Dark City: A 4K Extended Version Review.
 
First, this is a great movie. And almost no one knows about it.  You’d think that a 1998 movie starring Rufus Sewell, William Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O'Brien, and Ian Richardson would be more well known.
 
This is a top-notch sci fi thriller that is also Film Noir.  Film Noir, of the 1940s, were black and white movies involving a mystery, usually a murder. This fits right in. I learned about it, way back when, Roger Ebert placed this on his best movie list of 1998.
 
The movie opens with John Murdoch taking a bath and discovering he has amnesia. As he tries to discover what his reality is, the reality, his and yours, keeps changing. So you have to really pay attention to what is going on.
 
The movie is beautifully photographed and looks incredible in 4K. REALLY!  It’s stunning visually! The Blu-Ray was fine, but the details here ae incredible and the blacks and whites are outstanding. And the soundtrack is also perfect. The Dolby Atmos surround adds to the atmosphere and draws you into this dark city. (the disc also has  Dolby True HD 7.1, DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1  and DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks.  I liked the Dolby Atmos the most.
 
The 4K disc ha the original release and the extended version.  While loved the original, the extended version is the one to watch.  The pacing is a bit different and it explains a bit more, but ten more minutes of a great movie is a wonderful find. The movie the Matrix, released a year later, seems to borrow from this movie.
 
I was watching this movie with my friend Karen, who said halfway through, “I love this movie, I love everything about this movie.” She then went to the internet to find out why she hadn’t heard of it before.

I think I saw this 25 years ago, but really can't remember it. I may have to seek it out.

Barry, this is how I know you have amazing taste in movies, because I completely agree.

I've seen it 2-3 times but it's been a while. Love it. It's such an interesting and original movie, of course with some influences but there really aren't many like it.

I was looking for news a few months ago about a 4K release, so I'm very happy to see this!

[Edit: Crap... this was released back in June and I missed it, looks like it sold out, can't tell if this might come back in stock. I haven't been able to get Master & Commander yet either so I feel like this is starting to be a worrying trend that they are kind of following the old Disney movie release strategy of releasing a limited number on physical media where the price doesn't drop much if at all, and the secondary market hustlers benefit.]

If it's a " limited release ", you need to jump on it at $35.00 - it isn't going lower. I just got my copy of Master and Commander 4K after catching it available again after the first ones sold out, and waiting 8 weeks. Same with the first two Tron movies.

Well I might have jumped on it if I'd seen it, lol.

Been checking on Amazon occasionally but never saw it available, so I just looked around and found it on ebay for $30 and grabbed one.
