Studio: Warner Brothers
Release Date: July 2, 2024
Rating: PG-13
Film: 4/5

Plot
Don’t breathe! Don’t look back! Just run for your life when a destructive force of nature comes howling straight toward you, destroying everything in its path – when you’re running from a Twister. Academy Award winner Helen Hunt stars as Dr. Jo Thornton-Harding, who as a small girl watched her father sucked to his death from her family’s storm cellar by a massive tornado. Now a storm chaser, a scientist who risks her life to study the dark side of nature by taking her data-transmitting instruments directly into the path of a deadly storm, Jo chases the largest tornado ever to strike Oklahoma as her marriage implodes and rival scientists will stop at nothing to steal her breakthrough.

My Thoughts
I’m old enough to remember the launch of DVD back in the late 1990s and Twister was played on an endless loop in virtually all electronics store I visited. At the time, it showcased the magic of Dolby Digital surround sound which I’m sure sold a boatload of big screen TVs, AVRs, and speaker systems. All that being said, this isn’t a great film (despite my 4/5 rating). There’s virtually no plot to the Michael Crighton adapted story and no one from the familiar cast was going to win an Oscar from the production, but who cares—it’s just a fun movie to watch.

Despite seeing various scenes of the movie over the years, I never owned it (or reviewed it) on DVD, HD DVD, or Blu-ray and for the life of me, can’t figure out why? It could have been a matter of timing or just a plain oversight by me, but having the film in 4K is probably the best way to see the film anyway.

Speaking of the 4K, the video transfer is quite good with plenty of detail, strong color palette and inky blacks. There are occasions where the camera seems to lose focus—maybe intentionally to hide the VFX shots, but overall it’s a solid effort for a catalog title. As expected the new Dolby Atmos track kicks some serious ass. The soundfield is unbelievably strong and robust, especially when the Twisters are on the screen. Dialog remains intelligible even in the most hectic scenes and the LFE track is outstanding. If Circuit City was still around today, I bet they’d have this 4K track playing in their demo room in order to boost sales.

Video 8/10
Audio 10/10 (Dolby Atmos)

Conclusion
The last time I sat down to watch this film beginning to end was when it was in theaters in 1996. Surprisingly, the film holds up well 28 years later as long as you don’t think too much about the paper-thin plot or cheesy dialog. One thing I noticed is the dialog may have been changed in order to keep the PG-13 rating. There were a couple of occasions where swear words were clearly removed (Kick-butt instead of kick-ass). Regardless, people aren’t watching this film to see Oscar-worthy writing or acting, they just want to be entertained. And with that in mind, it checks all of the required boxes—especially in the audio department.
