The Sony Betamax SL-7200 sparked the home video revolution in 1976.  This was the first standalone VCR that came with a built-in tuner. Despite its superior picture quality, Betamax eventually lost the "format war" to VHS due to VHS’s longer recording times and broader licensing. Sony officially ceased production of Betamax recorders in 2002.

My Mom bought a Betamax in the early 1980s (and to this day I'm not sure she could afford it at that time). We used to rent movies every weekend from the lone local video store that was all the way across town. Great memories!
