New 2017 JVC Models "Refresh" (RS420/520/620; X570/770/970)

I still am guessing that true 4K at current prices won't happen before 2020.

Well, if the trend with TV's is any indication, I'd hope it might be a year or two sooner. Feels like yesterday people were saying 4K TV's were too expensive and not worth the upgrade. Good luck even finding a 1080p set worth buying in the mainstream size of 50-65".

Despite what the marketing folks say, projector improvements year to year / model to model, tend to be incremental, rather than revolutionary. The current JVC's were a pretty big step up from the previous models though, in my opinion. But I've talked to several people in the last few weeks that are just getting around to upgrading from RS1's, so waiting awhile will certainly get you a more significant upgrade. I still am guessing that true 4K at current prices won't happen before 2020.

It's almost comical at the other site at how confident a couple of people are that JVC is releasing native 4k and laser at current RS prices for next year. :)

Remember, home theater front projection is a niche and quality glass (lens) is not cheap and not something that flat panels have to contend with.  Also, remember how long 1080p projectors took to come out - and then come down to reasonable prices where as 1080p TVs were nicely priced.

I'll be keeping an eye out.  Need to see what pricing is announced at, what "street" $ it translates to, and if the Epson (for the $) still might be my best bet.  I'm very interested, as for performance of all types, it's on the top of my list now!

Low lag gaming mode will open these up to a whole new group of customers. The JVC's will be very tough competition for the other manufacturers.

Agreed and I would think it really puts more pressure on Sony and Epson in particular to make more improvements.

Well they had better get cracking - 4K Blu Ray's with my new Panasonic 4K player look stupendous on the RS600.

Developed by NHK and BBC, I think the only HLG content available now is with the BBC iPlayer.  Perhaps US broadcasters will use it someday.
NTT Japan is broadcasting HEVC-HLG.   But I found Google references that YouTube HDR content can be encoded as either VP9-PQ or VP9-HLG.   So HLG is more than just a broadcast technology.  In that case is there any chance that these JVC models might support YouTube HDR?

JVC has released information on the new models.

RS420: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL102473
RS520: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL102474
RS620: http://pro.jvc.com/prof/attributes/features.jsp?model_id=MDL102475

As has been reported earlier, the big news is the low lag gaming mode. Now the JVC will be an excellent choice for an all around use projector. Now you can have your cake and eat it too, when it comes to gaming, 3D and movies. :)

RS420/520/620 models – Questions asked at CES today -

1.  How much lag in gaming mode? 2 frames  ( under 40ms )

Does it work in 4k/60p. Yes.

And is the contrast compromised while using low lag mode ? No.

2.  What features are disabled in gaming mode? Nothing major other than keystone.

3.  What improvements were made for HDR. Auto HDR pre set. When HDR is detected, it will go to this pre set user mode.

4.  Was there any improvement to HDMI sync / switching  time? A small improvement – maybe 2 seconds.

5.  Confirm that auto iris is not active in HDR mode? Not active with HDR – no change.

7. It would be great to find out which meters are supported by the new autocal software.
More to follow on this.

Shipping at the end of Jan. 2017. And while the contrast and brightness spec's appear to have been improved, they are no different than the current models. The current models have been exceeding the published specifications for quite a while. You could easily get an RS600 that puts out 2000 lumens.
