4/5
Plot
Directed by Clint Eastwood and based on true events, “
Richard Jewell
” tells the story of the security guard who discovers a bomb at the 1996 Atlanta Games and takes swift, heroic action, saving countless lives. But in a turn of events, he becomes the FBI’s number one suspect, vilified by the press and public alike. Featuring an all-star ensemble cast, including Sam Rockwell, Kathy Bates, Jon Hamm, Olivia Wilde and Paul Walter Houser.
My Thoughts
This is the type of film that will make your blood boil. The medias obsession with “breaking a story” gets in the way of the facts and in turn, ruins a man’s life. Anonymous sources have become such a part of the media narrative, they are getting to the point of not being trustworthy. Frankly, if the media was smart, they would still use them with one caveat, if the information provided turned out to be false or unverifiable, the sources name would be published—I bet that would cut down on these sources feeding the media false narratives!
Regardless, as a film this is extremely well crafted. The acting is top notch, the sets fit the time period perfectly, and the cinematography goes out of its way to place you into the moment. I’m shocked Paul Walter Houser didn’t get an Oscar nod for his portrayal of Jewell—he personifies the man perfectly from his look, walk, and mannerisms. Granted, he had a lot of media coverage to work with, but he did a great job, nonetheless.
For those unfamiliar with the story, they get most of the facts correct, although the Atlantic Journal Constitution took exception to how their former reporter was depicted in the film, but this isn’t the first time Hollywood spices up a true story to keep the audience interested. No matter how she gained the information on Jewell, the fact is she convicted a man in the court of public opinion and unfortunately for her, Karma is a fickle bitch and she died of a prescription drug overdose a few years later.

Conclusion
Eastwood is definitely in the twilight of his career and at nearly 90 years old, he can be extremely proud of this film. It depicts the story of a hero that has his life ruined by the media mob and corrupt FBI. Sadly, neither entities learned their lesson from this fiasco and continue to repeat their mistakes nearly 25 years later. Definitely check this film out, you won’t regret it.

Thanks for the review. I loved The Mule and I have this on my radar to add to my collection. Eastwood has made some great films over the years. American Sniper is another favorite of mine.

Finally got around to watching this movie over this weekend, and your review is spot-on. Houser's performance was excellent, portraying Jewel as both flawed and sympathetic.
The cinematography is fantastic, and really pulls you into that time period.
For anyone that hasn't seen this yet, it's definitely a recommended watch, and it may be even more relevant today than when it was released.
My only disappointment was that the extras were a little skimpy on the historical details of the story. It would have been a nice touch to feature more of the actual news coverage that covered the story at the time along with the later updates, along with some actual footage of Jewell himself.
