Luma Video Processor in Development

There's a new potential player in the video processing market from a member on the AVS forum called Luma.  It would be a budget-friendly option that will not offer as many features as a Lumagen or MadVR, but with an estimated price at well below $1K, it could be a serious contender to get some good enhancements at a fraction of the cost of the other two.

It's drawn the attention of a number of folks, including Kris Deering and our own DLCPhoto and Mike Garrett.  It could offer some much-needed competition in the VP marketplace and spur upgrades and price adjustments if it's able to deliver what's promised.

It also went off topic for a bit discussing the merits (or lack thereof) variable aspect ratio movies.  (Some of us have strong feelings.)

Yeah, this one of the more exciting things to come along on the input side of things that we've seen for a long time.  Incredible effort if he pulls it off.

MadVR and Lumagen will still have the top end of the market, like the way Trinnov and Storm have the high end of the pre/pro arena.  This would be an affordable option for those of us in that aren't quite in that top end bracket.  If he can get it 80% of the way there, it would be a remarkable product.

I'd just like the ability to import a LUT from Calman for better color accuracy, maybe improved DTM (JVC does pretty well here, but I'm one generation behind and the new DTM is supposedly better), and auto Aspect detection. If those three things are available, I'll be an extremely happy camper.

Yes, I had been considering buying a used Lumagen when the new 8K models hit this year and current owners upgrade, but that plan is on pause for now.
