My Movie Ratings and Rating all Marvel Universe Movies
« on: November 09, 2024, 02:41:48 PM »
Thanks so much for the positive comments.  Really!!!

In going back to giving new movies reviews, I thought I have some fun just reintroducing how I like to rate movies.  Years ago, we used a star system, because that is how the local papers did it.  But it was not how I talked to my friends.  First, I ask, if this is “your kind of picture?” Some people hate musicals, or sci fi or super-hero.  We appreciate all here.

But rather than just listing my ratings:
Great
Very Good
Good
Just Sit through able
Bad
Very Bad

As the HIGHEST RANKED fan of the Marvel Universe, I thought it would be fun to list the Marvel Universe Movies by Catalog.  HIGHEST RANKED? Stan used to give outranks to fans and the highest one, which only about 10-15 people got) was “F.F.F.” (Fearless Face Fronter) which I got for writing my 1,400 page book on the Marvel Age. In his older years Stan asked me for research and wrote me:  “Hey, many thanks, Barry. It's nice to know that the expression was mine. And it's nice to know that you are so helpful. It's like having my own research bureau! By the power vested within me, I hereby award you an oak leaf cluster for your F.F.F.!”
So I am the highest ranked!!!!!

Great
Captain America I, II, III
Avengers III and IV
Black Panther
Spider-Man No Way Home

Very Good
Iron Man
Doctor Strange
Captain Marvel
Thor Ragnarok
Avengers
Guardians of the Galaxy II
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Ant-Man

Good
Guardians of the Galaxy I & III
Incredible Hulk
Avengers Age of Ultron
Thor
Ant-Man II
Spider-Man Homecoming
Spider-Man Far From Home

Just Sit through able
Wakanda Forever
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Bad
Thor Dark World
Black Widow
Thor Love and Thunder
Iron Man II and III
Ant-Man III

Very Bad
Eternals
The Marvels

Finally, we know movies are always different from books and that time changes characters. James Bond can no longer smoke 60 cigarettes and day and drink half a bottle of liquor. But I always hope movies will capture the essence of the original character.

That was done with Captain America.  Although the original Bucky was a 12 year old war orphan and Cap did not have Hailey Atwell at his side, they captured his essence.

Not so with Thor, my greatest disappointment.  Thor, for being so arrogant, was sent to Earth as a MORTAL, a lame doctor who would learn humility.  Jane Foster was not the atomic scientist she portrayed in the movie, but his nurse.

Barry,

I pretty much agree with your assessment. Frankly, since the last Spiderman film, Marvel has been nearly unwatchable and it's pretty disappointing. Sadly, they've turned the franchise into must "NOT" watch material.

Totally agree.  I did like Deadpool and Wolverine, but that is more of the other franchise!  Recently, it’s been too much of combining with their streaming too.

I enjoyed all the movies higher on your list. As for these -

Just Sit through able
Wakanda Forever - never seen it and I have no interest in watching it.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - have the movie on 4K Blu-ray. Haven't bothered to watch it yet.

Bad
Thor Dark World - I actually liked this one. Didn't think it was as bad as people said.
Black Widow - I liked this too but it came out in the wrong order - it's an origin story.
Thor Love and Thunder - haven't bothered to watch it even though I have the 4K disc.
Iron Man II and III - these were okay. #3 was directed by Shane Black who has made some of my favorite movies and is a customer of mine, so it gets an extra star for that.
Ant-Man III - never seen it. Probably never will.

Very Bad
Eternals - never seen it. Probably never will.
The Marvels - never seen it. Probably never will.

Your right about the Black Widow.  More than that, it shows hat Marvel characters xcannot die.  She is in a movie after her death, the Vision gt a TV show after he dies, Gamora dies and returns and so does Bucky and the Red Skull. Most of teh villians in Spidey No way Home (Doc Ock and others) died. I am sue I left a few thing out.

Ant Man III belongs in the "Very Bad" camp. Very hard to get through.
