I use my projector a lot for computer use and I think I know what you are talking about with micro flicker.  It is particularly noticeable with solid colors because there should be zero flicker with a solid unchanging graphic.

I went and saw the local IMAX on their new laser projector, granted that is an entirely different tech.  Resolution was horrible compared to the previous film projector that they had, but the 100% lack of any flicker was really nice.

The flicker that some notice on JVC units doesn't stem from the light source but rather the DiLA panels themselves. But then there is a different type of flicker related to bulbs themselveslf that any/all bulbs can have no matter the projector. This is related to arcing and can be fixed by putting the bulb in high lamp mode for a while.  The former type of flicker that most of the members are referring to (and i think you as well) will have to be examined on these new units as these are completely new DiLA panels. Again, its not light source related. Someone who saw these new units at CEDIA said he specifically looked for this issue (he was especially susceptible to it on the eshift models) and said he didnt really see it on the new units. So it seems like some promising strides have been made at reduce this problem.

So I am getting used to the Panny 820 with my RS4500.  Just want to verify that I have it set up properly.

I have only watched Jurassic Park Falling Kingdom and Sicario 2 using it's SDR 2020 conversion and tone mapping, but those titles looked unbelievable.  Now I need to A/B without the SDR flag being sent to the projector and see what kind of differences i see, but I can clearly see more highlights using the SDR 2020 conversion and tone mapping.  The overall picture seems brighter in general, but I want to see if I notice any lack of color saturation.  I feel as though I am seeing more shadow detail now than I ever have before.
Chad B is coming out on the 28th so I am looking forward to him getting his hands on it and see what he can dial up.

What have you been using  / watching with ? I'm still watching HDR using Chad's Arve Tool custom HDR curve. Looks outstanding to me. Enough so that I have very little motivation to try something else !

Before the 820 I was just using the Panny 900 and suggestions for settings way back when from Kris Deering.

Had more time w/ my UB820 RS4500 combo and I am really ecstatic with the results.  We watched Skyscraper over the weekend and prior to I realized I had my settings wrong by not using the bt2020 color profile for SDR 2020 conversion.  The film was really amazing with excellent highlight and shadow detail present.

However last night I updated the player to it's current 1.47 firmware and tried to utilize the SDR conversion w/ streaming netflix and amazon prime.  Started to watch the Netflix series Lost in Space and was totally floored at the image I saw on my screen. I was also happy to see that Dolby Atmos was passing through to my Marantz pre/pro.  It was some of the best images I have seen on my screen to date w/ my RS4500! The compression algorithms that have been developed by these streaming services is truly amazing.

Yes.  I can confirm that w/ Netflix it can also strip the HDR flag and therefore utilize the SDR 2020 conversion.

I was stuck on watching Lost in Space that I didn't even get the chance to see if that too is possible on Amazon

As good as Chad's Arve curves are (I've used several he did for me) and he is a master with the tool, but the Panasonic 820 takes HDR/tone mapping up a notch.  What I see on my RS440 is just a more natural rendering of HDR on the disc.  More natural looking specular highlights (less clipping) and less occasional "hotness" or over-brightness I would see with the Arve curves at times.  I even learned how to use the Arve tool rather well to tweak things a bit more in attempt to alleviate some of the issues I was seeing for a few specific discs in particular that just looked off to me (King Kong on UHD BD for example.  I felt like I needed a separate Arve curve for this title to look right where as it looks fine on the 820).  All of that is now gone with the 820.  I don't see any oddities any longer or so far at least.

Kris also mentioned the Arve had some color issues which are not existent on the 820.

I highly recommend the 820.
