Star Trek: Starfleet  Academy, a non- spoiler review

The Final Frontier: these are the episodes of the Star Trek Franchise. It’s on-going mission, to re-explore strange old plots, to seek out more subscribers, to boldly go where a dozen tv shows and 13 movies  have gone before!

Star Fleet Academy picks up where Star Trek Discovery  ended. That is at the total collapse of starfleet after the dilithium crystals across the universe lost their power.

I must say that I really miss the first two generations of Star Trek. I really enjoyed going with no man had gone before and I wish they would return to that. Strange New Worlds often does that.

So in a funny way, although that this takes place in the future, they are looking to their past. That is, there have often been suggestions for a star fleet Academy TV show showing the beginnings of Starfleet. However, they gave us Star Trek discovery, Enterprise and Strange New Worlds. So to give us the creation of Starfleet, they created a new future, which is very much like their past.

The show looks beautiful. It is hard to believe how incredible special effects have gotten since we first boarded the Enterprise.

I almost liked the two episodes they presented. Much of it was good, but they kept getting bogged down  with teen-aged soap opera plots. It was like they wanted to be 90201 in space.

I believe that Starfleet had a distinct disadvantage. It often takes new shows a few episodes even a year to get it all together. It took the Next Generation  two seasons to get it all together..

Here, they had to introduce a new universe, a new mission and too many new characters that came from other planets. Normally, you might be able to explain the personality of a character quickly in a first episode but here they’re all aliens that you have to explain even more.. .so I think I have to give this show a little time to cook. At time it was tedious.

Holly Hunter, their new leader, is always good and you can see that she’s working really hard to find this role. Again, you have to give her a little time .

Paul Giamatti plays the villain from the very first scene of the first episode. At first, I thought he was a bit over the top, but then he reminded me of Harcourt Fenton Mudd, who I bet he was emulating.

I guess the audience they want to capture are the young of viewers who are now streaming, rather than the older viewers like me that are more selective. Even here, The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few (or the one).

I've watched some clips of the show and I doubt I'll give it a chance. I didn't like Discovery at all (couldn't get through the first season), but I really like Strange New Worlds. I put that show up with TOS, TNG, and DS9--great storytelling and likeable characters. After you've watched more episodes Barry, please report back what you think and whether it's worth my time to watch.

I should have mentioned this in the previous post, but I didn’t like Star Trek Discovery either. And I too stopped after the first season. I also did not like Enterprise. and I was not a fan of the last three Star Trek movies.

I should have mentioned this in the previous post, but I didn’t like Star Trek Discovery either. And I too stopped after the first season. I also did not like Enterprise. and I was not a fan of the last three Star Trek movies.

The first one is best known as "Star Trek: The LACK of Motion Picture"   Damn that movie was slow! When I was introducing my kids to Star Trek when they were young, I skipped that movie because I knew that it would turn them off. When we transitioned to movies, we went straight to Wrath of Khan

I did not like STD either. In fact, I got to the last couple of episodes of S1, realized I just didn't care and didn't like the story or characters and stopped watching with 2 episodes left. 

The last season of Enterprise was actually pretty good. They brought in Manny Coto midway in S3, who was a true ST fan and really understood the heart of what ST should be, and did some very good stories. It's too bad that it was too little too late.

I've started watching SNW and it's been kinda blah so far but I'm only 4 episodes in. It's taken me a few months to watch those b/c while it hasn't totally turned me off, it hasn't really grabbed me either. I've heard good things so I keep coming back and watching 1 ep every month or so.

Paul, get through the first season because it continues to improve as it goes along. Gotta trust me on this one. My daughter felt the same way and when she finished the first season she thanked me for pushing her to stick with it. She didn't get through Discovery either.

It's getting torn apart on X from comments about not having Ozempic in the future to haven't they figured out how to correct vision (I guess Holly Hunter's character wears glasses). I may have to watch the first couple of episodes to give it a shot, but three people who are Trek fans like myself have all panned it and say it makes the first season of Enterprise look great by comparison. Ouch!
