Snakes on a Plane (2006) (4K UHD Blu-ray) review

Studio: Arrow Video
Release Date: January 20, 2026
Rating: R
Film: 3/5

Plot
An FBI agent (Samuel L. Jackson) must escort a key witness on a trans-Pacific flight from Hawaii to Los Angeles, but the plane becomes a deadly trap when hundreds of venomous snakes are released mid-flight as part of a mob assassination plot. With the cabin locked down at 30,000 feet, passengers and crew fight for survival against the slithering horde while the pilot struggles to land safely.

My Thoughts
This is a pure B-movie that knows exactly what it is and lans into it hard delivering an entertaining, in a guilty-pleasure way, promised chaos with escalating absurdity as snakes wreak havoc. The typical tropes are all here—gratuitous nudity that doesn’t advance the story, over-the-top deaths, and of course, a few cringe-inducing moments that remind you not to take the film too seriously. The good thing is, the film never pretends to be anything more than the fun, brain-off thrill ride that you’d expect from the film’s title with Samuel L. Jackson being the highlight. He carries every scene with his perfect comedic timing of iconic one-liners (you know the one) and his no-nonsense attitude sells the ridiculous premise. The supporting cast fills in nicely to keep the story going and at 105 minutes, it moves fast and doesn’t overstay its welcome.

Arrow has been doing a great job at restoring films in 4K and this is no exception. According to the studio, the 4K transfer was sourced from the original 2K DI and color graded at Duplitch. It includes both HDR 10 and Dolby Vision and the quality control was completed by Pixelogic. My only experience with the film has been via cable, so I didn’t have the Blu-ray to compare it to. Overall, the film looks quite sharp and details in clothing, sets, and facial textures look great. The Hawaii shot scenes make you want to hop on a plane for vacation (sans the snakes) and the color palette is bold and bright.

The DTS-HD MA 5.1 track features crisp dialog and the surround channels do a good job of placing rattles, hisses, and screams in all the right places. The LFE gets a decent workout from the score and the when the action kicks up on the plane, the soundtrack ups the ante and keeps you engaged.

Conclusion
Fans of the film will be very happy with the 4K upgrade that sharpens the chaos and the DTS-HD MA 5.1 track makes every hiss and strike feel personal. For some reason, my wife has always wanted to see it (even though it isn’t typically her genre) and for the most part, we had fun with it. Jackson is by far the highlight of the movie and while the topic is absurd as can be, there are worse ways to spend a Friday night. Recommended for fans.

Sounds like another fine release from Arrow; they're really treating these older films well.

Glad to hear your wife liked it as well!  Maybe she starting to ease up a bit on these more action-oriented and violence filled movies?
