggressive on dark scenes and fades to black.
-
Do you guys prefer the iris fixed or one of the autos (1 or 2)?
Auto 1. It works quite well, with my manual iris set at -7 .
-
Do you guys prefer the iris fixed or one of the autos (1 or 2)?
I usually keep mine on auto 2 for non-HDR sources, but either auto setting seems to work well. Since the auto iris doesn't work with UHD w/HDR signals, leave it set to manual and adjust the setting to close down the iris if you like.

That's why I'm not watching with HDR - making changes that large from movie to movie is a total pain it would seem. Using the Integral to convert HDR to SDR has made 4K pretty much plug n play, which is exactly how I like it. The picture looks outstanding.

You really shouldn't be changing the JVCs Br/Ct setting but rather the Gamma D settings based mostly on the discs being mastered between 1K & 4K nits (most so far which are 1-1.2k nits which is why only a handful look so dark). Once you calibrate your black & white levels for HDR on the JVC they really shouldn't be touched (but I get all this is a baseline from your personal pref and only you know what looks good w/ your gear). The only thing I do other than Gamma D manipulation on 4,000 nit mastered movies is to bump up the player settings (~+3 on both but then I still use a Samsung waiting for the Oppo).
;)
-

Doing it now with the Samsung / Integral combo. The Oppo will hopefully improve the picture.
-
I think the Oppo will be as good as it gets with today's technology, as far as 4K BD playback goes. Should be able to do away with the HD Fury Integral.

Those settings should help. 4K Blu rays looks excellent on the RS500 / 600 in my opinion.

Those of you in dark black pits with your RS500/600, what gamma curve are you calibrated to for SDR?
On my prior RS4810, I liked bt1886 as well as 2.27 power law. I've got Chad B coming out on Thursday to calibrate my RS500. Given the lower black floor of the RS500, I wonder if bt1886 will look as good. I realize technically it's the new standard for SDR and rec 709, but a lot of discs including newer have not been mastered to it (so I hear anyway).

I've got revised settings for the Panasonic UB900 4K player / HD Fury Integral / RS500 - 600 now, if anyone wants them. Current HDR - SDR BT.2020 settings. Send me an email.
-
So Chad B came out and did a great job.
I rented and watche X-Men Apocalypse (regular BD) today and just jaw dropping. As good as the contrast/blacks were on my RS4810, the RS500 takes them rather noticeably which happens I suppose with nearly three times of the contrast I am getting now by comparison. The color gamut is also tighter compared. He did a bt.1886 gamma curve which looked perfect on this movie. He also did a 2.22-225 gamma curve that starts around 2 or so and lifts upward. We did this because I watch a lot of catalog titles and some of those were mastered at various levels and in the 2 range. However, bt.1886 might just do the trick across the board for me, we'll see. I'm sensitive to different gammas so it will be a little testing here and there.
-
I posted this at the other site, but should mention it here.
My initial RS500 developed a stuck pixel (green of all colors) after 7 hours and had a lens shift that was sticky - this was important as I use constant image height and the zoom method. Well, it was learned that JVC made a production run change later in the year to improve the lens shift and Mike was able to track me down such a unit. The exchange couldn't be any more smoother. The replacement unit shifts very nicely and is a very nice sample in general. Very hard to get this kind of support elsewhere and this is not the first time he has helped me out.
-
Are you doing any 4K with or without HDR?

I use lens memory on a regular basis, so I would agree - very important !

Other than beta testing 4K with the Oppo 203, I am using standard Blu-ray on it for regular viewing.
The RS500 even for 1080p seems slightly more crisp compared to my previous RS4810. Did JVC make lens improvements since then?
I'm getting almost three times the native contrast as before and it shows. :) The blacks are so deep.
My RS4810 had some color desaturation errors in some areas...and sometimes this could be seen in content (having come from a Panasonic VT60 plasma prior that had great color accuracy). The RS500 improvement here seems to be evident, as well. The overall color gamut de is only .4 and every error is very, very low.

what I mean...if I want to adjust settings on my display only am I better off waiting for a time where i will use the PJ for a few hours? rather than turn it on...just for adjustments (maybe 15 minutes) then turn it off until later that night?

It's often been speculated that individual lamp strikes do more harm than individual hours on the bulb.

yeah I have always heard that...but figured I would ask here.

My understanding is that lamp strikes turning on the projector put the most wear on the lamp. But, I don't sweat it as much as I used to. Fast mountain driving wears out the tires on my 350Z faster too!

I used to worry about it, but then I think of how few replacement lamps I have actually purchased and realize it is really a non factor for me.

its a great point....by the time i get even remotly close to a new lamp...i upgrade
I had 1200 hours on my panny before buying the jvc....now I have 400 hours on the JVC and it will be a year of ownership come april...sooo I have a ways to go to even reach the panny.....im sure ill be selling and upgrading way before that point

Welcome Javs. Put some pics up of your theater in the finished section. So you can show off those TPL-150H's. :)

I'm already over 1K hours and still going strong (barely any gamma droop I can tell from my last test)! ;)

Are you still in low lamp, or now on high? I doubt I could get much more than 1000 hours out of my current lamp before I'd be unhappy with the lumens, but maybe it will chug along in high lamp for quite a while.

I would say 50/50 or even 60/40 toward High from HDR & 3D since March. My green droop was only one (gain) click up since August (I was at just over 600 at that point when Chad calibrated it again from the 1st round of HDR in March). Real happy with the stability and unless the RS520 is a worthy upgrade w/ some unknown HDR improvement I may just get (my first in 7+ years for a JVC BTW!), a new bulb for when Chad gets back here in March. ;)
-
With a bt1886 gamma on my RS500, I'm seeing that I can tolerate a little more brightness so I might bring Chad back out soon to bump me up from 12-13ftl to 13-14 ftl. When I used to do power law gamma (say around 2.26) on my prior RS4810 I found 13-14 ftL a little too bright in my set-up for my eyes. My room is very black and I've never liked a really bright image even with flat panels, but the bt1886 does change things.
-
Will have the reduced pricing on remaining stock JVC's this evening or in the morning. :)

You wouldn't like hanging out in my theater then. I'd prefer 18 - 20 foot lamberts. I'd love a laser projector that could maintain 18 foot lamberts forever.........................! As it is, with lamp dimming, I'm at 16 fl right now. I toss my lamps at 12 -14 foot lamberts.

It just depends on the type of room as 18-20 ftL could be fine, but my dedicated theater room is really black and dark. But still, even my family room plasma is only calibrated to 30 ftL for night time viewing (white walls and light carpet).
-
My room is pretty dark. I think that when you watch Lawrence of Arabia, the sun in the desert should hurt your eyes like it would in real life. I also think that when they detonate a bomb in a movie, your room should shudder and shake and it should be loud - almost like being there in real life. Movie magic !
-
Even at 13ftL, when a scene goes dark for a brief period of time, then goes bright...it's sort of like "wow" to the eyes as far as that brightness effect and adjustment initially.
I will also say, going with dual 12" subs in my room (which is only slightly bigger than 12' x 10' with 8' ceiling) has made a really nice improvement along with those MartinLogans. 8)

The JVC will be quite a bit brighter in a calibrated state. I measured 1100 lumens in low lamp on my RS600.

If talking calibrated lumens, it is about like comparing a candle to a spot light. The JVC is more than twice as bright in low lamp as the Panny is in high lamp.

Banding?
what would be the cause of some minor banding?
currently I am using the oppo 203 using strip meta with 150 nits on the slider (new beta) and I am getting slight banding on some discs....I have tried 4.2.2, 4.4.4, auto...... force 10-bit force 12-bit, auto...
on arrival its the worst...watched miss peregrin last night and there was minor banding...trying to get rid of it...its really the ONLY issue I have otherwise the SDR picture is outstanding.
TIA

Hi folks, I'm a new RS500 owner courtesy of the closeout sale at AVS - thanks Craig! I'm coming from a Sony HW55ES and have about 9 pairs of 3D glasses (several Samsungs, one Xpand X105-RF and a couple of 3Actives which are my favorite). However, I have a Black Diamond screen which retains polarization, and the JVCs are the only projectors which use a horizontal orientation as opposed to vertical, and causes a significant loss of light with the RS500. I've done a quick setup & 3D test with the RS500 and confirmed that the 3D glasses I have are very dark with the JVC / BD combo, way too dark to be useful. (With my head tilted the picture is great, but...)
I see the JVC PK-AG3 is available but VERY expensive - even the best price from a legit dealer (at AV Science!) is about 3-4x what I've paid for my preferred 3D glasses and 8x what I paid for the Samsungs. However it looks like Xpand made those glasses for JVC as a special version of the X105-RF. So far I've only found a UK site that sells them, though. They're a bit more affordable from there than the JVC version but still on the expensive side.
Anyone have any suggestions on reasonably priced 3D glasses that do the horizontal polarization?

Looks like we may get some B-stock400's, 500's and 600's. :)

The Oppo strip meta data is still a work in progress and there has been some reports of banding with it.

Hey Craig,
I just have a lowly RS400 (:P), and created a Custom Curve using Arve's Software, and following the steps outlined in lovingdvd's "Speed Guide." I watched Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children the other night, and it looked fantastic. I'm very pleased with what I'm seeing now (having been pretty disappointed using Gamma D, even with JVC's tweaks).
I can't objectively compare with what I saw when I (briefly) had the HDFury Integral for SDR/BT2020, as I didn't take the time to do comparative photographs, but it looks pretty darn good to me! Also watched Amazing Spiderman 2, and Angry Birds, and was equally impressed.

That is excellent news ! The development of the custom gamma curves using Arve's software has really made 4k / HDR work in an excellent way on these projectors !

Hi, I have a new RS-620 which I find to be the best projector I've owned, with one exception. The iris seems to be "over active" even with manual adjustment setting the limits to "4 or5" and I've tried "auto 1 and Auto 2". In result I watch everything in "Manual" iris, which is fine but I wonder if I'm not missing out with some of the deeper darks it could provide. Wonder if anyone else is experiencing this "pumping" or if my unit is somehow defective?

We are now offering with every RS500/600 purchase preloaded custom gamma curves. There will be three to chose from, so you can select which works best with your screen. The BT2020 color profile will also be loaded onto the projector. We will also do this for the RS400, but it is a $50 add for the RS400.

I use a Stewart Tek 130 G3 130" screen. I use the low setting on the lamp and -4 on manual iris, using Auto 2. The 'pumping" is still quite noticeable on dark scenes with a face highlighted in foreground. Maybe I'll just have to live with the lower "darker" picture at -8.

If the iris bothers you, then I would turn it off, before choosing to drop brightness that much.

If we're talking Arve's tool, I think a Mac should work fine. It's just python, and python runs on just about anything.

I haven't found the need to refocus over the almost one year I've been using mine. Zoom gets employed regularly, and focus still seems crisp.

I never found the need. That said, it doesn't hurt to run a focus / sharpness test pattern and check it every now and then - if for no other reason than to put your mind at ease.

question

Good question. I found this via Google -
Nits vs Lumens
When comparing Nits to Lumens, in simple terms, 1 Nit represents more light than 1 ANSI lumen. The mathematical difference between Nits and Lumens is complex. However, for the consumer comparing a TV with a video projector, one way put it is 1 Nit is the approximate equivalent of 3.426 ANSI Lumens.
Using that reference point, in order to determine what a specific number of Nits is comparable to a specific number of ANSI lumens, you multiply the number of Nits by 3.426.
If you want to do the reverse (you know the lumens and want to find out its equivalent in Nits), then you would divide the number of Lumens by 3.426.
Here are some examples:
200 Nits is the equivalent of about 685 ANSI Lumens
500 Nits is comparable to about 1,713 ANSI Lumens
730 Nits is comparable to about 2,500 ANSI Lumens
1,000 Nits is comparable to about 3,426 ANSI Lumens
1,500 Nits is comparable to about 5,139 ANSI Lumens
2,000 Nits is comparable to about 6,582 ANSI Lumens
https://www.lifewire.com/understanding-nits-lumens-brightness-4125499
I'm getting around 452 nits ? That's what I come up with. Not sure how accurate this is.

Well that site is way wrong. Nits are a measure of luminance (light emitted/reflected from a source), where as Lumens are a unit of illuminance (light incident to a source). So a nit is a measure similar to a foot-Lambert or candella/meter^2, where as Lumens, well we all know what that is, measure of the amount of light produced by the light source.
So you can't convert Lumens directly to Nits, in the same way you can't convert Lumens directly to ftL, because you need to know the area those lumens are spread over, and the gain of the surface.
So to bmoney's question, if we assume 1600 Lumens, that would be:
1600 Lumens / (118" * 118" / 1.78 / 144) * 0.8 gain
1600 Lumens / 54 sqft * 0.8 gain
23 fL / 3.426 nits/fL ~= 81 nits

He has a 118" wide 2.35 screen.
Stanger, if I have a 115" wide 2.35 screen with 1.1 gain and 1,700 lumens what are the nits? Do you just do the calculation with 2.35 instead of 1.78?
So, if you know the actual lumens is this a correct conversion tool?

You did not give throw distance. If at short end of throw, new lamp and P3 filter in place, then 99 nits. Same situation without P3 filter, 127 nits

Easy way to do this is calculate foot lamberts and use a foot lambert to nit calculator.
http://www.unitconversion.org/luminance/foot-lamberts-to-nits-conversion.html (http://www.unitconversion.org/luminance/foot-lamberts-to-nits-conversion.html)
You will notice that 30FL gives you about 103 nits.

Thanks, Mike. I'll be at about 19ft throw or just under unfortunately. I have viewed with Manni's BT2020NF color space and I still thought it looked great, I couldn't really see a difference without the filter to be honest. The light output went up but, only slightly as well. I guess that's a good thing. It shows with the filter in place it doesn't take away much light.

If you're not using an anamorphic lens you have to use a 1.78:1 are since that's what's projected. So you'd have:
115" * 115"/1.78 = 7429 / 144 = 51.6 sqft.
1700 Lumens / 51.6 sqft ~= 33fL * 1.1 gain = 36.3fL
Which would be about 124 nits.
So, if you know the actual lumens is this a correct conversion tool?
http://www.unitconversion.org/luminance/foot-lamberts-to-nits-conversion.html
Oops! Nevermind, that conversion is Foot lamberts to nits.
Yup, but that's the correct thing to do, you can't convert Lumens to nits because Lumens is light output, not brightness on screen. Brightness on screen depends on the Lumens hitting it, the area, and the gain.

I've had the RS500 for nearly 5 months now. While it throws a terrific image, there are some other issues that have me mulling switching back to a Sony esp with the recent 4K models just announced. (I'd be looking at the VW285ES.)
To wit: A good percentage of my viewing on the big screen is movies in 3D. I have an SI Black Diamond which retains polarization and thus doesn't work with any 3D glasses but the JVC / Xpand models with 180 degree rotation. So I shelled out for the one and only 3D glasses option from Xpand. My wife hates these glasses compared to the lighter and more comfortable glasses we had been using, and I'm getting tired of them too. It's hampering our enjoyment of an otherwise terrific 3D image. It's really grating that JVC decided to not use the industry standard alignment here, but obviously very few of the industry decision makers really care with the near demise of 3D.
There are other minor issues, mainly the delay in HDMI sync any time the signal changes. Wouldn't be something I'd get worked up about on its own but with the 3D glasses issue it adds another straw to the pile.
I've never been tempted to ditch a projector this soon but I'm considering it, which is really disappointing b/c it's overall a fantastic piece of gear.

Actually JVC did it the right way, when viewed from an engineering viewpoint. What JVC did means that you lose less light output for 3D and light output is critical for 3D. It just happens that no other manufacturer goes through the trouble to do this, so it leaves JVC all alone.

Thanks, Mike, that's interesting to know. So as often happens, someone bothers to do it right in the A/V industry but for whatever reason other makers don't go along. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the problem I have that there aren't any better options for the glasses. The more common (if inferior) polarization orientation has some quite nice options - with my previous Sony I tried about 6 different glasses before settling on the Samsung (very inexpensive and light, 20% of the cost of the Xpands which are less than the JVC version) plus a couple from 3Active that I like. Oh, and there are child size glasses that I got which work with the Sony and there aren't any options at all for that.
I'm going to list the RS-500 for sale and see if I can get enough to not cause waves with "da boss" for a swap to the new Sony 285. It's a downgrade in some respects but we enjoy 3D on the big screen and it'll cause less issues there.

so after having the rs400 in my theater for about 2 years...with custom gamma's
i pulled the trigger on the honey of a deal avscience rs600 was having last week.
the difference is astounding! the extra light output and almost 4x the contrast really shows for HDR (again with cutson gamma) no crushed blacks...REALLY can tell the details in dark scenes and black clothing etc. doesnt all blend together
although the rs400 was incredible (and i didnt think it really could get better) the 600 is a notch up and just wow...i mean cliche or not...even the 1080 discs look better....now i have only watched maybe 20 minutes of clips from various movies...but the wow factor is there....even closer than ever to a flat panel display only on 130" screen!
one question may have been discussed....the auto lense door is very loud and whiney...is this normal/? not a big deal since its only on power up and down...just curious
no to read all 16 pages of this thread again...and to rewatch my 100 4k discs lol

The lens door on mine was loud, but I considered it the " sound of power " !
There are a couple of RS600's left at crazy low pricing !!

Does running your projector on high lamp shorten the life of the projector or just the lamp? Was wondering if the increased fan speed and heat produced would have a detrimental effect.
My RS500 is 2 years old and looks like I will be keeping it for a number of years. I put 2000+ hours on it a year and often run on high lamp with my big screen and don't want to shorten the projector life.
Thanks for any help.

Mainly the lamp, but it has to have some effect on the projector, since heat is not good for electronics. Also if you are using lens memory and use it a lot, you are using mechanical parts, which would have to wear out over time. Though lens memory seems to be pretty well proven to last, since it was first installed on the RS45, I believe. The RS45 first started shipping in December 2011, so has been in use for six years and we read about very few issues with it.

Thanks Mike. I live 4 months up North in the summer and have a smaller screen there. Maybe will get a new lamp and only use that one here and the old one up North to minimize high lamp.
No problem on the lens memory, don't use it.

Anybody that has an Oppo 203, needs to check out the tone mapping on the new betta firmware. It is so good, that I would forget all about custom curves. :)

Seconded

Is the new tone mapping done normally in a subjective preferential way or are you guys measuring while making changes looking to achieve something specific? I'm still breaking in the RS520 I'm writing a review for and noticed it's out of the box HDR10 settings need a little help with shadow detail. I haven't measured yet, but I'd say this unit isn't tracking quite as well to the SMPTE 2084 standard as the RS420, but I'll wait to make such claims until after I measure. I'm sure the Oppo would help here tremendously. Though, I'm still waiting on a more flexible tone mapping solution from madVR. Right now it's tone mapping is more about converting to SDR for non HDR displays so I'll have to rely on custom curves and the internal menu settings for tweaks.

No, the Oppo allows you four selections, depending on what you want to emphasize.

My RS500 isn't even a year old an continue to sporadically have problems with the projector not initializing on startup and getting the warning light. Every time I power down, take off the back and reseat the lamp and it fires up the next time. Is this the sign that the lamp has an issue or is it something in the projector? It's really driving me nuts and I'm afraid one day the lamp reseat trick won't work. I'd just rather that not happen after the warranty is up!

You might call JVC customer service and run this by them. If something is wrong, better to get it fixed ASAP.
