I normally review new theatrical movies, and especially the super-hero ones, the week they come out. But I will not be reviewing the new Aquaman movie, the last in their latest chain. Simply, I have not enjoyed the last decade of the DC Universe since the Man of Steel came out in. That was NOT my Superman, or Pa Kent either. Here Pa Kwent tells young Clark it would be better for a bus to go off a cliff and kill schoolchildren, then reveal his secret identity. Huh? And Clark lets his step- father die, knowing he could save him. This is not the “hero” I knew. And I can give a greater list of failures here. Batman Vs. Superman: I NEVER understood why Batman wanted to kill Superman, it was nuts. And what saves Superman was that his mother’s name was Martha! Ridiculous. And Jesse Eisenberg as Luthor was so miscast. As bad as it was the 4K extended version was a bit better. Wonder Woman: The Best of the bunch and I really liked it. The acting, the story and the cast was very good. Wonder Woman 1984 was a dud. Stupid plot stupid everything but they dd this to keep the original cast Justice League: Just bad. The 4 hour version was better, but still lacking and it was NOT concluded. Aquaman: I enjoyed this movie. BUT (and you may not know this). Aquaman was a copy of Marvel’s Sub-Mariner. And they took Subby’s origin and FIRST Silver Age story and made that the plot of Aquaman. Shazam: (Who I know as the original Captain Marvel). Meant for a younger audience this was not a bad movie. And a bit of fun. Shazam II: A waste of time. Bad Adam: was originally a villain in the Shazam Universe and should have stayed that way. Instead, he got his own movie, he should have fought Shazam in Shazam II. Blue Bolt: Not worth discussing. So there were two movies, or three if you count Shazam, out of ten, worth watching. And NONE of the sequels were good. For the money it costs to see the new Aquaman ($23 a ticket, if you are not an AMC Club member. I am so it half that price.) I’ll get a good dinner and stream it in a few months. Maybe.
Barry, someone posted on Twitter a picture of the prebooking for the film on opening night (tonight) at the 8:00 pm showing (Prime Time) and there were only 2 seats bought as of a few days ago. That's not a good sign. This will most likely go down as a huge box office bomb.
At my AMC theatre there are 100 seats sold for tonight. That combines the regular and 3D showings. The ratio is 3 to 1.
My brother saw it last night. He's not a picky or harsh movie critic type... and he gave it a thumbs down. Said it was like too many lately - just action scene to action scene with little to no character or plot development. Sad.
Lather, rinse, repeat. I hoping the writers/actors strike allowed good writers the time to come up with some new ideas because the Super Hero genre is going to be dead for a long while now. People are so over it (me included). It's one reason why I was so glad to see Oppenheimer do so well.
David, I really think you are right. I do remember when three hour epics, such as Ben Hur and Cleopatra came in went. There was a fair in the 60s for secret agent movies, and that stopped. I believe that the age of both Super-heroes and Disney remaking animated movies into live action is ending. And did you hear Warner Bros may be merging with Paramount.
