Innerspace (1987, 4K UHD Blu-ray) review
« on: April 02, 2026, 08:30:48 PM »

Studio: Arrow
Release Date: April 28, 2026
Rating: PG
Film: 4/5

Plot
Maverick pilot Tuck Pendleton (Dennis Quaid) is on the verge of making history as part of a top‑secret experiment to miniaturize a human being and inject him into a rabbit. When rogue scientists attempt to steal the technology, Tuck is accidentally injected into hypochondriac grocery store clerk Jack Putter (Martin Short) instead. With the help of investigative reporter Lydia Maxwell (Meg Ryan), Jack must locate the stolen technology to return Tuck to normal size—before the bad guys extract him by force.

My Thoughts
I never reviewed the Blu‑ray release of Innerspace, and I don’t believe I’ve watched it since seeing it in theaters back in 1987. Revisiting it now was a true blast from the past—and one I enjoyed immensely.

Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins), the film strikes an effective balance between action and comedy while giving its three leads plenty of room to shine. Dennis Quaid brings an easygoing, cocky charm to Tuck Pendleton, Martin Short is in top form as the perpetually anxious Jack Putter, and Meg Ryan adds energy and charisma as the determined reporter Lydia Maxwell.

The film isn’t without flaws. While consistently entertaining, the script occasionally tries to do too much, and at nearly two hours the pacing can drag in spots. That said, the core concept—a miniaturized man racing through another person’s body—remains inventive and serves as a clever twist on the traditional “buddy movie” formula.

The visual effects are particularly impressive given the film’s age. Industrial Light & Magic was rapidly becoming a major force in the late ’80s, and Innerspace is one of the films that helped establish them as Hollywood’s premier visual effects house. While effects technology has advanced dramatically over the past four decades, many of the inner‑body sequences still hold up remarkably well, especially moments involving the heart and stomach. Despite its imperfections, Innerspace remains a fun and imaginative ’80s popcorn movie that holds up better than expected.

Arrow Video’s 4K Ultra HD Blu‑ray release features a new restoration from the original 35mm camera negative, supervised and approved by director Joe Dante. The film is presented in 2160p at 1.85:1 with Dolby Vision HDR (HDR10 compatible). Detail is crisp and sharp in close‑ups, practical effects, and miniature sequences, while colors appear vibrant and accurate. Contrast is excellent, with deep blacks and bright highlights that make this nearly 40‑year‑old film look surprisingly modern. Film grain remains natural and consistent, with only occasional softness in a handful of optical effects keeping the presentation from a perfect score.

The audio options include the restored original lossless 2.0 stereo, the original 70mm 6-track mix in DTS-HD MA 4.1 surround, and a newly remixed Dolby Atmos track. All sound great, but I preferred the immersion of the Dolby Atmos track over the others. Dialog is clear, the surrounds place you inside the body with pulsing heartbeats, rushing blood, and chaotic external sounds, and the height channels add nice overhead flair during the more frantic sequences. Bass response is strong without being overpowering, resulting in a dynamic and engaging mix.

Video 9.5/10
Audio 8.5/10  (Dolby Atmos)

Special Features:

  • Archive Audio Commentary with director Joe Dante, producer Michael Finnell, VFX supervisor Dennis Muren and actors Keven McCarthy and Rober Picardo
  • Shrinkage: The Making of Innerspace (New)
  • Behind the Scenes with Joe Dante

Conclusion
Growing up in the ’80s was a special experience, and revisiting its films in 4K continues to be a visual treat. Arrow Video has done an excellent job with this release, delivering a strong restoration that highlights the film’s impressive practical effects and miniature work. The Dolby Atmos remix adds an extra layer of immersion, further enhancing the experience.

Innerspace remains entertaining and inventive, even if the script occasionally overreaches. Fans of Joe Dante’s work—or anyone with a fondness for creative ’80s genre films—will find this release well worth picking up. Highly recommended.

Great review, David.  Like you, I haven't watched this since it was first in the theaters but had good memories of it.  Glad to hear that it holds up.

Arrow has been doing great work on their 4K releases, and the Atmos soundtrack is a nice bonus.  I'll be putting this one on my buy list, for sure.

Thanks Scott. My wife was laughing-out-loud during the comedy segments. She really enjoyed it a lot.

Greetings,

Definitely a fun revisit. I am not sure it holds up extremely well, especially given Martin Short's schtick, but we enjoyed it.

Nice review buddy...
