Universal Remote that uses IR AND RF????
« on: February 05, 2024, 08:39:24 AM »
Currently use a harmony one with Hub and it works perfectly and i love it.

now the problem...they switched the software for logging in to be able to change ANYTHING on the remote.  so my old login doesn't work anymore and its linked to an email that i no longer have access to so I am SOL if i want to make ANY changes. so Im looking ahead to alternatives without breaking the bank...

any suggestions...and im not really interested in a control4 since it is installer based

thanks!

Re the email - I assume you need to reset your password, because that's the only reason you would actually need to access the email account.

I've been using Harmony remotes for a long time now and at some time there is going to be a breaking point, and I'm going to be forced to figure out a solution. Not sure what is out there, like you I'm not at all interested in the vendor programmed stuff. I make minor adjustments with Harmony at least a couple of times a year, and more if a new piece of gear is in the mix.

yup.  i cant access the email to resset the password.

customer support wasnt able to help.  they said the signin info is linked to old software that isnt compatible any longer....so basically SOL. ugh knew this would happen with a web based setup system and harmony being defunct

I mean i have gotten 8 years out of this remote, but still not happy i cant make any changes now.  lets hope my current gear doenst have to change anytime soon, Im also ok if i have to use my phone as the remote...not ideal but can be a band aid

I use URC remotes, but unless you're grandfathered into their system, it's 100% installer based now. Not many options out there anymore, that's for sure.

I totally understand, as a DIY guy myself. But it is an incredibly powerful system, which I'm really enjoying. It makes my somewhat complex theater so much easier to operate.

You would need to work through a Dealer to get it set up, but afterwards, you can use "Composer Home Edition" which does give DIY guys the ability to customize pretty much all of the programming, to make it operate the way you would want it to.

You might still not be interested, but people are often not aware of Composer HE, which gives you a fair amount of control without needing the Dealer.

FWIW.

FWIW I rolled the dice on the Allonis Smart Remote Kickstarter.  It's still pretty rough (learning curve mainly) but I still think it's got a lot of promise:
https://allonis.com/products/smartremote/smartremote-intro

It's actually more IP based than RF, though it supports the GlobalCache for IR.  I've been using URC my remotes are starting to get a little long in the tooth and almost all my devices support IP control.  The big selling point for me is that the Allonis system is all self hosted and they fully support DIY users (they offer paid support too).
