Event Horizon - 25th Anniversary Edition (UHD Blu-ray) review

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: August 9, 2022
Rating: R
Film: 2.5/5

Plot
In the year 2040, the pioneering research vessel Event Horizon vanished without a trace. Now, seven years later, it suddenly appears in orbit around Neptune and the United States Aerospace Command sends out a rescue crew headed by Captain Miller (Lawrence Fishburne) to salvage the vessel. Where has the ship been all this time and what happened to its crew?

My Thoughts
I'm not a fan of horror films, but the science fiction element of Event Horizon appeals to me and the first two acts unravel the mystery of the ship. The character development was particularly strong but the third act turns into a slasher flick with gratuitous violence and gore leaving a bad taste.

The video encode is strong with solid black levels and revealing shadow detail. The print is in excellent condition and the color saturation is on the muted side befitting the mood of the production. For a movie that wasn’t a blockbuster when it was released, it looks like some TLC has been given to the 4K release.

<p>The Dolby TrueHD 5.1 soundtrack is dynamic and powerful, especially in the bass department. Dialog is generally intelligible, but a tad harsh at times with the timbre of the voices not matching the environment. The soundstage is active, especially the rear speakers, which provide ample ambience and the occasional discrete effect.

Video 8.5/10

Audio 8.5/10 (Dolby True HD)

Special Features:
  • Commentary
  • The Making of Event Horizon (5-parts)
  • The Point of No Return
  • Deleted / Extended Scenes
  • The Unseen Even Horizon
  • Theatrical Trailer
  • Video Trailer
  • Digital Code

Conclusion
Although the first two acts had me on the edge of my seat, the third act takes a turn for the worst and throws out the suspense element for gore. If you’re a fan of the horror genre, I'm sure you'll like it more than I did. It had been nearly 15 years since I last viewed this and I had forgotten the ending—now I know why. Recommended for fans.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen this - maybe I forgot it for the same reasons. I'll stick with the film " Sunshine ".

Ditto, saw this long ago and despite liking SF and the presence of Sam Neill & Lawrence Fishburne, I'm not a horror/slasher fan I'll pass on an update.
