A long time ago

A million years BC
The best things in life
Were absolutely free
But no one appreciated
A sky that was always blue
And no one congratulated
A moon that was always new
So it was planned that they would vanish now and them
And you must pay before you get them back again
That's what storms were made for
And you shouldn't be afraid for

Pennies from Heaven is 1981 musical set in the depression era of the 1930s. It starts Steve Martin, who has a terrible marriage with a woman, Jessica Harper, who does not want to be touched.

Martin has the goal of setting up his own sheet music and record store and is seeking financing. He meets up with Bernadette Peters and begins an unusual relationship and reliance. He also is a witness to a murder and is accused of it..

This it’s a very dark movie that gets darker as it goes on. What makes this movie even more unique is that it is that this is a musical. But it has no new numbers. The cast is shown as fantasizing the events the way they would like them to turn out. This requires them to lip sync to older records and famous old songs. But that’s not enough. They become part of Busby Berkeley type dance production numbers that are just actually outstanding. This is Steve Martin second or third movie and he had to learn to tap dance and he does it wonderfully well. Towards the end of the movie, he even  has a number with him and Fred Astaire.

Christopher Watkins also has a roll in this movie. I didn’t know it, but he was trained not just to be an actor but to be a dancer. So he doesn’t incredible and weird dance to “Let’s Misbehave.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and give it a “very good”rating. The movie failed miserably at the box office. And like so many movies it has become more popular since.

The movie was based on a six episode TV series from Great Britain, one that I have never seen.

The video here was exceptionally good, but this was only a Blu-ray and not a 4K. Honestly, I look 4K to me. The colors were vibrant, the black and whites were exceptional, and the image was as good as it can get.  The two channel sound was perfect for this type of movie and this setting.

Once again, though, this movie is not for everyone. Steve Martin does not even try to be funny. But if you like old movies and old dance numbers, give this a try.

Every time it rains it rains
Pennies from heaven
Don't you know each cloud contains
Pennies from heaven
You'll find your fortune falling
All over town
Be sure that your umbrella is upside down
Trade them for a package of sunshine and flowers
If you want the things you love
You must have showers
So when you hear it thunder
Don't run under a tree
There'll be pennies from heaven for you and me
