I am really not a fan of horror movies, or violent movies or movies with a lot of blood. But I heard so much about this movie that I did want to see it today on Netflix now that it is no longer in the movie theaters.
The movie is 2 1/2 hours long. It is written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, a director, with whom, if I was to be totally honest, is not one of my favorite, and I knew that this would be a violent horror movie, but I still figured I’d give it a shot.
It turns out that this happens to be a very good movie, although a bit over long. It takes place almost 200 years ago and it just looks beautiful. The photography, scenery, locations and costumes reminded me of the movie Barry Lyndon they were so well done.
The plot was a bit closer to the original book by Mary Shelly and you are drawn into the movies by a very good cast and the visuals. Christopher Waltz is needlessly added, and as always, is wonderful, but his role was not necessary for this movie.
It does have its very violent moments with a lot of blood. But it is nothing like the James Whales movie that we all remember.
The cast is exceptional. The film stars Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, and Mia Goth as Elizabeth.
The movie is so gorgeous to look at that you don’t mind so much that it’s over long especially if it’s on Netflix where you can put it on pause and get more popcorn. Sadly, the surround on Netflix is good, but never great. It seemed like good surround, even good stereo, but not Atmos.
There is one thing that you won’t read about very much.Del Toro was very much influenced by the artwork of Bernie Wrightson, who drew a graphic novel of Frankenstein for Marvel although it’s now been republished through different publishers. The director even said that he modeled the monster after Bernie’s work. So, I figured I would put up a picture from that graphic novel so you can see what the monster was modeled after.
