Studio: Lions Gate
Release Date: September 10, 2024
Rating: R
Film: 4.5/5

Plot
Wind River is a chilling thriller that follows a rookie FBI agent (Olsen) who teams up with a game tracker with deep community ties and a haunted past (Renner) to investigate the mysterious killing of a local girl on a remote Native American reservation.

Following its critically acclaimed premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, the Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh™ film stars two-time Academy Award® nominee Jeremy Renner (Best Actor, The Hurt Locker, 2008; Best Supporting Actor, The Town, 2010) and Elizabeth Olsen (Avengers franchise, Ingrid Goes West), alongside Gil Birmingham (Hell or High Water), Jon Bernthal (“The Walking Dead,” The Wolf of Wall Street), Martin Sensmeir (The Magnificent Seven franchise), Kelsey Asbille (“Teen Wolf,” “Embeds”), and Julia Jones (The Twilight Saga Franchise).

My Thoughts
Before Wind River, Writer/director Taylor Sheridan’s won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay with Hell or High Water. Frankly, he should have won it again along with Best Picture for this, but sadly, the film was produced by Harvey Weinsten and was blackballed because of the “Me Too” movement. I’ve watched this film four times in the last seven years and it never gets old. The performances by Renner and Olson are outstanding and even though I know the outcome of the story, it still keeps me on the edge of my seat.

The 4K presentation is great and compliments the already great looking and sounding Blu-ray. The audio track is upgraded to Dolby Atmos from DTS-HA MA 5.1 and I found the effects from the overhead speakers helped draw me into the picture a bit more.

Video 9.5/10 (AVC)

Audio 9.5/10 (Dolby Atmos)

 Conclusion
This is one of my favorite movies in the last ten years, which explains why I’ve watched it so many times. When I saw it was finally coming to 4K, I was stoked. I still feel bad for Sheridan that the film didn’t win any awards and was essentially ignored because of its producer, but if you haven’t seen it be sure to check it out. I’ve recommended it to many friends and family members and I’ve yet to hear back a negative review. Highly recommended.

Thanks for the recommendation on this one, David.

We watched it with friends tonight and everyone liked it a lot. Some parts were tough to watch, but it never felt exploitive.  All of the acting was top rate, and Sheridan’s script was tight and compelling.

Our library only had the Blu-ray available.  It looked great but I couldn't help but wonder how much better all of those snow scenes might look in HDR, so I'll be adding the 4K disc to our collection at some point.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I loved the editing as well...the flashback scene was a particularly good editing sequence when going back to the night of the murder.

It's sad it didn't get Oscar consideration given its ties to Weinstein, but I still find it to be one of the best films in the last 20 years...at least Top 5.
