Timely thread - the WSJ just ran an article about how Amazon's acquisition of MGM, the studio that owns rights to make the Bond films - has led to a standoff with the custodian of the Bond legacy, Barbara Broccoli.

Some choice excerpts from the longish article:

Yes, now there's nothing to keep Bond, Bond.  I'm guessing whatever they produce will only superficially look like 007.

Hopefully it fares better than Star Wars has with new ownership.

I look at what Amazon did with Tolkien's work, and don't have much hope for Bond.

I didn't watch it but the Jack Ryan series seems to have fared pretty well on Amazon per reviews & reports I've seen.

Jack Reacher has been pretty good.

I definitely understand the skepticism though. There is a lot of pressure from different directions to be "seen" in a big franchise, no matter what the source or original intent was.

I finally bought all of the Bond films...I needed 6 to finish the collection and I purchased them through Gruv for about $10 each. Now the question is....when will I find time to watch them all? Over the past couple of weeks we did watch Dr. No and From Russia with Love. The plan is to go through them all in order.

The Daniel Craig movies are already out in 4K. In June the Sean Connery ones will be released in 4K.

I was referring to the Connery classic Bond films. Looking forward to Goldfinger in 4K!

Villeneuve is a very promising start. Hope he sticks with it and equally importantly, the casting.
