HD Fury Integral
« on: November 09, 2016, 02:58:02 PM »
I'm posting this here since this little device has been a blessing with 4K and my Samsung 4K UHD Blu Ray player. Anyone else using one ? Not only is it useful for " stripping HDR out for better black levels with my JVC RS600, it's been a great HDMI splitter and HDMI " doctor " too. I have both my VW600 and RS600 connected to it ( after my Denon X7200WA ) and it works perfectly. Love the free iphone control app too !!

Would this be useful for a 1080P setup currently using a Darbee Darblet?

As a splitter, perhaps, since it seems to be the best splitter I've had yet. What do you want / need it to do in particular ?

I believe your pj's are not HDR. Besides better black level by stripping the HDR, are there other benefits you are seeing with a 4K player? I have a Sony 300ES (not HDR), and when trying the Panasonic UB900, I found no real improvement in the image. In fact, by removing my Darbee from the chain, I found the image not as crisp. If the Fury would noticeably improve the 4K players picture, then I'm in.

I was asking because of the statement that it increased the black levels.

For your use case, you may want to instead consider the newer HD Fury Linker ...

I am on the pre-order list for the Oppo 203 and have the Denon 4300 AVR with a strong urge to upgrade my Panny FP to the JVC RS400. Will I need this device? Right now, I am trying to identify what I will need in addition to the JVC. I know I need a new HDMI cable and the Spyder 5 Elite for the auto cal...anything else?

Thanks!

I don't have the Panasonic player myself, so I'm not sure of the differences with the Samsung. But I don't believe the VW300ES can do Wide Color Gamut or HDR, just as my VW600 can't. The JVC can do both. I just think it looks better without HDR on the JVC, as the black levels are compromised by HDR in my opinion. I have found that 4K UHD looks a little cleaner / more detailed on the VW600 than the same movie on Blu Ray. There is a bigger difference on the JVC thanks to the DCI color filter and WCG.

I was asking because of the statement that it increased the black levels.

It only " increases " ( poor choice of words ) black levels on the JVC, since HDR forces the iris open, disables auto iris, and changes the lamp setting to high lamp.

What benefits would there be since my PJ is not HDR or have WCG?

For me the Integral has and/or does act:

As a 4K input switch.

As a 4K output splitter.
- Currently I use the second HDMI output as input to an HDFury Linker which I use to scale 4k to 1080p for a second non-4k display.

As an HDMI repeater.
- I believe it outputs a more robust signal than the Samsung K8500 UHD player seems to.

As an EDID manager.
- Present a 4K60 4:2:0 EDID as the maximum supported format so that the Samsung K8500 outputs 4K60 4:2:0 instead of 4K60 4:4:4 for the Home Screen menu screen.  This reduces the bandwidth from 18Gbps to put less stress on longer HDMI cables.

- Present an EDID that reports that HDR is not supported, but BT.2020 is supported.   This results in the Samsung UHD player outputting 4K24 4:4:4 10-bit SDR BT.2020.   This allows me to watch UHD discs with the benefits of BT.2020 but without HDR raising the black levels that my JVC RS500 is capable of.  The raised black levels are a result of the JVC disabling its dynamic iris when it sees HDR input so the iris does not close down during dark and fade to black scenes.   The mobile GUI app for the Integral then allows me to swap between an HDR BT.2020 EDID and an SDR BT.2020 EDID so that I can decide whether I want HDR or not based on the UHD disc I am playing.

The Integral does not have capability to scale.    The Linker can scale 4k to 1080p but does not have two HDMI outputs so it cannot be used as a splitter.   Depending upon use case scenario, you might need one or both.

Note that HDFury is working on a new device that will encompass everything the Integral and Linker can do and perhaps more.  But it is not scheduled for release until the end of 2017 I believe.
