Clueless 30th Anniversary (4k UHD Blu-ray) review

Studio: Paramount
Release Date: July 8, 2025
Rating: PG-13
 Film:  3.5/5

 Plot
Cher's world unravels with the sudden appearance of two hunks: a sexy new classmate, and her square but cute ex-stepbrother. Now she's learning that when it comes to love, she's Clueless.

My Thoughts
Clueless remains a delight even 30 years after its initial theatrical run, with Silverstone’s star-making performance anchoring a hilarious and heartfelt satire of 90s teen culture. The film’s sharp script, memorable catchphrases (“As if!”), and stellar supporting cast—including Paul Rudd, Brittany Murphy, and Stacey Dash—ensure it holds up as a timeless comedy. Its 97-minute runtime feels brisk although some say it could have been longer to flesh out subplots, but I’m not one to complain since it never wears out its welcome. The controversial step-sibling romance between Cher and Josh (Rudd) feels dated but isn’t the story’s focus, allowing the film’s charm to overshadow minor flaws. Its nostalgic appeal and quotability make it endlessly rewatchable.

The 4K UHD presentation, boasts a new transfer and delivers a noticeable improvement over previous Blu-ray releases. The 1.85:1 image pops with vibrant colors, especially the bubblegum pinks and yellows of Cher’s wardrobe, which shine with enhanced clarity. Black levels are deeper, and contrast is punchier, giving the film a lively, energetic feel that suits its playful tone. Film grain is well-managed, preserving the cinematic texture without introducing digital artifacts. However, some scenes reveal minor imperfections, such as slight softness or occasional noise, so it’s far from perfect. While the transfer is a step up, it doesn’t fully dazzle as a top-tier 4K restoration.

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack is a marginal improvement over the Dolby Digital 5.1 track from earlier releases. Dialog is clean and well-prioritized, capturing the film’s snappy banter. The pop-heavy 1990s soundtrack, featuring hits from the era, benefits from decent stereo separation across the front channels. However, the mix lacks dynamic range, with underwhelming bass and sparse use of surrounds, even in livelier scenes like parties or Dionne’s chaotic freeway sequence.

Video 8.5/10
Audio 7.5/10  (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

 Special Features:

The Steelbook is a highlight, sporting a glossy, embossed slipcase with Cher’s iconic yellow plaid outfit, extending the pattern across the case for a bold, nostalgic aesthetic.

 Conclusion
The Clueless 30th Anniversary Edition UHD Blu-ray delivers a solid but not spectacular upgrade. The 4K transfer enhances the film’s colorful aesthetic, and the Steelbook’s eye-catching design is a treat for fans, but the lackluster audio and recycled special features dampen the celebration. While the movie remains a 90s classic, this release feels like a missed opportunity for a definitive edition, especially with no new commentary or Atmos track. Recommended for collectors and new viewers, but double-dippers may not justify the price premium you have to pay for the Steelbook release.
