Scott and David put up a great post of their five favorite films this year. The films had to be knew, both in the theaters and on our home video. What are your favorite discs this year?
It got me thinking to what my favorite 4K discs of 2024 were. These do not have to be new movies, but new to 4K. And I don’t feel bound to lists being “round” numbers. You can have 5, 6 or 8.
High Noon: (1952)
This is just a darn good movie, with Gary Cooper, Lloyd Bridges and Grace Kelly. On one had it is a simple story, a bunch of bad guys are coming to get the sheriff. The bonus material alerted me to this movie being controversial. John Wayne thought is it was a “communist” picture because a sheriff was asking for help, rather than having a showdown with five guys by himself. Also, women play an important part in the solution. The background does not always look sharp, but still good.
Oppenheimer (2024)
Just the best. Story wise, video and audio. Just the best!
Aliens: (1986)
It is rare that a sequel is as good and as memorable as the original. Sigourney Weaver is back, but not Ridley Scott the director. This new guy, James Cameron takes over. (What ever became of him?) Not on this disc, but on the original Laser disc release Cameron explained why 20 minutes were removed form the movie ands why the movie s better with the 20 minutes back. (Contractually, it had to be a certain length. They removed, mostly for the beginning, Ridley’s reunion with her daughter.) Not the best image, but still darn good.
North By Northwest (1961)
I am not a big Hitchcock fan but this is still a darn good movie. Just everything is perfect and lines up.
Galaxy Quest: 1999
A wonderful movie, one of the best Star treks ever made. It is a comedy, a drama, a satire and just wonderful and it looks and sounds great.
Wolverine and Deadpool (2004)
A wonderful, funny and clever movie and a tribute to the Marvel movies of the late 20th Century Fox. It looks and sounds great and has a great ribute during the end titles.
Terminator: 1984
The movie does look a bit dated but better than the blu ray. I went with friends to see this almost 40 yeas ago. We thought it was going to be a cheap “B” movie. It turned out to be a cheap “A” movie. Good story, good casting good everything.
Funny Girl (1968 )
I love musicals. This is an “okay” movie with the incredible Barbara Streisand who makes it a great musical. It looks and sounds great.
Gladiator (2000)
This movie just looks and sound terrific. It was like it was made yesterday, not 25 years ago,
