Dune 2

Anybody get a chance to see this in the theater yet? I was going to try and go this week but it's looking like next week at the earliest. The 4K Blu-ray is already up for pre-order, which is a no brainer to add to my collection.

Just got home from seeing it on IMAX.

WOW. As my friend who's read the book multiple times said, it was very possibly the coolest movie he's ever seen. The sandworm riding scenes are incredible and worth the biggest screen you can see it on.

There's also more than enough to justify a 2nd viewing. Rewatch Pt 1 too if you don't recall some of it and the characters.

My plan is to see it in IMAX next week and then rewatch 1 and 2 when the disc comes out.

Re-watched the first Dune with my wife Tuesday night. Never having read the books, it was a good refresher on the story. We went and saw the new one last night. Definitely liked the film - it's better than the first one. But there needs to be #3 to finish the story. These films lend themselves to a rainy weekend afternoon marathon back to back ( with a charcuterie platter and wine ).

That was exactly my thought at the end. Fortunately, Villeneuve has said he is very much intending to do a 3rd Dune movie, based on book #2. But that's it for him, at least. It'll be a few years as he needs a break for a while after doing the first 2 back to back, but he's already got a screenplay in progress for #3.

The SciFi Channel did 2 separate miniseries for the first 2 books in 2000 & 2002. Obviously they didn't have the budget or modern effects options that WB & Villeneuve could bring to bear but they were pretty well done, especially compared to what  other work SFC was doing at the time.

We do too - usually. But for movies the length of Lawrence of Arabia or longer, one needs to serve something more substantial. Especially if it's starting around lunch time!

He's waiting a few years to make Dune 3 not because he needs a break, but because there is a 12 year gap between the books story wise. He wants Timothée Chalamet to look older in Dune 3.

True, but it can be both, heh.

One other thing I said right after walking out, is that I liked the way they used Chani's character as a shifting POV on Paul and his journey. In the books it's not quite like that but Herbert expressed frustration later on that people didn't "get" that a lot of the thematic approach was actually anti hero/messiah figure. Chani gets to express that skepticism and fear of what it can lead to. They regularly showed her being expressive in how she looked at him - at first with distrust as an outsider, then growing acceptance and love, but "only as long as you stay yourself". After Paul essentially dies and is reborn by taking the water of life, that figuratively and literally broke her agreement in him taking on a power that he initially renounced.

3 hours plus an intermission / bathroom break - since it's on 2 discs. For a 3 part Dune marathon, I'll need even more food.

I always wished that they would bring the TV show 24 out but edited so it was one giant continuous episode of each season - like " real time " - just like Jack would have experienced.
