Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse (Blu-ray) review

Spider-man: Across the Spider-Verse (Blu-ray) review

Studio:  Sony
 Release Date: September 5, 2023
 Rating: PG-13
 Film: 4/5

 Plot
Miles Morales returns for the next chapter of the Oscar®-winning Spider-Verse saga (2018, Best Animated Feature Film, Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse), SPIDER-MAN™: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE. After reuniting with Gwen Stacy, Brooklyn’s full-time, friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is catapulted across the Multiverse, where he encounters a team of Spider-People charged with protecting its very existence. But when the heroes clash on how to handle a new threat, Miles finds himself pitted against the other Spiders, and must redefine what it means to be a hero so he can save the people he loves most.

 My Thoughts
I enjoyed the first film in the Spider-Verse and looked forward to watching this one. Like the first, I’m not a huge fan of the animation, but I can see why people like it (especially youngsters with attention spans of a gnat). The story is very in-depth and much deeper than most comic book films. I like how the story concentrates on more than just the main character and Gwen Stacy receives a lot of screen time as well, but it never feels like the screenwriter is trying to throw too much at you. The multiverse can be a tad confusing for the uninitiated, but after so many movies that delve into it over the past few years, it’s old hat for most of us by now.

Like the first film, the video presentation doesn’t disappoint and will showcase your display’s ability to hit virtually every color in the color spectrum. At times the animation can look 3D given its depth and detail and there are a lot of textures in the image that gives the image an art-like look. Sadly, the Blu-ray doesn’t come with an Atmos mix (that’s reserved for the 4K disc, which Sony didn’t provide for review). Fortunately, my processor upmixes the track to Neural:X and the overhead speakers get quite a workout. This is an active mix from beginning to end and it won’t disappoint the fans.

 Video 5/5
 Audio 4.5/5 (DTS-HD MA 5.1)

 Conclusion
While I’m not a big fan of the animation, I have to say that it’s a well-written film and even though the runtime exceeds two hours, it never drags and kept us interested until the end. The video presentation is about as good as it gets and I’m probably going to shell out my own cash for the 4K disc once it goes on sale because I want the very best in my theater. If you aren’t 4K capable, you won’t be disappointed one bit and the film features one of the best looking discs to keep in your collection. Highly recommended.

Loved this in the theater, one of the few really good Marvel movies since Avengers End Game. Definitely want to see it again at home.

This one looked phenomenal in HDR, as you said - the colors were incredible at times! And the sound was pretty impressive as well!

Will need to rewatch soon!

The PR agency said that the studio didn't provide them enough copies for the demand. It's happening more and more with "A list" titles. At least they are sending something out, unlike Disney/Fox, who only send out Digital Copies.

I have the 4k disc. I’ll watch tonight and report!
I downloaded the 4K today on the K-scape (thank you disc-to-digital...it only cost $4.92) and will do a comparison sometime this week.
