Red 2-Film Collection Steelbook (UHD Blu-ray) review

Studio:  Lions Gate
 Release Date: April 2, 2024
 Rating: PG-13

Film: 4/5

 Plot

RED
Frank (Willis) is a former black-ops CIA agent living a quiet life alone...until the day a hit squad shows up to kill him. With his identity compromised, Frank reassembles his old team - Joe (Freeman), Marvin (Malkovich) and Victoria (Mirren) - and sets out to prove that they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. Stand back and watch the bullets fly in this explosive action-comedy.

RED 2
Retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses (Willis) reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive assassins, terrorists and power-crazed government officials, all eager to get their hands on the superweapon.

 My Thoughts
For some unknown reason, both of these films slipped under my radar and I didn’t see them either theatrically or when they first hit home video well over 10 years ago. Thankfully, I was able to catch both of them when they were first released on UHD a few years back and really enjoyed them (the first a bit more than the second). They both offer a good mix of action along with just enough comedy to keep the proceedings light and entertaining. I really love how the first film progresses as Frank’s past life comes into focus. When they meet up in the second film, things are a bit more forced and don’t flow as naturally, but I still find it to be a fun ride.

These are the same presentations from their first releases on UHD, so unless you’re looking for the Steelbook packaging (Walmart Exclusive), there isn’t a reason to buy this collector’s set. The video encode is an upconversion from a 2K master, which sports slightly better detail than the Blu-rays. The audio tracks highlight the action with aggressive Atmos mixes that really pack a punch on the low end.

Video 8.5/10
Audio 9/10 (Dolby Atmos)

 Conclusion
This was my third time viewing each of the films in the past few years and neither of them has lost their charm and appeal. I love how there’s a good mix of action and humor and while the cast is very long in the tooth, they still have their A-game. Highly recommended.
