Directed by Alan J. Pakula and written by William Goldman, the film is based on the 1974 non-fiction book by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward.  All the President’s Men stars Academy Award winners Robert Redford (Ordinary People) and Dustin Hoffman (Kramer vs Kramer, Rain Man), along with Academy Award nominee Jack Warden (Shampoo, Heaven Can Wait), Academy Award winner Martin Balsam (A Thousand Clowns), Academy Award nominee Hal Holbrook (Into the Wild), and Academy Award Winner Jason Robards (Julia).

The film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 4 for Best Supporting Actor (Robards), Best Screenplay – Based on Material from Another Medium (Goldman), Best Art Direction (George C. Jenkins & George Gaines), and Best Sound (Arthur Piantadosi, Les Fresholz, Dick Alexander, and James E. Webb).

In 2010, All the President’s Men was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

About the Film

Another classic hits home video.  Looks like a great start to 2026!

Fantastic movie, even if it dramatized the "real" story a bit (that's OK). Great performances too.

It's a good drama with some thriller type elements to it.

I viewed the 4K movie last night. It was unique experience because it’s my viewing since learning that Mark Felt was Deep Throat. It added a new perspective  to what was unfolding.  This movie is almost a who done it, a mystery that needed to be unraveled. but it was diligence and hard work that found the culprits.

Visually, this is definitely a movie made in the 1970s, 1976 to be exact. The colors are superior to what was on the blu ray and the shading and shodows are otustanding. It looks great, but still looks like a 1970s movie to me. On a 1 to 10 scale I would give the image a nine and a half.

The movie is also monaural,  DTS two channel, but ihe dialouge is clear and distinct and cnfortsable to listen to. Atmos would have been grest in teh garage scenes!!!!  But again, 9.5 for what it is.

 It’s very important movie and I think that there are lessons here that apply today. And  the old old-fashioned photography kind of adds to the mystery of who did what and when. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman are just terrific here too. And the movie has a dozen guest stars in small roles.

Definitely worth watching, more so now than ever.

Also worth watching are some of the bonus features which are recorded decades after. they discuss how the government has changed and how it would therefore be much harder for reporters to reveal the truth on a scandal. For example, they discussed that today Woodward and Bernstein would be brought in front of a grand jury and be forced to reveal their sources or go to jail. This is another way of elected, governmental, officials, protecting themselves.
