Actually JVC did it the right way, when viewed from an engineering viewpoint. What JVC did means that you lose less light output for 3D and light output is critical for 3D. It just happens that no other manufacturer goes through the trouble to do this, so it leaves JVC all alone.

Thanks, Mike, that's interesting to know. So as often happens, someone bothers to do it right in the A/V industry but for whatever reason other makers don't go along. Unfortunately, it doesn't solve the problem I have that there aren't any better options for the glasses. The more common (if inferior) polarization orientation has some quite nice options - with my previous Sony I tried about 6 different glasses before settling on the Samsung (very inexpensive and light, 20% of the cost of the Xpands which are less than the JVC version) plus a couple from 3Active that I like. Oh, and there are child size glasses that I got which work with the Sony and there aren't any options at all for that.

I'm going to list the RS-500 for sale and see if I can get enough to not cause waves with "da boss" for a swap to the new Sony 285. It's a downgrade in some respects but we enjoy 3D on the big screen and it'll cause less issues there.

so after having the rs400 in my theater for about 2 years...with custom gamma's

i pulled the trigger on the honey of a deal avscience rs600 was having last week.


the difference is astounding! the extra light output and almost 4x the contrast really shows for HDR (again with cutson gamma) no crushed blacks...REALLY can tell the details in dark scenes and black clothing etc.  doesnt all blend together

although the rs400 was incredible (and i didnt think it really could get better) the 600 is a notch up and just wow...i mean cliche or not...even the 1080 discs look better....now i have only watched maybe 20 minutes of clips from various movies...but the wow factor is there....even closer than ever to a flat panel display only on 130" screen!

one question may have been discussed....the auto lense door is very loud and whiney...is this normal/?  not a big deal since its only on power up and down...just curious

no to read all 16 pages of this thread again...and to rewatch my 100 4k discs lol

The lens door on mine was loud, but I considered it the " sound of power " !

There are a couple of RS600's left at crazy low pricing !!

Does running your projector on high lamp shorten the life of the projector or just the lamp? Was wondering if the increased fan speed and heat produced would have a detrimental effect.
My RS500 is 2 years old and looks like I will be keeping it for a number of years. I put 2000+ hours on it a year and often run on high lamp with my big screen and don't want to shorten the projector life.

Mainly the lamp, but it has to have some effect on the projector, since heat is not good for electronics. Also if you are using lens memory and use it a lot, you are using mechanical parts, which would have to wear out over time. Though lens memory seems to be pretty well proven to last, since it was first installed on the RS45, I believe. The RS45 first started shipping in December 2011, so has been in use for six years and we read about very few issues with it.

Thanks Mike. I live 4 months up North in the summer and have a smaller screen there. Maybe will get a new lamp and only use that one here and the old one up North to minimize high lamp.

No problem on the lens memory, don't use it.

Anybody that has an Oppo 203, needs to check out the tone mapping on the new betta firmware. It is so good, that I would forget all about custom curves.

Is the new tone mapping done normally in a subjective preferential way or are you guys measuring while making changes looking to achieve something specific? I'm still breaking in the RS520 I'm writing a review for and noticed it's out of the box HDR10 settings need a little help with shadow detail. I haven't measured yet, but I'd say this unit isn't tracking quite as well to the SMPTE 2084 standard as the RS420, but I'll wait to make such claims until after I measure. I'm sure the Oppo would help here tremendously. Though, I'm still waiting on a more flexible tone mapping solution from madVR. Right now it's tone mapping is more about converting to SDR for non HDR displays so I'll have to rely on custom curves and the internal menu settings for tweaks.

No, the Oppo allows you four selections, depending on what you want to emphasize.

Every time I power down, take off the back and reseat the lamp and it fires up the next time. Is this the sign that the lamp has an issue or is it something in the projector? It's really driving me nuts and I'm afraid one day the lamp reseat trick won't work. I'd just rather that not happen after the warranty is up!

You might call JVC customer service and run this by them. If something is wrong, better to get it fixed ASAP.
