Studio: Universal Pictures
Release Date: August 12, 2025
Rating: PG-13
 Film:  4.5/5

 Plot
On the Isle of Berk, Vikings and dragons have battled for generations, but that won’t stop Hiccup (Mason Thames), the son of Chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), from building an unlikely bond with the feared dragon, Toothless. With an ancient evil threatening their worlds, it’s up to Hiccup, Toothless, and their courageous companion Astrid (Nico Parker) to make the realm realize they’re stronger together, and only through friendship and bravery can they overcome the challenges of a high-flying adventure.

My Thoughts
I wasn’t sure what to expect from the remake, but fortunately, the film retains the heart of the original, preserving its themes of friendship, acceptance, and courage, while weaving in subtle updates for a modern audience. The chemistry between Thames’ earnest Hiccup and Nico Parker’s spirited Astrid is outstanding, their banter and growing bond echoing the animated duo’s charm while adding a fresh, lived-in dynamic. The supporting cast, including Butler’s commanding Stoick and Julian Dennison’s lively Snotlout, adds depth. The CGI is a triumph, blending seamlessly with live-action elements to create a world where dragons feel real and their flight sequences—especially Toothless’ soaring acrobatics—are exhilaratingly immersive. Eagle-eyed fans may spot nods to the animated trilogy, like Hiccup’s sketchbook designs mirroring the original’s style. While some pacing hiccups and minor plot tweaks may irk purists, the film’s emotional core and visual splendor make it a worthy successor that captures the magic of Berk.

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s 4K UHD release delivers a HEVC/H.265-encoded 2160p transfer with Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible), sourced from a native 4K master. The presentation is near reference-quality, boasting crisp detail in Berk’s rugged landscapes and dragon scales, with Toothless’ expressive eyes rendered in stunning clarity. Colors pop vividly—fiery dragon blasts and lush island greens dazzle—and the image offers exceptional depth, especially in aerial sequences. The CGI dragons integrate seamlessly, their textures and lighting matching the live-action environments, enhancing the illusion of a real dragon-filled world. My only real gripes are the black levels seem a tad elevated and the film is presented with a variable aspect ratio that runs between 2.0:1 for action sequences and 2.39:1 for the rest of the film. As an owner of a scope screen, I’m not a fan of these presentations.

The Dolby Atmos track is reference-quality, delivering a dynamic and enveloping soundscape that transports viewers to Berk. Dialogue is crystal-clear, anchoring the emotional exchanges, while John Powell’s reimagined score soars with lush orchestration. The surround channels shine during dragon flight scenes, with wind, wingbeats, and roars swirling around the listener. Foundation-shaking bass grounds the action, from dragon fire blasts to Viking battles, adding visceral impact. The mix balances subtle ambient details—like Berk’s bustling village sounds—with high-octane moments, creating a fully immersive experience that rivals the best modern blockbusters.

Video 9.5/10

I did not expect to enjoy it, but actually both Lori and I had a great time with it. I think the great A/V quality helped :)
