Studio: Warner Brothers
Release Date: September 24, 2024
Rating: PG
Film: 5/5

Plot
From creators and executive producers Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, Young Sheldon centers on Sheldon Cooper, a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science, which isn’t always helpful in a land where church and football are king. And while the vulnerable, gifted, and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. For 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric, and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. This single-camera, half-hour comedy takes viewers through his childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward, and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

My Thoughts
When The Big Bang Theory hit the airwaves, I didn’t take the time to watch it in the beginning. In fact, I completely ignored it and spent most of my leisure time watching movies. As the show started syndication, my teenage son started watching it and found it hilarious and convinced the rest of the family to check it out and we were hooked from the first laugh.

We ended up buying all of the available seasons on Blu-ray and as the later seasons started to come up for review, I was sure to request them along the way and the show turned out to be one of our favorite sitcoms of all time. When it was announced that a prequel was in the works to develop Sheldon’s origin story, my wife and I thought we’d give it a chance but were sure to keep our expectations in check.

The show’s first couple episodes were a little rough as the writers tried to establish the characters, but in episode 3 Annie Potts is introduced as Mee Maw and she became the catalyst for the show to go from amusing to outstanding. While TBBT is very sexual in its humor, that is not the case with Young Sheldon. Given the kid’s ages when the show starts out, the writing is much more innocent and touching and reminds me more of the Brady Bunch or Andy Griffith than the show it spun off from.

The show was a ratings hit from the beginning and eventually captured the #1 comedy slot on TV and it was a “must watch” show in our household. My wife and I fell in love with the characters, especially Georgie (Montana Jordan) and his twin sister Mandy (Reagan Revord). The casting director struck gold by casting Zoe Perry as the Mary Cooper because she sounds and acts just like Sheldon’s mother from TBBT, Lori Metcalf. Low and behold, we discovered why shortly after the show’s debut—Perry is the biological daughter of Metcalf, which explains why she understood the character so well—she’s mimicking her actual real-life Mother!

All good things ultimately come to an end and when it was announced that the show would end after seven seasons, we weren’t too happy because we’d miss most of the characters. Funny enough, our least favorite story lines had to do with Sheldon and we really enjoyed when the rest of the cast was the central focus of the stories.

Somewhere around the fifth or sixth season, my wife and I would discuss the possibility of a spin-off series that would continue to follow the family as Sheldon ran off to Cal-Tech, but we weren’t sure it would ever happen. Sure enough, in season six Georgie gets involved with Mandy and, spoiler alert, they end up getting married. As luck would have it, the pair are getting their own show which debuts in a couple of weeks titled “George and Mandy’s
First Marriage” on CBS, which means we get to visit with our friends from Texas on a weekly basis for a little while longer. While the entire cast wasn’t brought back, the old cast is sure to make guest appearances and we can hardly wait to watch the premiere on October 17.

Warner sent me the entire DVD set for review and unfortunately, Blu-rays weren’t available (I have since purchased the seasons I didn’t already own on Blu-ray and they should arrive in the next couple of weeks). Call me spoiled, but watching the show on DVD versus the HD broadcasts is just a step in the wrong direction. I love the show so much that I decided I’d review the DVD anyway and share my love of the show and maybe a reader or two will decide to give it a chance—you won’t regret it.

 Conclusion

While I wish the studio had sent out the Blu-ray set for review, I can’t really complain. I got to review three previous seasons of the show in 1080p and decided to purchase the rest for my collection. So this is a case of putting my money where my mouth is. My wife and I absolutely love this show and will certainly rewatch it in the future. Highly recommended.

Does this show have a laugh track? I tried to watch TBBT but I'm severely, severely allergic to laugh tracks. Drive me bonkers. (This is my version of Craig's "no animated movies"... ::) )

Nope, no laugh track. I believe there are a couple of seasons on Netflix if you want to give it a shot. Just give is 3 or 4 episodes though...it starts a bit slow.

Marc and l loved this show, we faithfully watched every week.
Just a follow up on Zoe Perry, l read an interview of her a few years ago, she wasn’t handed that role, she had to work hard to get it. Excellent casting decision.
Even though l knew how the story would end, being the huge Big Bang fan that l am, l was still shocked.
I really hope the spin offs do well
Thanks for this terrific review!
