Plot
Clint Eastwood returns to the western genre with a vengeance as the movie became the highest grossing western of that decade. Eastwood, who also directed the hit film, plays a nameless stranger who rides into a small California gold rush town (and becomes known as the "Preacher") where he finds himself in the middle of a feud between a mining syndicate and a group of independent prospectors.
My Thoughts
Released in 1985, the film follows Eastwood's mysterious Preacher, a gunslinger who arrives in a small gold-mining town to aid a group of prospectors terrorized by a ruthless mining baron, Coy LaHood (Richard Dysart). The pacing is deliberate yet gripping, allowing tension to build as the Preacher’s past remains shrouded in ambiguity. Eastwood’s stoic performance anchors the film, while the stark cinematography of the Sierra Nevada mountains enhances the story’s moody atmosphere. The supporting cast, including Michael Moriarty as the earnest Hull Barret and Carrie Snodgress as his resilient partner Sarah, adds depth to the community’s struggle against greed and oppression.
The film came out when I was in high school but I didn’t see it in theaters. I ended up catching it on home video a few years later and I enjoyed it. It’s hard to believe that 40 years has gone by, but the film holds up extremely well despite its age. It’s a timeless tale of good versus evil and you can see that Eastwood was taking his director’s role seriously and had evolved as a filmmaker. It turns out that his best work was yet to come.
Like the other two Eastwood films released at this time,
Dirty Harry
and
The Outlaw Josey Wales
,
Pale Rider
is just as impressive and has a lot of the same attributes—grain is in-tact, shadow detail is excellent, the color palette is consistent throughout the film, and detail is excellent. I own the 2008 Blu-ray and to say this is a vast improvement over the VC-1 encode would be an understatement. Like the other two movies, both the original soundtrack (DTS-HD 2.0 stereo) and newly minted Atmos track are available. As expected, the Atmos track opens up the soundstage which adds some heft to the action sequences and environmental effects are placed throughout the room. While the purists will opt for the 2.0 track, I much prefer the Atmos mix.
Video 9.5/10
Audio 9.5/10 (Dolby Atmos)

Conclusion
Pale Rider
isn’t just a tale of good versus evil; it’s a meditation on justice and redemption, leaving viewers to ponder the Preacher’s true identity long after the credits roll. It’s a must-watch for fans of Westerns seeking a blend of grit and enigma and with the stellar audio and video, it’s easy to recommend the upgrade to 4K. If you’ve never seen the film before, this is the best way to watch it.
