This has been finished for a couple weeks. But this is the kids area now. This view is from where the screen used to be in my og theater. You can now see the “behind the screen wall” on the right and the door to the theater just to the right of that

Love the new basement.

so a friend of mine is gracious enough to build me a starter NAS (i will have to just upgrade the discs to larger discs to hold my movie collection)

he is pre installing the current small 2TB discs with about 50 movies I own on 4K....and EMBY to run the movies off the ATV 4K.

Im very excited about this.  will be nice to be able to scroll through and browse what movies i have without putting a disc in (i still have to load BEQ's but thats not a huge deal and not a necessity.)

any recommendations on HDD?

The standard drives used in NAS are the Western Digital Red series or Seagate Iron Wolf. Both are tweaked expressly for NAS use.  Just figure out how much storage you need and get the right size - depending on how your NAS is setup you will be able to use around 1/2 to 2/3 of that space so calculate accordingly. Your friend should be able to tell you that ratio.

Thanks @jkasanic helped me out with this! That’s my “friend” forgot he was on this forum hahah.

are the WD Red worth the premium cost?

Do you mean the Red "Pro" drives? For reference here's what I see for 6TB drives right now on Amazon:

WD Red: $125
Seagate Iron Wolf: $147
WD Red Pro: $179

The Red Pro has a higher RPM (7200 vs 5400) and other high capacity performance type stuff (like supposedly being designed for a NAS with up to 24 bays) which almost certainly won't matter. It also has a 5 year vs 3 year warranty.

If you mean Red vs other options like WD Blue or Green, I wouldn't. Stick with the NAS designed drives for a NAS - it's a different environment with potentially more heat in a small space compared to say a desktop drive. The only other WD I would possibly consider is a Purple, which is designed for surveillance/DVR use case where it's constantly going - but it's more expensive than the Red as a result.

Thanks!  We are also looking at buying external drives  as shucking them.
I want larger drives as I have a ton of movie.

we get it.  you dont want a NAS.  there are PLENTY of people that do and love it.  including me :)

have fun sifting through your disc, loading and unloading the disc wait for it to boot, wait for th menu, wait for the warnings, wait for the trailers.  then realize you don't feel like watching the movie.  you get up stare at you storage rack rinse and repeat. I dont miss that in the least!

I never have to watch trailers. I hit play on the disc and it goes direct to the movie. If I want, don't get out of the chair convenience, I can watch my movies on Vudu. A NAS is nice, but I do not want to rip movies. Did that already, years ago.
